SWIM, RUN, KNOCK AND JUMP
Fifty metres swimming, 50 bean-bags caught, 50 baskets hit. These are just a few of the ways in which the Camp Hill Seventh-day Adventist church Pathfinders raised funds for ADRA's Annual Appeal. Aptly titled 'Do 50 4 ADRA' the one-day event last Sunday, 30 March, at a local Sports Centre helped raise funds for the Annual Appeal which benefits development and relief projects around the world and in the UK. Club leader Ken Burton states that the club's thought was: "Why should we be special and the only ones to go camping? Let's give the ones with real special needs the chance to enjoy it too!" That same Sunday saw members of the Newbold Seventh-day Adventist church participate in a FunRun at the Great Park in Virginia Waters. Participants enjoyed a great day of wonderful sunny weather as well as raising funds for their favourite charity.
The ADRA office is still distributing the very popular new ADRA lanyard for the collector's badge. "This really makes a difference," reports Bert Smit, ADRA-UK director. He has been fielding many phone calls and requests leading up to the appeal and has sent out thousands of lanyards. He says, "Volunteers really love the lanyards. I am really surprised how positive they feel about them. It gives a professional edge to the collector's appearance as they knock on doors collecting for ADRA.
Maritza Sabatier is one of those collectors. She says, "the hardest part of Ingathering is leaving your comfort zone and getting out there. One fervent prayer as you do so and all fears melt away - you do not even notice the people who you know are in but do not come to the door when you ring the bell, or those who flatly refuse to give. And yet, the satisfaction gained from all the others who do give, and maybe the one contact you may make with one individual, as has been my experience on the first day I went out, makes the whole exercise so worthwhile."
She is one of the many thousands who have the chance to collect for one more week (two weeks in London). She feels a real burden for more of her friends, and church members across the country to take the challenge and collect for a few hours. "Just think," she says, "if all members went out just a few times and collected any sum of money, what a difference it would make to our final figures, and hence to all the good that can be achieved for so many less fortunate than we are."
Another popular new option for raising funds during the Annual Appeal is the new Gift Aid envelope available from the church Ingathering Agent or from the ADRA-UK office. The South England Conference is also organising the annual FunRun at Crystal Palace on Sunday, 20 April. Why not come and enjoy a nice walk, run or bike ride AND support ADRA? 'MAGNIFICENT CHANGE' FOR READING CENTRAL [Corinne Felix]
The Reading Central Seventh-day Adventist church has undergone a magnificent change. Seven weeks of major renovation works, from plastering and painting the walls within the sanctuary, to installation of a floor to house the Pastor's Vestry, installation of windows in the school room and additional female toilets. The renovations were undertaken by contractor, Miroslav Mojzes and his team in conjunction with Pastor Steve Thomas and Elder June Thompson, an accomplished interior designer.
This project which has been on the drawing board for the past five years has now come to fruition. In the interim the church family held its worship services at the Reading University and on 8 March 2008 returned to their beautifully renovated sanctuary.
Members of all ages described the transformation as; "wonderful, marvellous, great change, very warm, much brighter, the colour of walls and chairs has made the church more welcoming. Comfortable - no more hard chairs."
Many members came together a week before the reopening of the church to assist in the clearing of rubble, cleaning and decorating.
Although this magnificent change has taken place, there is still the problem of accommodation, for the church was packed beyond capacity on the day of reopening and rededication of the church building. Whether it was from members visiting from other churches to celebrate with Reading Central, or new visitors, the challenge - though a good one - is still there.
The dedicatory service was conducted by Pastor Steve Thomas based around the dedicatory prayer offered by Solomon after the completion of the temple. 'Magnificent change' then took place in another way as in the afternoon service four individuals demonstrated their choice to follow Jesus in an act of baptism. Robert Bezuidenhout, Trudy Duckeridge, Taciana Oakley and Paige Wilkinson had been studying the Word of God over the past year with the Bible worker and elders of the church. Family members and friends celebrated and the church was packed to capacity once again.
"MAN ON A MISSION" STEPS FORWARD IN FAITH WITH OTHERS [Sonja Eikum]
Every single pew was filled to capacity at Aberdeen church on Sabbath, 29 March 2008 to witness the baptism of three young men who stepped forward in faith. They were close friends Mwai Mkukuma, Kevin Sukati and Ian Kay. Pastor Brian McCormac set a spiritual tone when he spoke about "What must I do to be saved".
Ian has been attending Aberdeen church intermittently for the past couple of years. However, he has found his gift and is now a truly dedicated "Man on a Mission". Recently, while on a research trip to Zambia, he observed the tremendous work that Kitwe Women's Ministries and associated groups do. Amongst other things, they have set up feeding stations for families, an HIV Clinic and Mothers Shelters. Ian was so impressed with the work of these dedicated women, and came back on such a spiritual high, that he is in the process of setting up a charity to help support causes like those in Zambia. In June he is planning to cycle from Galway to Aberdeen to raise funds for the Women's group in Zambia.
Kevin's baptism follows a move to Aberdeen nine years ago with his parents. He is a very committed member of the Pathfinder Club and his hidden musical talent includes playing the saxophone. However, this was both a happy and sad occasion. Because their visas have expired, Kevin and his mum will be leaving Aberdeen church and moving back to Africa to join his father.
During his baptismal classes, Mwai enjoyed challenging Pastor McCormac and constantly questioned him about what they were studying. A committed member of the Pathfinder Club, he enjoys assisting in their fundraising events and is looking forward to the Pathfinder Camporee this summer.
All three express their appreciation to the Aberdeen members and their families for the utmost support they received in preparing for this day.
If you would like to support Ian's charity or receive more information regarding the different areas he is supporting please contact Ian by email at: <Ianbrucekay50@talktalk.net>.
SIMPLE REFLECTIONS - IMAGES OF GOD'S LOVE [Heather Haworth, BUC Children's/ Women's/Family Ministries Director]
For the first time, women from the British Union linked with another Union to run a joint retreat at de Bron in the Netherlands. The BUC/Netherlands Women's Retreat ran the weekend of 28-30 March with guest speakers from the General Conference, Mrs Heather-Dawn Small, Women's Ministries director, and her Associate Mrs Raquel Arrais. Their presentations focused on how women can reflect the images of God's love in a practical caring way in their home, workplace, college and church. "It was inspiring to hear quality women preachers who were totally passionate about what they were sharing," stated Marci Neal from Ireland after the event. "I hope to get Heather-Dawn Small to Ireland next year I was so impressed. They are gifted communicators."
In her Sabbath afternoon workshop, Raquel also spent a special time with the young ladies challenging them to be empowered by the Holy Spirit. "Like Esther of old," she said, "God needs women today to put His cause first." Another workshop speaker was Mrs Karen Holford. Her room was crammed in by over 100 women wanting to learn how to not only pray creatively themselves, but also to share these activities with their church. Valerie Fidelia's seminar was musical. She turned 60 ladies into a choir whose Sunday performance of the 23rd Psalm received an ovation.
The joint nature of the event was reflected in the programme. The song leader, Renate, was Dutch; the Sabbath mission appeal was by the British, Judith, Ruth and Malika. A number of Dutch women translated the speakers but a majority of those from the Netherlands understood English. When it came to the creative arts evening on Saturday, a favourite feature of the Dutch retreat, translation was not really needed. All eyes focused on the sample picture of a vase with, of course, tulips, and happy chatter accompanied the painting. Although not Rembrandts, the ladies proudly packed their canvas very carefully so it could grace their wall at home.
Although a BUC student had her laptop stolen at the Amsterdam airport, she still felt blessed by attending. Three other women rejoiced as their visas finally arrived the morning of the retreat. Clair Sanches, the Netherlands Union Women's Ministries director, commented at the end of the retreat what a joy it was to see the ladies from two Unions enjoy fellowship and spiritual renewal. Heather Haworth, the BUC Women's Ministries director, announced, to the jubilation of the congregation, they were planning to invite the Dutch ladies over in 2010. She continued saying "the BUC is looking forward to doing a UK and Eire style of retreat" and thanked Clair and her team for their hospitality.
A selection of pictures from the retreat can be seen on the BUC picture gallery: <

SPRING HARVEST IN SEC [Richard de Lisser, SEC Communication Director]
Spring is in the air. The daffodils are blooming, the apple and cherry blossoms are resplendent in their array of colours. Everything is fresh and new: new growth, new beginnings, and new life. The joys of spring can be felt across the churches that comprise the South England Conference as many have been engaged in a flurry of evangelistic activities.
In the Brixton church, Pastor Ainsworth Joseph of the Kingsboro Temple church in New York, along with singing evangelist Racquel Faircloth of Jamaica, concluded a series of meetings on Sabbath, 29 March 2008 with a baptism of 14 individuals while another 30 are being prepared for baptism in the near future. It is hoped that by the end of 2008 the Brixton church will surpass the 1000 member mark. Their membership currently stands at 979.
In September 2007 Pastor Joseph also conducted a series of meetings at the Croydon church. Thirty-eight individuals were baptized at the time with an additional ten joining the church through baptism on Sabbath, 26 January.
During March the Edmonton Central and the Tottenham West Green Road churches invited Pastor Steve Riley of the South Caribbean Conference to conduct their annual Youth Week of Prayer, the meetings concluded with seven persons being added to the church through baptism.
The Church at Enfield, under the leadership of Pastor Jon Gendle, increased their church membership by adding 3 new members through baptism in February. The Church specializes in 'process evangelism' which means that, rather than having campaigns run at intervals, regular Sabbath morning services are designed to be 'unchurched friendly' and contemporary in style in order to best attract people from the local community.
Spring is just the beginning. Across the Conference evangelism in its many forms continues, and summer awaits our earnest efforts for the Kingdom.
'NOW IS THE TIME' CD RAISES FUNDS FOR ADRA
Accomplished musician Paul Lee has produced a CD compilation of songs entitled 'Now is the time' that he has recorded over a number of years with fine Christian musicians and vocalists including Ken Burton, the Croydon Adventist Gospel Choir, and the London Adventist Chorale. Proceeds from the compilation of 15 songs will go to the 2008 ADRA Annual Appeal. Paul says, "ADRA is a world-class charity and is doing a fine work. I really wanted to do something with my love of music to support them." The guide price for the CD is £8.00 but Paul is leaving it to individuals as to how much they would like to donate for this special CD project. Send your donation with a clear return address to: Paul Lee, South England Conference, 25 St John's Road, Watford, WD17 1PZ and he will send you a copy of the CD. Please make all cheques payable to ADRA-UK.
