SEC SESSION ELECTS NEW PRESIDENT
On Friday afternoon, 7 September the South England Conference in Session at Exeter University voted Pastor Sam Davis as the New President of the South England Conference. Pastor Davis is currently serving as pastor of the Holloway and Muswell Hill Seventh-day Adventist churches and has previous broad experience of ministry having served as Youth and Community Services director in South England. More recently he served as a church pastor in Johannesburg, South Africa. Pastor Davis is a man of vision. Last month he was in Kenya as part of a British Union Conference Youth Mission project. The delegates at the session expressed their support for Pastor Davis with a spontaneous round of applause. In accepting the position Pastor Davis expressed appreciation to the outgoing president, Pastor Humphrey Walters. "Pastor Walters and I go back a long way. We were at school together and it was pastor Walters who encouraged me to enter ministry."
At the same time Pastor Paul Lockham was returned as Executive Secretary and Earl Ramharacksingh as Treasurer. Pastor Lockham has served faithfully as Executive Secretary in the SEC since October last year. Before then he fulfilled the same position in the North England Conference. Earl Ramharacksingh has now served in the SEC treasury department for 14 years and has been Treasurer for the last eight years.
This has been an upbeat session. World church vice-president, Pastor Pardon Mwansa has shared the vision of Acts chapters 3 and 4 challenging delegates to ask the question, "What do I have to offer?" The session also voted 17 new churches into the fellowship of churches in Southern England and recognised a net membership increase of 24.6% over the past for years leading to a total of 18,075 as of December 2006.
As this report goes to press the nominating and other committees are meeting, reports are being presented and there is active discussion from the delegates on the floor. The plans committee is meeting basing their discussion on the SEC strategic plan for the last four years plus recommendations put forward by 16 breakout groups on the Thursday evening. A fuller report will be sent out early next week and a complete report will appear in the Messenger.

NEW CHURCH FOR IRELAND [Oliver Martyn]
Adventists in Ireland now have a new church. Situated just off Society Street in Ballinasloe's city centre the bilingual church family worships in English and Portuguese and have worked hard to make their vision come true. Ballinasloe is a town situated mid-way between the city of Galway on the west and Dublin on the east coast.
Adventists in the area worked very hard to renovate the building and prepare it for the inauguration on Sabbath, 1 September. Pastor David Neal, the President of the Irish Mission along with district pastor Stephen Wilson and Tony O'Rourke, the head elder of the Galway church, welcomed all those who had come for the inauguration service. The day was especially memorable for the beautiful singing of gospel songs in Portuguese by a Brazilian choir. Members also sang duets and solos during the service. Most of the people who had attended the house church in Ballinasloe up to now come from Brazil, so it was very appropriate that the service should be conducted in both English and Portuguese with translation by 15-year-old Andrew Santos Da Silva and his sister Franciara. There was room for Irish as well, with Betty O'Rourke, wife of Tony, speaking some words in Irish.
Pastor Stephen Wilson relayed greetings from around the world including messages from the President of the Brazilian Union and from Ashley Kongari, former pastor of the western district now serving in India.
As the members of the new church signed their names to a scroll each new member took a flower and planted it in a flower box. Francisco Santos Da Silva spoke of his happiness that this day had come sharing with those present, "You are here because God loves you." In a practical expression of support the friends of the Ballinasloe church then added their names to a scroll, expressing their wish to help the church through their prayers and practical support.
DR ROY ADAMS PUSHES THE GOSPEL AT PRESS OPEN DAY
"Before saying 'Amen', think first," Roy Adams, Associate Editor of the Adventist Review, told an attentive audience in the Press Open Day marquee. "Too often," he said, "we listen to a preacher without processing what he is saying and checking that he is correct." In an entertaining but thought-provoking message on "Interpreting the Times," Dr Adams stated that when writing or speaking in public you need to "put things carefully," because "you are speaking for the Lord." Focusing his attention on the first 14 verses of Matthew 24 he pointed out that for over a thousand years there have been reports of earthquakes, wars, famines and pestilences – and while these may indicate something of history the real clue to the return of Christ is the message of verse 14, "This Gospel of the Kingdom must be preached to all the world." Personalising the message he pointed out that all the other signs of Christ's return in Matthew 24 are passive, that we are just observers. However, the sign of verse 14 is active. God has chosen to use us. Dr Adams stated that some preachers like to emphasise the persecution and the hate referred to in these verses "but don't give a hoot for those not yet saved". Adams then challenged, "God gives a hoot for the millions of India and China that don't have the gospel." He equally cares for our neighbour – and that is where we can make a difference.
Adams was at the Stanborough Press Open Day to promote his new book, "From the Heart" looking back through some of his Review editorials at issues facing the church and society. Many coaches and cars parked on the grass outside emphasised the continuing popularity of this event with a busy exhibition area selling the latest Adventist books and music along with an array of healthy foods. The day is an excellent opportunity for networking with many friends catching up with each other and new friendships being made.
The day climaxed with music from Oasys and Jennifer Phillips followed by an entertaining and informative interview with Roy Adams by Hope Channel's "In Conversation" host, Victor Hulbert. The 28-minute interview aimed to get 'under the skin' of Dr Adams discovering where his inspiration came from and why his life turned from one of scathing contempt for Adventists to a growing respect and deep love for the Church. This recording is now available on the web at <www.adventist.org.uk>. With book signings, a strong message, music, bouncy castles, good food, inspiration and friendships renewed, the coaches and cars returned home full of satisfied customers.
A selection of photos of Press Open Day are available on the BUC picture gallery: <www.adventistpictures.org.uk>.
"IN CONVERSATION" WEB SPECIAL
Following positive feedback and interest from those attending Press Open Day, an "In Conversation" special featuring Dr Roy Adams, Associate Editor of the Adventist Review and Adventist World is available for live stream or download from the website, <www.adventist.org.uk>. The 28-minute programme balances insights into his job as Associate Editor with the story of a young man with an analytical mind growing up in the West Indies, travelling the world, and developing the skills and insights for his current work.

SPECIAL BAPTISM FOR NORTH-EAST DAY OF FELLOWSHIP [Peter Jeynes]
Sabbath, 1 September saw what may have been the largest ever gathering of Seventh-day Adventists in the north-east of England. Upwards of 300 people gathered in Middlesbrough where the annual Day of Fellowship coincided with a baptism in the Seventh-day Adventists regular but temporary church home – a large Anglican church.
While British Union Conference President, Pastor Don McFarlane was guest speaker for the day, what made the day particularly special for him was the opportunity to participate in the baptism of his daughter-in-law, Monique McFarlane. It was a touching moment for Pastor McFarlane and his whole family, but what impressed him more were the local candidates such as Michael Watson from Horden, Lupi Mwanjoka from Darlington and Eric Hamilton-Johansson and Ruth Mhlanga from Middlesbrough. "To see local people giving their lives to Jesus is fantastic," Pastor McFarlane stated. "For one it took ten years for him to make his decision but I know that decision will last into eternity."
St Barnabas is an Anglican church. The Vicar, Erik Wilson, encourages a strongly Biblical approach to Christian life so for Erik and his membership a baptism by immersion is by no means a strange event. Thus to prominently install a borrowed birthing pool on the steps of the nave caused no problems or strange looks – simply an understanding that "this is a good thing".
All the candidates affirmed their approval of the baptismal vows but then went further and presented their own testimonies of the working of God in their lives. Lupi, a teenager who made his decision at the Southport Camp Meeting and Michael Watson gave their testimonies using short videos. Michael's video can be seen on YouTube and gives a little flavour of the warm, friendly spirit of the day. Visit: <uk.youtube.com/watch?v=vm7rxWYY4-g>.
One visitor gave a very positive view of the event, "northerners are such friendly people" while passers-by remarked on the beaming smiles and asked, "what is going on here?"
God really is at work in the north-east. There are growing and happy churches who face the future with hope. A selection of photos from the day are available on the BUC picture gallery: <www.adventistpictures.org.uk>.

"WALK WITH JESUS" IN THE NEW FOREST [Nathan Stickland, SEC Associate Youth Director (Pathfinders)]
"How fortunate to have so many children within the church!" Not words you expect to hear from a council officer, but Bill Dow, Chair of the Council for the New Forest was so impressed with the children at the South England Conference Adventurer and Pathfinder Camporees that he wrote to express his personal thanks for the invitation to attend. The two events catered for children from six to sixteen providing a thrilling climax to a year of activities and learning in their home clubs.
Pastor Barry Black was also impressed. As Youth director for North America, this was his first time at an Adventurer Camporee. He is taking the idea back to the United States with the idea of introducing it "back home".
Due to diary challenges this year's SEC Adventurer and Pathfinder Camporees were held back to back. A change and challenge clubs and SEC staff rose to with great fortitude. Starting on Friday, 17 August through to Monday, 20 August the Adventurers learnt to "Walk Like Jesus" with the very participatory presentations by Pastor Black. Sabbath activities included award-based tasks such as Ladybugs, Outdoor Explorer, Habitats, Hygiene, and Butterflies.
The Sunday activities followed in the same vein with Cycling, Astronomy, Build and Fly, Camper, and fun on two bouncy castles. While the weather provided "liquid sunshine" at times we were blessed on the Monday morning to have good enough conditions for a visit from the Raptors Falconry Centre. With birds of prey on display, and on the wing, the highlight was the falcon swooping within inches of people's heads trying to catch its lure.
Monday was also the changeover day, with some clubs leaving while other clubs arrived. Both the closing ceremony for Adventurers, and the opening ceremony for Pathfinders saw Councillor Bill Dow and his wife in attendance. They enjoyed their time so much that they expressed the desire to attend another of our camps if we were ever in the New Forest again.
Pastor Mike Stevenson, Ohio Conference Youth director, shared his ideas on "Walk With Jesus" with the Pathfinders. Unique and powerful would describe his messages. The worship times began and ended days that were filled with honour-based activities like Model Rocketry, Cycling, Astronomy, Red Alert, Digestion and Nutrition, Weather, Archery, Geocaching, wall climbing on the portable wall, and a display from the Raptors and with the weather clearing over the week a great time was had by all.
With a number of old time clubs not able to attend due to staffing, we still had a swell of numbers with the arrival of a number of our newly established clubs. We are also grateful to a number of new volunteers who helped support the SEC staff. Thank you to all the clubs and staff for their help in making this another memorable event of fun activities and muddy footwear, all being graced by the presence of God and the message that He is to return soon. In the meantime we will all be "Walking with Jesus".
Some pictures from the Camporees are available to view in Nathan Stickland's Pathfinder gallery: http://web.mac.com/nstickland/iWeb/NSPathfinders/SEC%20Adventurer%20Camporee%20Pics%2007.html.
Pathfinder and Adventurer programmes develop the physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual dimensions of children and youth between the ages of 6 and 16 with a programme similar to that of the Scouts. There are over 2.75 million Pathfinders world-wide.

PILGRIMS – GROW IN CHRIST AT EURO GHANAIAN CAMP MEETING [Nana Sifa Twum/Isaac Amo-Kyereme]
The President of the World Seventh-day Adventist Church, Pastor Jan Paulsen has urged Ghanaians all over the world to put their trust in God as Ghanaians continue to build their nation.
Pastor Paulsen was addressing the 13th Annual Euro Ghanaian Seventh-day Adventist Camp Meeting in de Bron, the Netherlands. The annual Camp Meeting is used by the members to evaluate their activities over the year, and adopt new strategies to ensure spiritual and socio-economic development of individual members and the church as a whole and is attended by large numbers of Ghanaians resident in the UK.
Church members are renowned for their fund-raising. At this Camp Meeting members agreed to support the building of new staff quarters at the Adventist Church's Valley View University in Accra, Ghana. To date, Ghanaian Seventh-day Adventists residing in Europe have raised over £75,000 to build four such facilities helping to ease accommodation challenges facing the nation's premier private university.
Meeting under the theme, "Pilgrims – Grow In Christ" members came from the UK, Austria, Germany, Spain, France, Switzerland and Belgium. Pastor Paulsen, who worked in Ghana 45 years ago as a Bible Teacher at the Adventist Training College at Bekwai, recounted very fond memories of life in Ghana and said God purposely sent the Paulsen family to Ghana so they could experience the generous Ghanaian hospitality and also learn to have hope like them. "Ghanaians like all people of God are a people of hope and of vision," he said. "True Christians should accept the fact that they are all pilgrims on this earth. And because a pilgrim knows he does not belong to this world, their vision and hope should be focused on the coming of the Lord… It is this hope that has brought you all from all parts of Europe to rekindle your faith in the Lord."
The host pastor of the Ghanaian Adventist community church in the Netherlands, Pastor Andrews Laurence Ewoo, in a welcoming message reminded Christians and Seventh-day Adventists in particular to grow in Christ as they journey towards heaven stating that, "The serious pilgrim looks intently at the cross so he will not lose focus."

38 HAPPY PASTORS
Life will now be easier for 38 pastors in Pakistan as funds have been raised to provide them with motor-bikes. From a UK perspective this may seem very basic, but many pastors in Pakistan cover large areas on foot or on bicycle. The funds have been provided from churches and conferences across northern Europe with a substantial portion of the £12,320 raised coming from the UK.
Pastor Don McFarlane, President of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the UK and Ireland pioneered the initiative after visiting Pakistan last year. He states that when he "learned about the large areas that pastors there had to cover on foot or on bicycles, I came away determined that something needed to be done to make travelling less of a burden for them." At the time he was part of the leadership team for the Trans-European Division, but since accepting the call to serve as BUC President he is delighted to see that the generosity of individuals and churches has now made this a reality. "The 38 new bikes should raise the morale of pastors in Pakistan and result in the expansion of our church there," he excitedly told BUC News. "This is a mission driven project as pastors will now find it easier to move from one place to another, visit members and work with prospective members."

NINE GLORIOUS DAYS
"Discover Ireland", the brochures say. Pastor Des Rafferty took them at their word. The last week of August saw Pastor Rafferty, Principal of the Adventist Discovery Centre taking a nine day tour of the Emerald Isle, not as holiday, but to meet the Adventist members and gain an insight into how the ADC can impact the 6 million people who live in the North and the Republic of Ireland.
Travelling from Belfast, in a rather circuitous route, encompassing Longford, Galway, Newmarket on Fergus and finally Dublin he shared prayer meetings and Sabbath services with the members at the various locations. Meeting the leadership and members of the churches in the Irish Mission allowed him to listen and to share with them ways to be partners in the work of the ADC. On his return from the nine day jaunt Pastor Rafferty told BUC News that "it was a truly unique experience to worship and fellowship with the church family on the Emerald Isle." He continued, "I have seen a tremendous need and heard the impassioned 'Macedonian like' pleas for help. We will find a way to help our brothers and sisters in Ireland to reach the millions who don't yet know Jesus as their Saviour."
Discussions will continue with a view to establishing an Irish Bible Correspondence School. Please pray for the work and the growing band of members. May they continue to be precious jewels for God.
