The long black horizontal area running across the canyon wall is a partially burned log which was uncovered over many years by the the action of the water in the riverbed.

During the day he his body belonged to the foreman on his laboring job, but at night he was God's man going to various pentecostal churches to preach the gospel. I went along with him on a few of his trips, once to a church in Costa Mesa, near Los Angeles, and another time to a barrio (poor neighborhood) in Mexicali. There he would buy rice and beans and candy and drive through the barrio inviting over the loudspeakers for all the barrio to come out to the evangelistic meeting. Afterwards he would give out the food. He'd usually draw a fairly large crowd, so big that he had to hold the service outside the church. Jose was illiterate and therefore he had to memorize the taped Bible studies and sermons that he listened to on his recorder during his lunch-break at work.

A "charro"-- a member of the Mariachi, the Mexican band. A close personal friend of mine, he came to the US to escape the social unrest happening in Mexico during the 1930s.

A genuine "ghost-town" if ever there was one, in northern CA, near the Nevada border. Found in the 1870s, it boasted by 1880 of a population of about 7, 500 souls. A typical town of the very wild West.
