I haven't read her quotes on this subject in a while, but I beleive the only reason she "counseled against it" is that children born from such a marriage went through terrible prejudice against them from both white and black. Also the truth is that there are cultural problems that arise in marriages between people of different cultures. (I know something about this personally as I'm white and am married to a Mexican Yaqi.) But Mrs. White never said it is a sin to marry outside of one's race. And of course there are fewer problems today from prejudice although they certainly do still exist. A close friend of mine in the military was half black and half white, and I remember him crying sometimes because of the prejudice he felt from both blacks and whites. He confided in me that he would not wish his experience on his worst enemies.

A stable interracial marriage is better than having biracial babies out of wedlock, which I've seen quite often. I don't know what the percentages are, and I don't really care. I'll leave that to the census. Still, it happens, and seemingly more often than it used to. I'm speaking of people I see everyday who are probably not in the church.

That is comparing biracial babies that have two parents (of two different races) married together in a stable marriage - compared to a biracial baby that was born to an unwed mother who never married the father. As a rule, I would say most any child is better off if their parents are married in a stable marriage then if they never married to begin with or got divorced. A little boy coming home from school after being made fun of that has a loving father to hold and talk to him will obviously deal with the situation better than if he has a fatherless home.

I don't like that term 'race' either. One could say 'ethnic background' however a white English guy and a white Greek girl have different ethnic backgrounds. So that isn't exactly the right terminology either.

whatever we think about it, it seems like its very popular. Inter-cultural marriages are flourishing!
