Memory Text: Isaiah 54:5 NIV “For your Maker is your husband— the LORD Almighty is his name— the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth.”
Sunday – The Beginning of the Relationship Jeremiah 2:2-3 NIV “2 "Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem: "’I remember the devotion of your youth, how as a bride you loved me and followed me through the desert, through a land not sown. 3 Israel was holy to the LORD, the firstfruits of his harvest; all who devoured her were held guilty, and disaster overtook them,’" declares the LORD.” Jeremiah 2:2 COMMENTARY BY ADAM CLARKE The youth here refers to their infant political state when they came out of Egypt..Their espousals refer to their receiving the law at Mount Sinai, which they solemnly accepted.. When they received the law, and an establishment in the Promised Land, then they became a people and a nation. This is what Joshua understood God would do for Israel: Joshua 24:3-13 NRSV “3 Then I took your father Abraham from beyond the River and led him through all the land of Canaan and made his offspring many. I gave him Isaac; 4 and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. I gave Esau the hill country of Seir to possess, but Jacob and his children went down to Egypt. 5 Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt with what I did in its midst; and afterwards I brought you out. 6 When I brought your ancestors out of Egypt, you came to the sea; and the Egyptians pursued your ancestors with chariots and horsemen to the Red Sea. 7 When they cried out to the LORD, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and made the sea come upon them and cover them; and your eyes saw what I did to Egypt. Afterwards you lived in the wilderness a long time. 8 Then I brought you to the land of the Amorites, who lived on the other side of the Jordan; they fought with you, and I handed them over to you, and you took possession of their land, and I destroyed them before you. 9 Then King Balak son of Zippor of Moab, set out to fight against Israel. He sent and invited Balaam son of Beor to curse you, 10 but I would not listen to Balaam; therefore he blessed you; so I rescued you out of his hand. 11 When you went over the Jordan and came to Jericho, the citizens of Jericho fought against you, and also the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; and I handed them over to you. 12 I sent the hornet ahead of you, which drove out before you the two kings of the Amorites; it was not by your sword or by your bow. 13 I gave you a land on which you had not labored, and towns that you had not built, and you live in them; you eat the fruit of vineyards and oliveyards that you did not plant.” These are the things Israel needed to do in return: Joshua 24:14-18 NRSV “14 "Now therefore revere the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness; put away the gods that your ancestors served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. 15 ¶ Now if you are unwilling to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD." 16 Then the people answered, "Far be it from us that we should forsake the LORD to serve other gods; 17 for it is the LORD our God who brought us and our ancestors up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight. He protected us along all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed; 18 and the LORD drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the LORD, for he is our God."”
Monday – Unfaithfulness of the Bride Jeremiah 5:7 NRSV “How can I pardon you? Your children have forsaken me, and have sworn by those who are no gods. When I fed them to the full, they committed adultery and trooped to the houses of prostitutes.” Ezekiel 16:26-29, 34 God’s Word to the Nations “26 You had sex with your lustful neighbors, the Egyptians. You used your prostitution to make me angry. 27 "’So I used my power against you. I took away some of your land, and I handed you over to your greedy enemies, the Philistines, who were ashamed of what you had done. 28 "’You had sex with the Assyrians because you weren’t satisfied. You still weren’t satisfied. 29 So you increased your acts of prostitution to include the land of the merchants, the Babylonians. Even after that, you weren’t satisfied. 34 You are a different kind of prostitute. No one goes after you for favors. You are the opposite. You pay them, and you don’t accept payment.” Hosea 9:1 Holman “Israel, do not rejoice jubilantly as the nations do, for you have acted promiscuously, leaving your God. You have loved the wages of a prostitute on every grain-threshing floor.”
Tuesday – Reaping the Fruits of Unfaithfulness Jeremiah 5:19 BBE “And it will come about, when you say, Why has the Lord our God done all these things to us? that you will say to them, As you gave me up, making yourselves servants to strange gods in your land, so will you be servants to strange men in a land which is not yours.” Jeremiah 5:19 SDA BIBLE COMMENTARY “In case the Jews should be insolent enough to ask the reasons for the calamities, the prophet was to reply with a countercharge: Judah had forsaken the Lord and had turned to idolatry. God’s promises had been given on condition of obedience and loyalty. The punishment was adapted to meet the nature of the offense. God had given them His land, but since they preferred to serve foreign deities, they would be carried away to serve foreigners in a foreign land.” Galatians 6:7 BBE “Be not tricked; God is not made sport of: for whatever seed a man puts in, that will he get back as grain.” Galatians 6:7 COMMENTARY BY ALBERT BARNES In the connexion in which it stands, it seems to refer to the support of the ministers of the gospel; and Paul introduces the general principle, that as a man sows he will reap, to show them what will be the effect of a liberal and proper use of their property. If they made a proper use of it; if. they employed it for benevolent purposes; if they appropriated what they should to the support of religion, they would reap accordingly. God could not be imposed on in regard to this. They could not make him think that they had true religion when they were sowing to the flesh, and when they were spending their money in purchasing pleasure, and in luxury and vanity. Jeremiah 5:22 ESV “Do you not fear me? declares the LORD; Do you not tremble before me? I placed the sand as the boundary for the sea, a perpetual barrier that it cannot pass; though the waves toss, they cannot prevail; though they roar, they cannot pass over it.”
Wednesday – Restoration Jeremiah 33:11 KJ21 “the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the voice of them that shall say, "Praise the LORD of hosts, for the LORD is good; for His mercy endureth for ever" —and of those who shall bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the LORD. For I will cause to return the captives of the land, as at the first,’ saith the LORD.” Jeremiah 33:11 COMMENTARY BY ADAM CLARKE The voice of them that shall say, Praise the Lord of hosts] That is, the voice of the Levites in the sacred service: intimating that the temple should be rebuilt, and the public service restored. John 20:21 KJ21 “Then said Jesus to them again, "Peace be unto you. As My Father hath sent Me, even so send I you."” Philippians 4:4 NLT “Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice!” 1 Thessalonians 1:6 NKJV “And you became followers of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit,” 1 John 2:12 NKJV “I write to you, little children, Because your sins are forgiven you for His name’s sake.” Promises God makes to His unfaithful bride: Jeremiah 25:11 MKJV “And this whole land shall be a ruin [and] a waste. And these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.” Jeremiah 25:11 COMMENTARY BY JAMIESON, FAUSSET, AND BROWN The exact number of years of Sabbaths in four hundred ninety years, the period from Saul to the Babylonian captivity; righteous retribution for their violation of the Sabbath. Jeremiah 29:10 MKJV “For so says the LORD, When according to My word seventy years have been fulfilled for Babylon, I will visit you and confirm My good word to you, to bring you back to this place.” Ezekiel 16:60 MKJV “But I will remember My covenant with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish to you an everlasting covenant.”
Thursday – New Covenant Promises Jeremiah 31:31-37 God’s Word to the Nations “31 "The days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I will make a new promise to Israel and Judah. 32 It will not be like the promise that I made to their ancestors when I took them by the hand and brought them out of Egypt. They rejected that promise, although I was a husband to them," declares the LORD. 33 "But this is the promise that I will make to Israel after those days," declares the LORD: "I will put my teachings inside them, and I will write those teachings on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34 No longer will each person teach his neighbors or his relatives by saying, ‘Know the LORD.’ All of them, from the least important to the most important, will know me," declares the LORD, "because I will forgive their wickedness and I will no longer hold their sins against them." 35 ¶ The LORD provides the sun to be a light during the day. He orders the moon and stars to be lights during the night. He stirs up the sea so that its waves roar. His name is the LORD of Armies. This is what the LORD says: 36 Only if these laws stop working, declares the LORD, will Israel’s descendants stop being a nation in my presence. 37 This is what the LORD says: Only if the heavens could be measured or the foundations of the earth could be searched, would I ever reject all of Israel’s descendants because of everything that they have done, declares the LORD.” Galatians 3:29 Holman “And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, heirs according to the promise.”
Friday – Further Study SDA Bible Commentary, Vol. 4, p. 25 “Seventh-day Adventists believe that, generally speaking, the promises and predictions given through the Old Testament prophets originally applied to literal Israel and were to have been fulfilled to them on the condition that they obey God and remain loyal to Him. But the Scriptures record the fact that they disobeyed God and proved disloyal to Him instead. Accordingly, what He purposed to do for the world through Israel of old He will finally accomplish through His church on earth today, and many of the promises originally made to literal Israel will be fulfilled to His remnant people at the close of time.” SDA Bible Commentary, Vol. 4, pp. 28-29 “The material advantages that Israel enjoyed were designed to arrest the attention and catch the interest of the heathen, for whom the less obvious spiritual advantages had no natural attraction....Ambassadors from one foreign country after another would come to discover, if they might, the great secret of Israel’s success as a nation, and its leaders would have the opportunity of directing the minds of their visitors to the Source of all good things...Nation after nation would “come over” (Isa. 45:14), that is, “be joined with” and “cleave to the house of Jacob” (ch. 14:1)....As the numbers of Israel increased, they were to enlarge their borders, until their kingdom should embrace the world” (COL 290; cf. Dan. 2:35). It was God’s design that the whole earth be prepared for the first advent of Christ, even as to-day the way is preparing for His second coming” (PK 703, 704).
