INNOVATIVE EVANGELISM RECEIVES FUNDS...[Bertil Wiklander/TED News

St Albans, England - Every year the Adventist world church
headquarters, through the "The Council on Evangelism and Witness"
committee, gives funds for innovative projects in outreach that can
provide models for other areas across the world. Last year, in the
territory covered by the Trans-European Division (TED), Finland was
the only recipient of a grant.
This year a total of $53,000 has been granted for three exciting
projects:
In the Adriatic, $20,000 has been granted for teaching and training
local pastors and members concepts of church growth to understand and
reach people with post modern values. In Zagreb, Value Mediation
Agency has been in the experimental stage, and shown significant
results, and this grant will help extend this in other areas.
Hungary received $20,000 to support their involvement at the annual
Sziget Music Festival, an event which totals up to 60,000 young
people in attendance. This is a great opportunity for young people to
witness to their peers. The Sziget Music Festival is the largest
annual weeklong multicultural festival in Europe. For 11 years the
Seventh-day Adventist Church has organised a drop-in centre at the
Festival, with more than 500 young people visiting in a week for
spiritual advice and counselling. Peter Horvath, the Youth Director
in Hungary says that this grant will help both extend this project to
another large cultural event, "The Valley of Arts"; and enable
concerts and follow up programmes to be run.
A third grant of $13,000 has been given to the Netherlands for Faith
Challenge weekends, taking place three times a year, and aimed at 16
- 30 year olds. "Participants learn about their faith, church,
worship etc, and put it into practice, including weekend outreach",
explained Gerard Frenk, Executive Secretary of the Adventist Church
in the Netherlands.
During and after these projects, each will be asked to send a report,
so that other areas can learn and benefit from these initiatives. TED
President, Bertil Wiklander said, "We congratulate these unions and
pray that God will give them wisdom and energy for a successful
completion of these projects."
CENTRED IN JESUS...[BUC News/TED News Staff/TED News]
Slovenia/England - LIFEdevelopment training and equipping session
have been held in Slovenia and in the UK recently. Dr Miroslav Pujic
(Director of Centre for Secular and Postmodern Ministries at the
Trans-European Division and the world church) and Pastor Eglan Brooks
(responsible for LIFEdevelopment in the United Kingdom) respectively
led out in these programmes.
LIFEdevelopment is based around the principle of Jesus that He,
"mingled with men as one who desired their good. He showed His
sympathy for them, ministered to their needs, and won their
confidence. Then He bade them, 'Follow Me'. "The concept is very
simple. Pastor Mike Simpson from Manchester said, "It seems like it
is a task to reach people, but people are looking for friends. That's
what Jesus did. Jesus was just remarkable. We just want to make
friends."
There are currently 47 separate projects in the world following Life
Development discipleship concept, which is based on Biblical
Principles of building authentic friendships with unchurched
individuals and leading them to Jesus Christ through the discipleship
process and nurturing them on life's journey. Dr Pujic says that his
goal for this year is to have 100 projects working by the end of this
year; of which 35 will be in the TED territory.
British Union Conference President, Pastor Don McFarlane, endorses
this concept. He would like to see LIFEdevelopment permeate the
entire church in the British Union. "When members realise that
LIFEdevelopment is no more than seeing every person as a candidate
for heaven and taking the time to nurture that person for the
Kingdom, I believe there will be an explosion of support for this
evangelistic process."
Pastor Brooks is amazed at the tremendous prospect LIFEdevelopment
offers for the future of the Church. "Can you imagine thousands of
Seventh-day Adventists connecting, reaching new people who have never
known the Lord, touching families and friends with deep, meaningful
and caring relation-ships?" he asks, encouraging each member to catch
the vision. "However," he notes, "this vision, this programme of
LIFEdevelopment and any future plans to engage our members in
evangelism is useless unless each one of us as Adventists first make
Jesus the centre of our lives."

IMPACT TAIWAN - A WORLD YOUTH EVENT...[Link2Uth/TED News Staff/TED
News]
Taipei, Taiwan - Youth and church leaders from all over the world met
in Taiwan for 'IMPACT Taiwan' - the second world conference on Youth
and Community Services (WCYCS), organized by the Seventh-day
Adventist Church, spanning the Christmas and New Year period, 2007/8.
Having raised funds prior to the event, organized teams of young
people from around the world participated in community service
projects in Taiwan, offering their time, skills and efforts in
running health expos, carrying out construction work, classroom
improvements, sports training, evangelistic meetings and more.
"Everywhere we turned, we saw them working on community and village
projects. Hundreds of Seventh-day Adventist young people swarmed the
city and the country side in an effort to serve the needs of Taiwan.
I fully believe that because of their work, the city of Taipei will
never be exactly the same again", said Dr Leslie Pollard, of Loma
Linda University.
Towards the second week, more young people surged into Taipei, to
join the Youth Conference held on 1-5 January; to enjoy the
fellowship in worshipping God together; to celebrate the 100 Years
Anniversary of the Adventist Youth Ministry, and to share experiences
gained through the community service projects.
Two participants from the British Union Conference, Alycia Hanson and
Clarissa Lewis, volunteers teaching English and Health, said: "We
felt quite privileged to be part of the WCYCS 2008, and were truly
blessed throughout the conference; which motto was 'Love, Care and
Serve'. We learnt many things from the seminars, and also culturally
in fellowship with hundreds of other young people from all around the
world, being able to worship and lift up God's name and, even with
language barriers, we still felt as though we were in one accord. We
truly Impacted Taiwan...and [we] plan to make another visit!"
Trans-European Youth Director Paul Tompkins commented: "The second
WCYCS was an excellent event...At the convention 100 Years of
Adventist Youth Ministry was celebrated and as part of the programme
each division received two awards for youth/leaders who had given
outstanding service. The TED nominations were for Kaare Lund (Norway)
and Yvonne Bauwens (Scotland). In the case of Kaare Lund the award
was presented posthumously following his tragic death on ADRA duty in
2003 and in recognition of his outstanding contribution to both Youth
and Pathfinder work in the division. Both awards will be presented
locally at an appropriate time early in 2008."
"Overwhelmed by the response of church and community members to their
voluntary community initiative, the youth have returned to their
local fields to become catalysts for community impact programmes.
This was indeed a programme that made us proud to be Seventh-day
Adventists and anxious to upgrade the youth Ministries brand of the
twenty first century", concluded Balvin Braham, Youth Director in the
Inter-American Division.
