A place John Steinbeck knew well and wrote about in his books, Cannery Row and Tortilla Flat.

I've never been inside it. I imagine it's pretty nice. When were you there?

Downtown Arcata has some interesting architecture. Also, the people I met there-- I was in grad school at the university and had lots of time to take in the town-- reminded me of what people were like in the late 60s. Seemed like a town stuck in a time groove.

Bodie is in northern California, near the Nevada border. To reach it one must travel about 60 miles over rough, dirt road. But well worth it to any who enjoy a true ghost town and are interested in the history of the West.

This was my first photograph in a project of photographing trailer courts throughout Southern California. I was at first skeptical of its potential but I soon found that it is a gold-mine of wonderful images.

I simply walk through trailer parks with my camera and photograph anything that seems to me to best reflect my sense of the character of the place and of the people living there. I find that even after 9/11, people are friendly and welcome a good conversation on their porches and even in their trailers. Soon I plan to include photographs of the denizens in their homes and later I will also record their voices telling about their lives there.
