Akseli Gallen-Kallela (April 26, 1865 – March 7, 1931) was a Finnish painter who is best known for his illustrations of the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic. His work was considered very important for the Finnish national identity.

Victor Westerholm, Finnish painter 1860-1919). "He studied at the School of Drawing in Turku from 1869 to 1878. In 1878 he travelled to Düsseldorf and enrolled at the Kunstakademie, where he attended classes on landscape painting by Eugen Dücker until 1886.
