I've been asked to start up a thread here of Redwood Snippets I plan to submit a variety of types of snippets. You can feel free to join in. To start with I thought it would be fun to reminise with some old songs. The real religious classics from the olden days. WELL that is what I accused my Dad of living in. This was one of my Dad's favorites. Does anyone recall the person who was famous for singing this old song. I hope you can recognize it from this snippet .... What is the name of this old song? " My God and I go in the field together ... we walk and talk ... as good friends should and do. We clasp our hands ... our voices ring with laughter .... My God and I ... walk through the meadow's hue." And if any of you have old songs ... please join in with a snippet of your own. But please keep them to a Redwood sized Snippet. Don't give it away too easily.

Here's a song that has cool words. They were written by a classmate of mine from Academy. But you would know the well known group that sang it. "Every time the Lord says go, the devil seems to stand in the way.
It seems like he thinks up a million things hopin' to keep us a-way.
Well, someone's sick and the car won't go, and the guitar never sounded so.
But the love of Jesus and the Holy Spirit keeps us travelin' on." Can you name the song title? Who wrote the words? The music? Name the group that made it famous ..... Need some clues???

Here's another song from that same classmate of mine ... Maybe this one is more familiar ....
Wait for me Jesus ........
For I am so slow So tired and small.
Wait for me Jesus ..........
For I am so frail I am nothing at all.
Wait for me Jesus .........
For I am so lost with so much I just do .
Wait for me Jesus ........
For all of my life I've been searching for YOU.
The next verse ... COMFORT me Jesus ..... etc

OK. SOMEONE out there ought to at least know the name of the group that sings these songs. Here is one that the group made famous ...
My troubles are many and my pleasures are few.
I guess life is always that way.
But I don't complain 'cause I know I'll be free if I can get to heaven one day.
But tell me, Where am I now? Am I almost there? Is that heaven's bright glory I see?
Is that Jesus I hear calling out my name? Is the door standing open for me?

I found it!!! In a sermon, "ORDAINED TO SERVE" at http://www.prophecywatch.biz/Page%2021%20Ordained%20to%20Serve.htm Life Is A Wonderful Thing Words and Music by Tom Hughes My troubles are many; my pleasures are few; I guess life is always that way. But I don’t complain ‘cause I know I’ll be free; If I can get to heaven someday. Chorus But tell me, where am I now? Am I almost there? Is that heaven’s bright glory I see? Is that Jesus I hear calling out my name? Is the door standing open for me? Sometimes I get weary; I don’t know where I stand. I stumble and fall on the way. But Jesus has promised to reach out His hand; I’ll get to heaven someday! Chorus My friends don’t believe me when I tell them it’s true That somewhere there’s a home made for me. They’re all made of gold and there’s one made for you. Come with me to heaven and see! Chorus Is that door standing open for me?

Thanks for the post and sermon. I thought this part of the sermon was interesting ... The Priesthood of All Believers...
The Ohio Conference and the Seventh-Day Adventist Church does not discriminate when it comes to men or women in ministry.
The policy of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church: ...both men and women can be elders, ...both men and women can be deacons, ...both men and women can preach; ...both men and women could be deaconesses. Some here would disagree with that part of your link. Some would also disagree with the author of the song. My songbook says that BONNIE LETCHER wrote the words and music. So, we have a conflict. Do we believe the internet or my songbook? Anyway ... now that I've revealed the author ... can anyone tell me the SDA group that sang it?

A snippitt from http://old.spectrummagazine.org/library/columns2001/010803daffern.htmlI remember that in 1972 Bonnie Letcher and two seductively spiritual young men sang of our apocalyptic anxieties. "But tell me where am I now? Am I almost there? Is that heaven’s bright glory I see? Is that Jesus I hear calling out my name? Is the door standing open for me?" I also remember that my good friend Brad almost died at Soquel that year after swallowing several reds and a fifth of Southern Comfort.

BTW. I wrote to Tom Hughes who had been given credit for Bonnie's song. He made sure there was a correction on that site. So, now Take Three has the credit ... thanks to your uncovering this miscarriage of justice. Thanks dAb

But to save Stan's [computer memory] space on this board I won't copy them here. Can't recall the name of the man who used to sing this song the most.... (just getting too old, I guess!)

I once was lost in sin ... but Jesus took me in.
And then a little light from heaven filled my soul.
It bathed my heart in love and wrote my name above.
And just a little talk with Jesus made me whole ......
Have a little talk with Jesus ... tell Him all about our troubles.
Hear our faintest cry .... answer by and by.
Feel a little pray'r wheel turning ..know a little fire is burnin
Find a little talk with Jesus makes it right.
OK. End of song. But I SEE you ... I just don't know about those gyrating hips of yours.

Tempted and Tried, we're oft made to wonder.
Why it should be thus all the day long,
While there are others living about us
Never molested though in the wrong.
Farther along we'll know more about it,
Farther along we'll understand why;
Cheer up my brother, live in the sunshine,
We'll understand it .... all by and by.

Hi Denise. Thanks for joining WOD. This song just hit me this week. I've sung it many times but never really understood the words below ... While there are others living about us
Never molested though in the wrong. It seems that those who love Jesus and follow his truth ... THEY are the most "molested". And it seems unfair at times while we suffer. But we are called to do this. We are also called to live in the sunshine while we are being "molested". That is what I am trying to do. Thanks again and come back soon.

I Need Thee Every Hour.
I need thee every hour, Most gracious Lord,
No tender voice like thine,
Can peace a..ford.
I need thee O, I need thee, Every hour I need thee! O bless me now, my Saviour, I come to Thee.
I need Thee every hour, In joy or pain,
Come quickly and abide,
Or life is vain.
I need Thee O, I need Thee, Every hour I need thee O, Bless me now, my Saviour, I come to Thee.

His Eye is on the Sparrow
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why should I feel discouraged Why should the shadows come Why should my heart be lonely And long for heavenly home When Jesus is my portion? My constant friend is He His eye is on the sparrow And I know he watches me His eye is on the sparrow And I know He watches me
I sing because I’m happy I sing because I’m free For His eye is on the sparrow And I know He watches me
“Let not your heart be troubled” His tender word I hear And resting on His goodness I loose my doubts and fears Tho’ by the path He leadeth But one step I may see His eye is on the sparrow And I know He watches me His eye is on the sparrow And I know He watches me
Whenever I am tempted Whenever clouds arise When song gives place to sighing When hope within me dies I draw the closer to Him For care He sets me free His eye is on the sparrow And I know He watches me His eye is on the sparrow And I know He watches me

We have an anchor -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Will your anchor hold in the storms of life, When the clouds unfold their wings of strife? When the strong tides lift and the cables strain, Will your anchor drift, or firm remain? Refrain
We have an anchor that keeps the soul Steadfast and sure while the billows roll, Fastened to the Rock which cannot move, Grounded firm and deep in the Savior’s love.
It is safely moored, ’twill the storm withstand, For ’tis well secured by the Savior’s hand; And the cables, passed from His heart to mine, Can defy that blast, thro’ strength divine.
Refrain
It will surely hold in the Straits of Fear— When the breakers have told that the reef is near; Though the tempest rave and the wild winds blow, Not an angry wave shall our bark o’erflow.
Refrain
It will firmly hold in the Floods of Death—- When the waters cold chill our latest breath, On the rising tide it can never fail, While our hopes abide within the Veil.
Refrain
When our eyes behold through the gath’ring night The city of gold, our harbor bright, We shall anchor fast by the heav’nly shore, With the storms all past forevermore.
Refrain

Happy Sabbath
All Things Bright and Beautiful
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Refrain
All things bright and beautiful, All creatures great and small, All things wise and wonderful: The Lord God made them all.
Each little flower that opens, Each little bird that sings, He made their glowing colors, He made their tiny wings.
Refrain
[Most hymnals omit the following verse]
The rich man in his castle, The poor man at his gate, He made them, high or lowly, And ordered their estate.
Refrain
The purple headed mountains, The river running by, The sunset and the morning That brightens up the sky.
Refrain
The cold wind in the winter, The pleasant summer sun, The ripe fruits in the garden, He made them every one.
Refrain
The tall trees in the greenwood, The meadows where we play, The rushes by the water, To gather every day.
Refrain
He gave us eyes to see them, And lips that we might tell How great is God Almighty, Who has made all things well.
Refrain

Happy End of Sabbath
Day is Dying in the West
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day is dying in the west; Heav’n is touching earth with rest; Wait and worship while the night Sets the evening lamps alight Through all the sky. Refrain
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts! Heav’n and earth are full of Thee! Heav’n and earth are praising Thee, O Lord most high!
Lord of life, beneath the dome Of the universe, Thy home, Gather us who seek Thy face To the fold of Thy embrace, For Thou art nigh.
Refrain
While the deepening shadows fall, Heart of love enfolding all, Through the glory and the grace Of the stars that veil Thy face, Our hearts ascend.
Refrain
When forever from our sight Pass the stars, the day, the night, Lord of angels, on our eyes Let eternal morning rise And shadows end.
Refrain

Interesting comment, Gladussee.
Both those hymns were "Sabbath sundown" hymns for our family, too, when I was growing up.
Did you have somebody playing an instrument while you sang? Or were you singing a cappella? with perhaps some family members harmonizing with the tenor part, or the alto part?
For harmonizing, I would prefer "Now the Day is Over" because of its lovely tenor part.

Go to Dark Gethsemane
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Go to dark Gethsemane, ye that feel the tempter’s power; Your Redeemer’s conflict see, watch with Him one bitter hour, Turn not from His griefs away; learn of Jesus Christ to pray.
See Him at the judgment hall, beaten, bound, reviled, arraigned; O the wormwood and the gall! O the pangs His soul sustained! Shun not suffering, shame, or loss; learn of Christ to bear the cross.
Calvary’s mournful mountain climb; there, adoring at His feet, Mark that miracle of time, God’s own sacrifice complete. “It is finished!” hear Him cry; learn of Jesus Christ to die.
Early hasten to the tomb where they laid His breathless clay; All is solitude and gloom. Who has taken Him away? Christ is risen! He meets our eyes; Savior, teach us so to rise.

LOVE LIFTED ME
I was sinking deep in sin, far from the peaceful shore, Very deeply stained within, sinking to rise no more, But the Master of the sea, heard my despairing cry, From the waters lifted me, now safe am I. Refrain
Love lifted me! Love lifted me! When nothing else could help Love lifted me!
All my heart to Him I give, ever to Him I’ll cling In His blessèd presence live, ever His praises sing, Love so mighty and so true, merits my soul’s best songs, Faithful, loving service too, to Him belongs.
Refrain
Souls in danger look above, Jesus completely saves, He will lift you by His love, out of the angry waves. He’s the Master of the sea, billows His will obey, He your Savior wants to be, be saved today.
Refrain

Majesty
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Majesty, worship his majesty; Unto Jesus be all glory, honor, and praise. Majesty, kingdom authority, Flow from his throne unto his own, his anthem raise. So exalt, lift up on high the name of Jesus. Magnify, come glorify Christ Jesus, the King.
Majesty, worship his majesty, Jesus who died, now glorified, King of all kings.

Great Is Thy Faithfulness
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father; There is no shadow of turning with Thee; Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not; As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be. Refrain
Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see. All I have needed Thy hand hath provided; Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
Summer and winter and springtime and harvest, Sun, moon and stars in their courses above Join with all nature in manifold witness To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.
Refrain
Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide; Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!
Refrain

I love the tune to this one. And also the words ...
Day by Day
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day by day, and with each passing moment, Strength I find, to meet my trials here; Trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment, I’ve no cause for worry or for fear. He Whose heart is kind beyond all measure Gives unto each day what He deems best— Lovingly, its part of pain and pleasure, Mingling toil with peace and rest.
Every day, the Lord Himself is near me With a special mercy for each hour; All my cares He fain would bear, and cheer me, He Whose Name is Counselor and Power; The protection of His child and treasure Is a charge that on Himself He laid; “As thy days, thy strength shall be in measure,” This the pledge to me He made.
Help me then in every tribulation So to trust Thy promises, O Lord, That I lose not faith’s sweet consolation Offered me within Thy holy Word. Help me, Lord, when toil and trouble meeting, Ever to take, as from a father’s hand, One by one, the days, the moments fleeting, Till I reach the promised land.

This is a Great One ...
Until Then
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My heart can sing when I pause to remember A heartache here is but a stepping stone Along a trail that's winding always upward, This troubled world is not my final home.
Chorus But until then my heart will go on singing, Until then with joy I'll carry on, Until the day my eyes behold the city, Until the day God calls me home.
The things of earth will dim and lose their value If we recall they're borrowed for awhile; And things of earth that cause the heart to tremble, Remembered there will only bring a smile.
Chorus But until then my heart will go on singing, Until then with joy I'll carry on, Until the day my eyes behold the city, Until the day God calls me home.
This weary world with all its toil and struggle May take its toll of misery and strife; The soul of man is like a waiting falcon; When it's released, it's destined for the skies.
Chorus But until then my heart will go on singing, Until then with joy I'll carry on, Until the day my eyes behold the city, Until the day God calls me home.

I grew up enjoying this one . I remember a famous singer with a deep rich voice singing it.
I'd Rather Have Jesus-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold; I’d rather be His than have riches untold; I’d rather have Jesus than houses or lands; I’d rather be led by His nail-pierced hand
Refrain:
Than to be the king of a vast domain, Or be held in sin’s dread sway; I’d rather have Jesus than anything This world affords today.
I’d rather have Jesus than men’s applause; I’d rather be faithful to His dear cause; I’d rather have Jesus than worldwide fame; I’d rather be true to His holy name
He’s fairer than lilies of rarest bloom; He’s sweeter than honey from out the comb; He’s all that my hungering spirit needs; I’d rather have Jesus and let Him lead

Thanks, Redwood, I know and love all the old tunes you posted!!!! My, my, my, those were the days...
Here's another one that we used to sing in days gone by:
Will There Be Many Stars?
I am thinking today of that beautiful land I shall reach when the sun goeth down; When thro' wonderful grace by my Savior I stand, Will there be many stars in my crown?
In the strength of the Lord let me labor and pray, Let me watch as a winner of souls; That bright stars may be mine in the glorious day, When His praise like the sea billow rolls.
Oh, what joy it will be when His face I behold, Living gems at His feet to lay down; It would sweeten my bliss in the city of gold, Should there be many stars in my crown.
Chorus
Will there be many stars, many stars in my crown When at evening the sun goeth down? When I wake with the blest In the mansions of rest, Will there be many stars in my crown?
Love it!! Suzanne

Was that famous singer named George Beverly Shea, by any chance? I remember hearing him sing, too. Wasn't it on Billy Graham's programs? Good memories. Good lyrics and melodies.

Yes, you are right Jeannie. His voice will forever be in my memory. What a man. And yes, I think he was on Billy Graham's programs. But, my parents had a record of him singing. And they played it over and over. With good reason.
And thanks for joining this thread.

Thanks Suzanne. I can hear this old tune running in my mind. And thanks for dropping by. Hope you will add more songs when they come to your mind. I think this is a good thing to do. The new songs are fine but we can be blessed by recalling some old ones with old memories of how the Lord has blessed.

One more good oldie ....
There's a Wideness in God's Mercy --------------------------------------------------------------- There’s a wideness in God’s mercy, Like the wideness of the sea; There’s a kindness in His justice, Which is more than liberty. There is no place where earth’s sorrows Are more felt than up in heaven; There is no place where earth’s failings Have such kindly judgment given.
There is welcome for the sinner, And more graces for the good; There is mercy with the Savior; There is healing in His blood.
There is grace enough for thousands Of new worlds as great as this; There is room for fresh creations In that upper home of bliss.
For the love of God is broader Than the measure of our mind; And the heart of the Eternal Is most wonderfully kind.
There is plentiful redemption In the blood that has been shed; There is joy for all the members In the sorrows of the Head.
’Tis not all we owe to Jesus; It is something more than all; Greater good because of evil, Larger mercy through the fall.
If our love were but more simple, We should take Him at His word; And our lives would be all sunshine In the sweetness of our Lord.
Souls of men! why will ye scatter Like a crowd of frightened sheep? Foolish hearts! why will ye wander From a love so true and deep?
It is God: His love looks mighty, But is mightier than it seems; ’Tis our Father: and His fondness Goes far out beyond our dreams.
But we make His love too narrow By false limits of our own; And we magnify His strictness With a zeal He will not own.
Was there ever kinder shepherd Half so gentle, half so sweet, As the Savior who would have us Come and gather at His feet?

How true this song is ... People need the Lord
----------------------------
Everyday they pass me by, I can see it in their eyes. Empty people filled with care, headed who knows where. On they go through private pain, living fear to fear, Laughter hides their silent cries, only Jesus hears.
People need the Lord, people need the Lord. At the end of broken dreams, He's the open door. People need the Lord, people need the Lord. When will we realize...people need the Lord?
We are called to take His light to a world where wrong seems right. What would be too great a cost for sharing life with one who's lost. Thorough His love our hearts can feel all the grief they bear. They must hear the words of life only we can share.
That we must give our lives for People need the Lord, people need the Lord.

People need the Lord, people need the Lord. At the end of broken dreams, He's the open door. This is the key ... We must be broken in order to be filled. We must have OUR dreams broken and then we can open the door. Then HE can give us a dream. He will fill our lives much better than we ever could have imagined.
