ADRA STARTS NEW PROJECT IN ZAMBIA [Bert Smit, ADRA-UK Director]

Pansi Katenga, ADRA-UK Programmes Officer, is in Zambia this week to help the local ADRA office launch a new poverty alleviation project.

One thousand chaka hoes*, 1,000 farmer tool kits and 50 treadle pumps for simple irrigation are just a sample of what ADRA will distribute in the project. Co-funded with the European Commission, the initiative starts today, Friday, 1 February and aims to provide three meals a day for the poor in the Senaga District of Zambia.

Mrs Katenga reported, "This project will make a significant difference in the lives of many of the poorest people here. Just imagine what it is like to have only enough food for just half of the year. Most people have to survive on one meal of maize a day."

Malnutrition in this Western province of Zambia is very high, 45% of the population do not have access to enough food with current farming methods only providing sufficient food for around 5 or 6 months of the year.

ADRA will enhance household food security among the poor people here by teaching better agriculture techniques and introducing better nutritional planning. Training will address the low agricultural yields and will allow households to produce enough food stocks to last them a whole year. Introducing alternative crops, more suitable to the arid climate, will also help to address the problem.

Due to the close relationship that exists between food insecurity and HIV/AIDS and gender, the project will mainstream HIV/AIDS focusing on increasing awareness of the public at large on the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS.

The project will benefit more than 6,000 people and will last 24 months. ADRA-UK is providing 10% of the 600,000 Euro budget. Mrs Katenga is very positive about the project: "Our work will bring hope to these people and give them opportunities to escape poverty."

BEING PRAYED FOR

Twice daily prayers are making a difference for hundreds of individuals across the UK and Ireland. Peter asked for special prayer to live a new life. Kwame has been troubled by nightmares. Pearl has asked for prayer as she goes for surgery. The name and background does not matter. Whether a confession of sin, a request for healing, or a family need, special requests are prayed for each morning during staff worship in the British Union Conference office. As headquarters for the Seventh-day Adventist church in the UK and Ireland, staff consider it a privilege that people will write in and trust them with their prayer requests.

Many requests come from students of the Adventist Discovery Centre (ADC) who either write in with their special requests or submit them online at <http://discoveronline.org.uk>. In addition to prayer at morning worship all these students also receive special prayer at noon each day as ADC staff place their hands on their "prayer basket" and place each student in the hands of God. "This is a special time for our staff," states ADC principal, Des Rafferty. "We pray for each request but we doubly rejoice as we find students writing back to tell us how God has worked in their lives."

After a recent prayer session Pastor Rafferty received an email from Ellen. She had written concerning medical problems with her knees. Now she stated, "What can I say but the Lord really does heal, my knees feel a lot better... Thank you so much for your prayers."

ADC staff were touched by a letter from Freda. "Don't get me wrong about praying," she wrote. "I know how to pray but the words don't come out right. I love the Lord and I think he is great." Staff were not only able to pray for Freda, but writing an encouraging and understanding letter also helped her to develop a personal prayer life.

Similar prayers happen in the Conference and Mission offices and with prayer partners across the country. The Newbold church pastoral team pause at 7.00 pm each day knowing that they are joining in prayer with some of the 1,000 who attend their worship services each Sabbath. Other churches have "prayer warrior" teams that meet in the week, early on Sabbath mornings or during the Sabbath lunch hour.

Pastor Eglan Brooks takes the power of prayer seriously. As BUC Personal Ministries, Church Growth and LIFEdevelopment director he states that, "the precious prayers of fellow Christians are intimate moments with God and that fellow traveller, as God works out His purpose in the life of the individual. We still have yet, to really understand the power of our simple payers." Quoting the comforting words of 2 Chronicles 7:14 he states, "If my people, who are called by my name, would humble themselves and 'just' pray, what an intimate experience we would have with God and each other." Along with the rest of the staff at church headquarters we would encourage you to join in a daily time of prayer, thanking God for His blessings, trusting Him with our lives, and sharing with Him our needs.

HELPING AIDS ORPHANS IN KENYA [June Coombs]

Stanborough Park church minister, Ian Sleeman raised just over £2000 in one day to help his mother-in-law, Betty, look after the children of AIDS victims at her orphanage in Western Kenya. On Sabbath, 26 January she shared her fascinating story.

As a nurse, Betty Hewitt wanted to achieve her lifelong ambition of becoming a medical missionary. In 1979 she went to Africa, working in hospitals in Sierra Leone, Malawi and Zambia. Whilst working in Malawi she developed an interest in AIDS/HIV and eventually trained as a Natural Remedies Consultant in the USA. Following this she accepted a post as Natural Remedies Consultant HIV/AIDS to the Military Medical Services at the National Service Military Unit at Kafue, Zambia.

After working there for three years she was able to establish that by using certain natural remedies it was possible to control HIV if caught early enough and she dreamed of developing a Natural Remedies HIV/AIDS clinic. Lacking the funds to achieve this and having reached retirement age, Mrs Hewitt was contemplating returning to Britain in 2002 when generous benefactors offered her the funding to achieve her dream. This led to the construction of a 24-bed clinic with eight bedrooms and four bathrooms.

Just before the clinic was due to be opened to patients Mrs Hewitt paid her annual visit to her family in England. On her return to Kenya she discovered that in her absence the Kenyan Child Welfare Authority had placed 85 orphans in the building - mostly sleeping on the floor (the total has now risen to 90) - as it was the most suitable place in the local area.

This unexpected change of direction saw the birth of the Guccha Orphanage as she and her staff of six and two guardians set about caring for the children aged between three and fourteen years. With no official income or help from charities Mrs Hewitt relies on her personal pensions and donations from friends and relatives to feed, clothe and educate the children. The local schools have admitted the children and Mrs Hewitt pays the fees for the secondary children. Most go to day schools but some attend boarding schools. The local Welfare Officer checks the background of each child ensuring that they are all genuine orphans.

It costs approximately 1000US$ (£500) a month to feed the children, pay their school fees, uniforms and medical expenses. With funds running out, her son-in-law Ian decided to ask the Park church members for help. Following a PowerPoint presentation outlining the challenges and a few words from Mrs Hewitt on Sabbath morning, a collection was taken which raised £2,024.08 for the project. In addition many people offered to sponsor an orphan. The family say, "we are very thrilled" with the response.

Mrs Hewitt returns to Kenya at the beginning of February, happy in the knowledge that she has an unexpected windfall to help with her work whilst she struggles to find additional funding from charities and government departments.

CLEAR DAY COMING [Terry Messenger, SEC Personal Ministries & Sabbath School Director]

"We received some solid teaching today," remarked one of the attendees. "This will prove very useful as we go back to our churches." He was reflecting on the South England Conference Personal Ministries, LIFEdevelopment, Church Planters and Interest co-ordinators AGM held on Sunday, 27 January at the Advent Centre in London.

A morning devotional explaining that Jesus asked someone to roll away the stone at the raising of Lazarus illustrated the fact that Jesus has chosen frail humanity for the task of preaching the gospel. Following prayer Terry Messenger, Personal Ministries and Sabbath School director for the South England Conference, outlined the role and ministry of the local church Personal Ministries leader emphasising the fact that greater impact on the community would be made if the departments of the church would work closely together.

Pastor Eglan Brooks, the Personal Ministries, Church Growth and LIFEdevelopment director at the British Union then led out explaining the vital role of the Interest Co-ordinator and explained the concept of LIFEdevelopment and how by utilizing its methods we could more readily reach the secular mind and more effectively retain new converts.

We then broke for a sumptuous lunch after which Pastor Aris Vontzalidis, Church Growth director at the SEC outlined how to plant healthy churches. He explained that it is not enough simply to plant a church but that there are certain principles which should be in place to ensure healthy growth. Petras Bahadur, the Adventist Muslim Relations director at the SEC added a thrilling and eye opening account on how to reach the Muslim community. Nigel Nicholls, the Adventist Special Needs Association director, then encouraged us as to how our churches could be more user friendly for the disabled.

The day ended with leaders praying for each other that the work would progress in the UK. Each Personal Ministries leader was given a practical book on leading Personal Ministries in the local church. One person remarked, "This day has made it much clearer as to what to do when I get back to my church."

THE STAR OF BETHLEHEM MYSTERY [Mart de Groot/Irish Mission News]

In the run up to Christmas, Pastor Mart de Groot, a former astronomer at the Armagh Observatory, presented two lectures about the identity of the star of Bethlehem. The first, on Tuesday, 18 December, was within the framework of the holiday programme organised by the local Council. An audience of some 50 people joined him at the Flowerfield Arts Centre in Portstewart, County Londonderry, to discuss the various astronomical explanations that have been offered for the 'star'. Meteors, comets, novae, supernovae and peculiar conjunctions of the planets were all found to be falling short in one or more aspects of the Bible story as it is found in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. God's dislike of astrology contrasts with His use of angel messengers whenever important news has to be communicated to His earthly children. In her book "The Desire of Ages" Ellen White also states that the star that appeared to the Magi was a band of angels. On Thursday, 20 December the second lecture was presented in the Ashdown Park Hotel in Gorey, County Wexford, and had been organised by church elder, Alex Hill. Some 30 of his friends from a variety of religious denominations attended. Their appreciation was apparent after the lecture when the usual question time lasted a full hour engendering much interesting discussion. The Gorey audience is now looking forward to another visit by Mart when he will speak about the origin of the earth and the universe.
