I am an adventist, been my entire 37 yrs..... i have an older friend, also adventist who strongly believes that the one cup of coffee she drank as a girl has caused all of her children to leave the church........... dilema........ i think it might have been the 5 or 6 different husbands?.... This only comes up , because my husband, not an adventist does drink coffee... i myself do not, only cuz i don't like the taste... We all know that E.White talks about stuff like that..... i don't read her stuff religiously, only because i believe it should be used as a guide, not to spouted and quoted....etc.... so, how bout it?

MaireBren,
Your friend definitely has a problem, but it isn't coffee! You can tell her, if you want, that my mother-in-law has always been a coffee drinker, still is, and she now has some serious health problems that probably weren't helped much by it, but all but one of her kids have been church members since their youth, and have never strayed in the least. And the one that did leave the church, his problem was mostly with the people, such as the abusive youth Sabbath School teacher who once grabbed him by the front of his shirt and shook him, and tore his shirt.
But I doubt that your friend will pay much attention to this. It sounds like she is looking for a convenient excuse so she doesn't have to own up to her real problems. What she really needs is to get herself right with God and establish a real relationship with Him. Then she will be able to live a life that will make Christianity appealing to her kids. Mormons also dont believe in drinking coffee. I knew a Mormon guy who used to drink Cokes. I asked him how he could do that. He said there is nothing against Cokes. I dont drink either one. And since I am caffein free - I can use it as a drug. It does have beneficial uses as a drug. But when its taken all the time - its drug use is nil. --Ðøug ™ [ March 16, 2002, 07:32 AM: Message edited by: Doug Meis ]

My maternal grandmother was one of the most beautiful people I have ever known. She was widowed and raised 5 children on her own. She was a tea drinker right throughout her life and I don't believe that will exclude her from heaven. I am a tea drinker too but it is part of my lifestyle that helps to keep me on an even keel.
One of my daughters and a young friend were discussing young folks from the rural church we used to attend and the fact that most of those young adults no longer attend the SDA church. We were wondering what made the difference and decided that the ones that stayed in contact with the church were the ones where open discussion of the churches leaders and beliefs was allowed in the home.
I know the best message given to me by my parents and grandmother was to always look to Jesus because the people would always let me down.
