APOLOGETICS WEEKEND A FIRST FOR ADVENTIST YOUTH [Gideon Kumi/BUC News]

A first for Seventh-day Adventist youth world-wide, some 600 young adults came together over the Easter break to study Christian Apologetics. Meeting in the Paragon Hotel, Birmingham, the "Advance" conference gave delegates opportunity to learn from workshops designed to enable them to effectively reach secularists along with other faiths such as Islam and Judaism. There were also plenary sessions that focused on defending Adventist beliefs like the Sabbath, the State of the Dead and the Sanctuary doctrine.

Advance was the brain-child of Pastor Alan Hush, North England Conference Youth Ministries director who believes that this was a much needed 'first' for Adventist Youth. He stated that, "we have identified that our youth need strengthening in certain areas. One of the areas... is giving them confidence back in their own church, their own denomination and also the need to have confidence in the Christian faith."

That was a vision that Andrew from Bolton found helpful. "I have a lot of friends that are atheist that I want to reach for God," he stated. "I don't feel equipped enough. I've come to gain some understanding and techniques and can go away prepared."

Living in a society where the belief that God created man, or that the earth was called into existence labels us as religious fundamentalists makes it hard for young people to stand up for what they believe in, for fear of standing out. Advance provided roughly 300 conference delegates, and by the weekend, over 600 attendees from across Europe and America, with the opportunity to challenge the secularist view. Top speakers such as Clifford R Goldstein, editor of the Adult Sabbath School lessons, Randy Skeet, a church planter and evangelist, a youthful Jeffrey Rosario, part of the Radiant Living team in Vancouver, Canada and Jude Jeanville, Dean of Men at the University of the Southern Caribbean, Trinidad, were among the many to provide intellectual insight and counsel.

Andrea from South Wales attended the conference as someone who has been a church member for five years. "However," she says, "I do feel the struggle to defend my faith". Tamara, from the Leeds church, has recently graduated from university. "I have to be here as I have a work to do," she insists. "I've been there three years and none of my friends have been reached." God put me at the university for a reason." She now has a strategy in mind for sharing her faith.

Pastor Hush believes that the conference was a success, noting that there was a thirst among the youth for the knowledge and expertise that the speakers brought to help them survive within the ever-increasing secular environment. Pastor Des Boldeau, Youth Ministries director for the British Union Conference was impressed with the balanced presentations. "In the church we tend to have factions," he said. "I'm not experiencing that here. This encourages young people to think about the practical issues. For me that is a positive thing."

It is clear that Adventist young folk have an interest and a spiritual aptitude. Through the weekend they expressed a desire to learn about the many issues both theological and ethical. Fevered debates could be heard in the corridors and the dining room. "They're thinking about these issues. It has value," Pastor Boldeau feels. "I think we could have this kind of programme rolled out elsewhere. It is balanced."

As the first conference of its kind, Hope Channel-UK was present to film parts of the programme for a documentary on "Advance". This should be available on the web at <www.hopetv.org.uk> within the next two weeks and on satellite at a later date. A selection of photos from the event are available in the BUC picture gallery <www.adventist.org.uk>.

SIGHTS SET HIGH FOR ANNUAL APPEAL

Gloomy economic forecasts and wintry weather are no deterrent for the enthusiastic volunteers who will be knocking on doors for the next three weeks in aid of the charity ADRA-UK. "The 2008 appeal for the Adventist Development and Relief Agency could be our largest collection yet," states Bert Smit, ADRA-UK director. "The level of enthusiasm has been incredible," he states, referring to ADRA awareness and training programmes that he has been involved with over the last six weeks. Now he and his team are praying for sunshine and receptive hearts as volunteer collectors start knocking on doors this Saturday, 29 March.

One of those who will be taking time from his busy schedule to collect is Pastor Don McFarlane, President of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the UK and Ireland. He cannot resist the challenge of the annual appeal. "I am always impressed by the generosity of the British public," he states. "When I knock on the doors and explain with a smile what ADRA is doing they are more than happy to donate. Of course, they can only give if I take the time to ask. It is important that each one of us makes time to ask."

He will be joined by thousands of other volunteers across the country. Pastor Roy Morgan is coordinating the programme in the North of England and is aiming to increase the collection there up to £250,000. His motto for this year comes from Ronald E Osborn: "Undertake something that is difficult; it will do you good. Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered you will never grow." He is already very encouraged by the enthusiasm of the collectors and challenges them to "do something new".

Pastor Terry Messenger is appeal coordinator in the South of England. As a keen runner he is also delighted to join in a fun run at Crystal Palace on Sunday, 20 April. "This is always a great opportunity to meet the public and to enable them to take part in this worthy project. We never know who we are going to meet and where indeed that meeting may lead. It was through someone knocking on my wife's door with a red tin many years ago that she started attending church."

The annual appeal is not just about collecting money. It is more seriously about empowerment and changing peoples lives. Writing in the 21 March edition of the Messenger, Mr Smit states, "we call it empowerment - giving opportunities. It is one of the basic principles ADRA uses in working with vulnerable communities around the world. We can distribute food to the hungry, and tomorrow they are hungry again. Or, we can teach the hungry to produce food for themselves and feed them for a lifetime. This empowerment principle is key to Christian social concern and community service, both overseas and in our own communities."

Maybe you did not realise there was such power in a little red collecting box. A few hours knocking on doors here may make a life-time of difference elsewhere. For up-to-date information on this year's Annual Appeal and more "Give Opportunities" visit the ADRA-UK website at <www.adra.org.uk>.

TEEN CD RAISES £1,200 FOR MISSION TRIP [John Wilby, Scottish Mission Communication Sponsor/BUC News]

A Crieff teenager who found she was too young to join a Mission trip to Romania turned her disappointment to joy for others. Talented musician, Yvonne Bauwens decided, instead, to record her own and other's compositions, and sell CD copies. Her generous gesture and strong determination raised £1,200 towards the Mission's cost.

This selfless act was recognised at the Easter Weekend Three Missions Youth Retreat at Loch Lomond. One hundred and fifty Adventist youth from Scotland, Ireland and Wales witnessed TED Youth Ministries director, Paul Tompkins present her with a special award. As part of the Centenary Adventist Youth celebrations the General Conference decided to recognise youth who had achieved something extraordinary.

Named after the World Church's first Youth Director Yvonne was one of two nominees in the Trans-European Division to receive the M E Kern Award. In the form of an hour glass, the award represents the GC's theme of "Time" - time for young people to be involved, time to get connected, time to use their talents. Pastor Tompkins said, "Yvonne represents young people giving their talents for God. As well as supporting Mission Projects she has also been very active in other events throughout Scotland and also further afield. In fact her composition was chosen as the theme song for the 2006 TED Pathfinder Camporee held in Stevninghus, Denmark. She has consistently been a supportive and positive influence, despite not always enjoying the best of health, and remains committed to serving others. It has been a pleasure to be able to present to her this special award."

MUSIC4CHILDREN WEEKEND [Richard Christie and Pauline Matturi]

Harp, guitar, violins, drums, keyboards, flute and voice joined together on the weekend of 21 - 23 March, to produce great melodies and harmonies. Twelve children between the ages of 8 to 13 from Nottingham, Leicester and Birmingham descended on the Bilberry Training Centre to develop, practise and share their musical skills.

Organised and lead by Dr Diana Sinclair, the Music sponsor for the North England Conference, the weekend saw music workshops, worship sessions, rehearsals, along with an exciting walk in the Lickey Hills, a lot of laughter, games and socialising making for a great combination of music education and fun.

Throughout the weekend, powerful messages were delivered about the importance of a life consecrated to serving God through music and, of course, there was always the music. Rehearsed and practiced they performed for each other and, at the end of the weekend in concert to their parents and carers.

Supporting "Auntie Diana" were expert and committed music leaders in Richard Christie, Chris Harris, Leroy Grant and Jeanetta Liburd. A great menu was prepared and presented by Sister Sinclair, snr. House mum, Pauline Matturi found it easy to keep order in an environment with such well behaved children.

The children were the main beneficiaries of such a wonderful weekend. Bethany, from the Windsor Street South church in Birmingham summed it up: "I've played music with other children before, but there was something different about last night. It was special."

NOW IS THE TIME - HEALTH MINISTRIES IN WALES [John Surridge, Welsh Mission President]

Over the Easter weekend approximately twenty people attended a Welsh Mission Health Retreat in the Hebron Hall Christian Centre, Dinas Powys, near Cardiff. The theme for the retreat was "Now is the Time" and the guest speaker was BUC Health Ministries director Sharon Platt-McDonald.

In her opening talk Sharon pointed out that the positive impact of an Adventist lifestyle has hit the headlines in the last few months, with articles appearing in the newspapers as well as on television. She also highlighted the interest that is now being shown by the scientific community. Although much of this interest has focused on the predominantly plant-based diet recommended by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, faith and hope also play their part. Sharon underlined this aspect of the Adventist lifestyle by liberally illustrating her talks with relevant quotations from the Bible.

The Health Retreat was organised by Welsh Mission Health Ministries sponsors, Irving and Lil Saunders. In addition to their administrative duties Irving and Lil, together with Gerrard Fordham from the Carmarthen church, also did the cooking. Other helpers included Evan and Lorna Green from the Newport church and Eric Lawrence from the North England Conference.

The retreat formed part of an overall Health Ministries strategy in the Welsh Mission to refocus the minds of church members on the benefits of the Adventist lifestyle. Although Adventists have a wonderful heritage in the area of health this is not always evident in the lifestyles of members. Over the last two months Lil and Irving, who are both healthcare professionals, have been running a MicroCHIP programme in the Port Talbot church. The weekly meetings have been well attended and the lectures, together with the healthy food, regular blood pressure checks and weigh-ins have had a tangible impact on most of those who have attended. One lady with diabetes saw her blood sugar level drop from a dangerous to a relatively safe level, and several have lost weight.

Welsh Mission President Pastor John Surridge is fully behind Lil and Irving's Health Ministries strategy and has attended several of the events that they have organised. Speaking after the weekend he said, "Health is an ideal topic for the church to promote at the moment. Everyone is interested in their own health and, especially since Jamie Oliver's TV series on healthy eating in schools, diet has become a major talking point. The supermarkets are getting involved as well with food labelling spelling out the nutritional value of their products, and we've never seen so much vegetarian food on display."

"The Adventist Church was a major force in the anti-smoking movement," he continued. "That went mainstream and now we are seeing the same thing happen with other aspects of healthy living. It would be a terrible shame if our present church members, who are looked to for an example of how to lead a healthy lifestyle, were themselves to miss out on the great benefits that the traditional Adventist lifestyle has to offer."

A selection of photos from the Health Ministries Retreat can be seen in the gallery section of the Welsh Mission website at: <www.adventistwales.org>.

STEVE OKELO "FINANCIAL FITNESS A PRIORITY"

Taking over the reigns as Associate Treasurer for the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the UK and Ireland, Steve Okelo could have been daunted by the size of the task. It is a job that calls for an eye to detail and carefully working through problems.

"I really wanted to work for the Lord with my abilities in finance," Steve told BUC News. However, the last few months have been a learning curve. "The job is a lot deeper than I thought," he confessed. "There is a lot to understand how the church works. It is very detailed and very wide."

Steve, who has served as an elder in the Plumstead church for the last three years, finds his new job very interesting. "I am a solution orientated person," he says. That is important as part of his role involves working with churches, the Conferences and the solicitors to facilitate the purchase of new buildings. When churches are competing against property developers in a difficult market this makes for very detailed work. "When I see a solution it really gives me pleasure," he states with his characteristic broad smile.

As Associate Treasurer Steve supports Mr Victor Pilmoor who has served as BUC Treasurer for seven years. Among his specific responsibilities are preparations for the audit, looking after the BUC accounts, and within the legal framework of the church dealing with property contracts and associated legal issues.

Steve's financial career began in Nairobi, Kenya where he served as an accountant for Organisation for African Unity and on EU/UN projects. It is in Nairobi where he met his wife, Pauline. From there he was encouraged to come to England where he studied for a BA in accounting and business at Sunderland University, attending the Newcastle and South Shields churches. Steve replaces Donovan Cleary who left the BUC to accept a call to serve as Secretary-Treasurer of the East Mediterranean Field based in the Lebanon. All enquiries regarding property issues and the SDAA Ltd should now be directed to Steve. More details in this regard can be found on the Seventh-day Adventist Association page of the BUC website, <www.adventist.org.uk>.

ADRA DEVELOPMENT EXPERIENCE TRIP CANCELLED

The ADRA Development Experience Trip to Burkina Faso planned for this summer has been cancelled due to insufficient applications. The trip, which would have taken a group of up to twenty-five 18-35 year olds to the heart of West Africa, had only two applications in, even after extending the deadline for applications by 6 weeks.

Participants on this trip would have been able to see the real difference a development project can make to the lives of the people we work with. The trip would showcase this with participants living and working together with beneficiaries and experiencing how our time and support can help others.

ADRA-UK applies financial, material, and technical resources toward the relief of poverty, sickness and distress of those in need, resulting from the effects of war, famine or any other natural or man-made disaster anywhere in the world. For more on ADRA-UK please visit <www.adra.org.uk>.
