This is the distance beyond which it was considered unlawful to travel (for the Jews) on the Sabbath. Its limitation is supposed to have originated in Ex.16:29, where every man is commanded to abide in his place on the Sabbath day. The distance of a Sabbath day's journey was 2000 cubits. This is said to be the distance between the Israelites and the Ark of the Covenant when they crossed the Jordan river.
