JOHN LOUGHBOROUGH SCHOOL UPDATE [Richard de Lisser, SEC Communication Director]

[Editor's Note: Following the request for prayer in last week's BUC News #576 (22 February) and several news stories in the local London press this week the South England Conference have issued the following statement on behalf of the Seventh-day Adventist owned, John Loughborough School in Tottenham, North London.]

The John Loughborough School has always aimed to be a beacon of educational excellence in the community, by providing a holistic education for its students. Mrs Laura Osei, currently head teacher of The Eden Seventh-day Adventist School in Hanworth, Middlesex has today been appointed as Interim Executive head teacher of the John Loughborough Seventh-day Adventist Secondary School located in Tottenham, North London. Mrs Osei won the Promethean Award for School Leadership in 2003 and has since been involved with developing school leadership across the London area.

Mrs Osei's leadership style will add to the Adventist ethos of mental, physical, social, and spiritual health, intellectual growth, and service to humanity that form the core of values of Adventist educational philosophy.

In recent times the John Loughborough School has unfortunately seen a decline in its educational standard of excellence. The disappointing GCSE results have been of concern to staff and governors alike and steps have been taken over the last year to turn the school around.

The interest and well being of the students and their academic attainment and achievement is the first priority of the South England Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. As the foundation body we are cooperating with the local authority and are also fully represented and engaged with the Interim Executive Board. We are willing to work in consultation with the Parent Teacher Association and any other interested parties, to drive up standards at the school and achieve the educational excellence that is the goal of each of the pupils attending the school.

DEREK PARAVICINI IN CONCERT [Miriam Wood]

Derek Paravicini is a 'living ipod'. He remembers every piece of music he has ever heard. An amazing gift in a skilled concert pianist who is blind, can't tell left from right, and requires 24-hour care. Yet he stunned his audience at Newbold Church Centre, Binfield, Berks, on Saturday night, 23 February, enthralling them with his skill and personality. Derek, originally from Berkshire, was born prematurely, is blind, severely learning disabled and autistic but musically he is a genius and is well-known around the world. He has appeared on TV many times.

He played to a highly appreciative audience, thrilling them with his mastery of the keyboard, his ability to play requests, to instantly play, "I want Jesus to walk with me", a song previously unknown to him, and to accompany professional violinist, Chris Rogers, whom he met just prior to the concert and had only rehearsed with very briefly. Derek loves playing popular music but with Chris played Bach's "Air on the G string" as one of their items.

"The piece was so beautifully performed that it brought tears to my eyes," admits Miriam Wood, organiser of the concert. Miriam is Lead Music Therapist for Learning Disabilities with Berkshire East PCT NHS Trust and a member of Maidenhead church in Berkshire.

"I have followed Derek's progress over the years," she says "and it was my aim for a long time to bring him back to Binfield. I first heard him play many years ago during a concert with the Binfield Singers in St Marks Church when he was just a young lad. This time he played across the road at Newbold Church Centre."

The concert raised over £400 for Newbold Primary School's funds. The school choir opened the concert with arrangements of two hymns. Pupil Gregory Makachouck opened the second half by playing two pieces on the clarinet, accompanied by his mother, Tanya. Asha, daughter of Chris Rogers, delighted everyone with a violin solo, Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nacht Musik".

Newbold College Music Director, Dr Sandra Rigby-Barrett, accompanied items throughout the evening while Dr Adam Ockelford, Professor of Music at Roehampton University, who was Derek's teacher from an early age, spoke to the audience about Derek's life and the development of his amazing talent. "You may think that a gift like this comes easily," said Adam "but Derek practises hard, usually up to two hours a day."

ENTHUSIASTIC LEARNING FOR SCOTTISH LEADERS [John Wilby, SM Communication Sponsor]

On Sunday, 24 February, 30 lay church leaders gave up their "day off" and, from all parts of Scotland, descended on Crieff. They were joined, from further afield, by Victor Hulbert and Eglan Brooks, BUC Communication and Personal Ministries and LIFEdevelopment directors, respectively, and by Anette Moore, Welsh Mission Children's Ministries sponsor.

They were not disappointed. The Scottish Mission's annual Church Officers' Training Day provoked such comments as: "I feel really empowered now to enhance my children's lesson studies" (Skha Ndlovu, Personal Ministries Secretary, Glasgow); "It will give me much more confidence in fulfilling my new role" (Sonja Eikum, Communication Secretary, Aberdeen).

In a devotional thought to set the tone of the day for all participants, Victor Hulbert paraphrased 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 with a "Scottish Mission Body of Christ" - all departments being inter-dependent and most effective when working together. He followed with a wide ranging workshop that included the following advice to those responsible for effective church communications:

Church Directory Inserts: "Make sure visitors can find your church, for example, in Council websites, telephone directories and university church lists".

Church Appearance & Signage: "View your church through the eyes of a first attending non-Adventist. Is it well maintained and welcoming? Is your external sign up to date and using language others can understand? Remember, 'Sabbath' to most people means 'Sunday'. 'Bible Study' is more descriptive and meaningful than 'Sabbath School'."

Responding to TV, Radio and Press Enquiries: "In times of trouble, if a journalist calls or stuffs a microphone in your face, you don't have to answer immediately. Unless you have been previously briefed with the facts and are authorised to comment, take their details and promise that you or someone you can refer to will get back to them. NEVER say 'No comment'"!

Writing for the Messenger/BUC News/local newspaper: "If you haven't caught my attention in the first 8 seconds you probably haven't caught me. Put the most important thing at the top of the story".

Photography: "Take action shots. Shots where people are interacting! They're a lot more interesting and will catch the eye of the reader. Take lots of pictures but only send me the good ones."

In other workshops, Eglan Brooks promoted the BUC's LIFEdevelopment programme as an effective means of reaching secular indigenous Scots. Anette Moore, assisted by Moyra Rodd and Judith Martin, introduced participants to the Grace Link curriculum and involved them in practical Cradle Roll activities. Karin Edwards, SM Prayer sponsor, introduced "Prayer Lab" experiments and SM Youth sponsor, Pastor Marcel Ghioalda, dealt with parental relationships and guidance in challenging teenage years.

All those who attended will undoubtedly now be more "thoroughly equipped for every good work". (2 Timothy 3:17). The day was perhaps best summed up by Mission President, Llew Edwards. He said, "It is just so inspiring to see leaders coming to training because they are committed to building great churches".

A selection of photos from the training day can be viewed on the BUC picture gallery, <www.adventist.org.uk>.

1,200 GATHER FOR YOUTH MINISTRY & MUSIC RALLY [Eugene James, LYF President]

Out of the silence from the back of the hall, the Pathfinder Drum Core marched through the 1,200 young people in a spectacle of talent, disciplined drumming and clashing brilliance heralding the start of The London Youth Federation Youth Ministry and Music Rally Day on Sabbath, 9 February at the Emmanuel Centre, London.

Under the theme of the day, "Experience the Will of God", the LYF Evangelism team, Johnathan Ukueku and Jermaine Dantzie, opened Sabbath School with an interactive study of discipleship and the full armour of God. Innovative ministry utilising visual media with sharp PowerPoint and video clips kept the young people focused and alert, recognising the need to clothe themselves with the armour of God in order to be an effective disciple for Jesus Christ.

Demonstrations of effective youth ministry came from GOMAD, Footsteps Ministry, and Personify. These creative ministries made it clear that there are more than 100 ways to evangelise and impact the community and peers for God's glory!

LYF President, Eugene James, charged the youth to find new ways to minister, challenging them to do more for God by experiencing His will knowing that they were created for great things and have a great purpose. "You were created to be conformed to the image of Christ," he told them. Vice President Aldray Barwise, welcomed the youth with a very distinct Jamaica dialect and got the youth warmed up with hugging one another bringing over the concept that this year is about forming relationships as Christ did and building upon those relationships in order to win souls for the Kingdom of God. The youth responded with cheer and energy as Aldray stirred them up with the mission of the LYF in 2008.

A mustard seed taped inside the bulletin provided surprise as Pastor Clive de Silva opened their eyes to God's truth of faith as small as a mustard seed - the realisation of the creativity and power of God was made real. As Clive expounded upon how the mustard seed as small as it is in their hands can move mountains and grow into one of the largest garden plants, the term of "planting seeds" for God was metaphorical, literal and real as the youth broke out into prayer groups. Clive gave opportunity for the youth to not only talk to God in prayer but to sing to God in prayer as the male group "Saved" sang the mustard seed song and the congregation joined in.

The Praise team led the congregation to worship as they started with a rendition of Psalms 150 and burst into harmony with songs of praise as Kwaku led out also sharing a heart filled testimony of self worth and God's grace.

Jermaine Wong was introduced as a man who is poetic by nature, an international speaker, youth and elder for Kennington Community Fellowship. Under the title, "Don't follow the crowd, Follow God," he gave a message that brought hundreds of young and old to the alter for rededication and commitment. Structured around Numbers 13 "Move forward in faith and get out of the wilderness of Paran," Jermaine suggested that if there is one thing the congregation shouldn't forget it is "Never follow the crowd."

Adrian Blake, LYF Music Chair hosted the afternoon programme with renditions, words of encouragement and a mime from Blessed Voices, No Labels, Inspired Praise, Friends and Joel & Co.

The day closed with an appreciation of thanks given to all the young people who chose to continue to live for God. Visit this story on our BUC News page: <www.adventistnews.org.uk> for links to two picture galleries of photos from this event.

MESSAGE OF HOPE FOR ZIMBABWEANS [George Nyatanga]

"Our God is Still on Time" was perhaps an apt theme for the one thousand people, mainly Zimbabweans, who converged onto the Metrodome Leisure Complex, Barnsley for the Zimbabwe Day of Fellowship, Sabbath, 23 February. With the theme song, "Lift up the trumpet Jesus is coming again", the Sabbath School programme was led by Unlimited Praise, a musical group from Leeds who blessed the congregation with uplifting speeches and music presentations. The Sabbath School lesson was presented by Pastor Tawanda Ncube.

Tributes were paid to the lives of Gladwell Sibanda, the former interim vice-chairman of the fellowship, and Pastor Marovha of the East Zimbabwe Conference who passed away on 14 December 2007 and 18 January 2008 respectively.

"Reflections" focused on the challenges being faced by nations all over the world. Prayers were offered for people in the Middle East (Iraq, Israel, Afghanistan), Africa (Kenya, Darfur, Chad, Nigeria), Asia and USA. Zimbabwe was specifically remembered as the country faces elections on 29 March 2008.

The congregation was also advised of the plans by ADRA-UK to ship a container to Zimbabwe. ADRA-UK have asked the Zimbabwe-UK Seventh-day Adventist Fellowship (ZUSDAF) to spearhead the mobilisation of high value items to fill this container and also help with the clearance of the shipment costs in Zimbabwe. All those willing to help can contact Project Zimbabwe at <zusdaf@yahoo.co.uk>.

Pastor Don McFarlane, BUC President graced the congregation with his sermon entitled "He is Still Coming". Based on the words of Hebrews 10:35-37, Pastor McFarlane dismissed the theory by some commentators that religion is for the weak who have no courage to face life's challenges. He spoke strongly about the hope we have in the Second Coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Emphasising God's ability to keep His promises he stated, "Abraham was a good example of how God's word does not fail... He is coming the second time in accordance with prophecy and John 14." The sermon finished with an appeal that when Jesus comes the second time we be ready to meet Him.

The afternoon programme was one of 'sweet music' from various groups around the country. Halfway through the presentation, Pastor McFarlane once again spoke on the challenges that the church faces in ministering to the secular community in the UK. This, he said, called for us to know the different methods of reaching these people. He emphasised on the importance for our members to be able to make a distinction between standards and practice and between method and mission. There are important values we need to remember to observe as we seek to witness to the community where we live.

Sister Nyabunze delivered a powerful vespers message about the need for people to use their God given talents.

The next Zimbabwe Day of Fellowship will be on 31 May 2008 at Milton Keynes. For further details please contact ZUSDAF at: <zusdaf@yahoo.co.uk>.
