Far more men than women pay for sex in general (of course). According to Sex for Sale: Prostitution, Pornography, and the Sex Industry by Ronald Weitzer, a 1994 national poll found that 18 per cent of American men and 2 per cent of women had paid for sex. The book also reports a study in 2000 that 10 per cent of British men under age 35 had "bought sex from a prostitute" and 7 per cent of Canadian men reported they had "paid for sex."

I read this on www.canoe.ca a Canadian Site.. as s student of Sociology I am eager to find why the gap between Canadian Men 7% and American 18%.

Please this thread is NOT about pros/cons of the financial exchange.
Americans go to Church way more than Canadians, a HUGE difference.

Thoughts anyone??

Having never been to Canada (except for a few days, about 25 years ago), I can't speak from personal experience about Canadian society. I am wondering about the influence of Canadian TV, advertising, music, general culture, etc. US culture is heavily influenced by Mexican/American and black subculture, for instance. Do you see any big differences in those aspects between Canadian and American life? Are the mores pretty much the same?

In the past 8 years, I think I have only seen 4 mexicans in British Columbia, Canada.
Our second language is Chinese, in British Columbia.
Very few Africa-Americans, but lot of West Indians (Sig different Culture)
TV shows are 80% US based or so
There is more nudity on free-to-air TV here, and cable..

The thought of paying for sex is revolting to most guys I know.
Prostitution is legal, soliciting is not legal. Not sure how that balances out.

Even though we may 'look the same' our culture is quite different.. ie Canada never had any Indian wars. The US had almost a genocide.

Gays can marry.

Still 7% vs 18% is a HUGE difference.

I wonder what NZ is, where females have more sexual partners than elsewhere in the world.

Did Canada go through anything like what Americans did in the so-called "Sexual Revolution" of the 60s and 70s? Of course, the truth is that our sexual revolution really started in the 1920s, shortly after the First World War. There is no question that this revolution got a boost from World War II. Rock and Roll as well as jazz were both a product and a cause of this revolution. They helped to encourage a certain viewpoint that welcomed sexual openness and made it acceptable to do sexual things that before were discouraged. They made it sound as if you were missing out on life, or that you were "square," if you didn't experience sex with different partners. That kind of thinking became part of our "pop culture."

We have many writers like Henry Miller and John Richy who made a virtue out of how many partners a person could have in a single day, and the film business did all it could to surpass them. Of course we also have publications like Playboy, etc., which literally sell the idea that there is nothing wrong with any sexual practice, including paying for it.

I have a feeling that Canada is not immune or inexperienced in any of these things, but there is no question that the US sees much more of them.

Collectors are always paying for sets. They'll pay a lot of money to complete their sets. It's kind of an obsession.

I thought of that too. But the fact that Canadians may not be totally honest about paying for it, and Americans would be more willing to tell the truth about it, itself appears to show that there may be a general difference on this point between the nationalities.

Back when I was young & not in church, I once spent 4 or 5 days in Victoria BC. I had a great time, met a lot of nice and beautiful people, and didn't spend all that much, not like that anyway. didn't have too.

Yes, the area of Victoria is where I also went once for a relative's wedding, and met lots of nice people, and saw a traditional Canadian wedding. I wasn't there long, but I did notice some differences. I remember the beautiful coast of Canada in that area, too.
