Feed the Hungry…The Real Spirit of Christmas
Watch Christmas Mutirão, Live on Hope Channel December 15, 2007
Christmas Mutirão – Sharing Hope, will broadcast on Hope Channel on Dec. 15, 2007, from the Botafogo Adventist Church, Brazil. Jan Paulsen, president of the Seventh-day Adventist worldwide church will present the message.
The program will also feature teams in local churches competing in writing and performing a brief Christmas pageant, choosing a service project in the local community, and collecting food for the local Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) food banks. Judging the competition will be local VIPs from the surrounding area. “All those who can collaborate and want to help, please do, because Christmas Mutirão is an extraordinary effort,” says Edson Arantes do Nascimento, Brazilian soccer legend known as Pelé.
This 14-year-old project focuses on feeding the hungry and has averaged a yearly food donation of 90 tons. In 2006, the production involved 120 thousand volunteers in 16 Brazilian states and 3.7 million people benefited from the food distribution. This year’s goal is to collect 2,500 tons of food which equals about 5,500,000 pounds.
This inspirational concept was developed over dinner in 1994 by Sérgio and Marli Azevedo. To the Azevedos’ the greatest reward is “seeing the smiles of the families and children.”
