In the Bible there are two sorts of aloe mentioned, and both were good sources of moisturizer.
The first was the true aloe, which is a member of the lily family. The plant had long spikes which were filled with a fresh-smelling green goo. This was used to treat dry skin and sunburn, as it is today.
The second sort of aloe referred to wasn't an aloe at all, but a large tree. Resin was extracted from its wood, and this aromatic substance was used to make perfume (Ps.45:8; Prov.7:17) It was mingled with fragrant spices, as in Song of Solomon 4:14 "Fragrant henna with spikenard, spikenard and saffron, calamus and cinnamon, with all trees of frankincense, myrrh and aloes."
Aloes were also among the spices and oils used in embalming the dead. Nicodemus bought a hundred pounds of aloe and spices along with the linen strips to wrap Jesus' body (John 19:39)
