I thought of that too. But the fact that Canadians may not be totally honest about paying for it, and Americans would be more willing to tell the truth about it, itself appears to show that there may be a general difference on this point between the nationalities.
Wonder why that is...

In the past 8 years, I think I have only seen 4 mexicans in British Columbia, Canada.
Our second language is Chinese, in British Columbia.
Very few Africa-Americans, but lot of West Indians (Sig different Culture)
TV shows are 80% US based or so
There is more nudity on free-to-air TV here, and cable..
The thought of paying for sex is revolting to most guys I know.
Prostitution is legal, soliciting is not legal. Not sure how that balances out.
Even though we may 'look the same' our culture is quite different.. ie Canada never had any Indian wars. The US had almost a genocide.
Gays can marry.
Still 7% vs 18% is a HUGE difference.
I wonder what NZ is, where females have more sexual partners than elsewhere in the world.
Canadians are better liars, or more FREE sex!  Gerry

Wonder why that is... Hard to tell exactly. Most likely the difference in attitude and behavior is due to a number of factors. Are there leaders, such as mayors, governors and pastors, who have been arrested in Canada for soliciting prostitutes? After the New York governor was arrested, there were quite a few people who argued for the legalization of prostitution so more people could go to them without being punished for it. The attitude was, "What's wrong with going to a prostitute?" Evidently most Canadians believe prostitution should be legal. But yet they must attach a strong negative value to men who go to them. Interesting catch-22.

A couple of scenarios crossed my mind.
1) American men are just more perverted than Canadian men.
2) American women are less likely to give it away than Canadian women.

My 'Canucks lie' comment was definitely a joke: it wouldn't surprise me at all if, instead, the stats are accurate. Despite being so close geographically, Canada and the US are quite dramatically different socially, and a number of those factors could contribute to this stat. I find Canada much more like Australia socially than I find it like America, but I'm not sure what the stats are in Oz.
I wonder whether it relates to the definition of 'sex' a bit too (Paging Dr Clinton ;)) - perhaps one survey included things like massage services and so on...
