I've said for a long time that the idea of a 'unitary self' (which is a fancy way of saying 'you' or 'me') is an illusion that we have because it makes life simpler for us (and possibly also as an artefact of using language, but that's a more complex point for another discussion).
We could argue that there's some kind of 'core' personality, but certainly what comes out in any particular context will be different - whether that is online or 'in real life' (I prefer the term 'face-to-face', since I regard online life as still being real), or whether it's at church or at work or at home or with friends or out in the bush or...
I think a kind of rigid 'I'm the same person everywhere' attitude, far from being the honest way to be, just means that you will have no social skills and not be able to interact appropriately with those around you in different contexts.
Having said all that, I do believe it's possible for *all* of our different personas to be honest, ethical and authentic - it's when we have a persona that contravenes our core *values* that we move into hypocrisy and danger.

Adobe! Hehehe! Gail knows her Boticelli well!
Another question: are you the "you" that God had in mind when He created you? Have you veered off the path, or are you exactly where He hoped you'd be at this (and every) moment?
And if you're not the "you" that He intended you to be, then are you somehow a false version of yourself? What's holding you back from being the perfect child of God? Why hide under a false persona? Why hide under a bushel?? God didn't create me. He created Adam and then Eve. I'm just one of umpteen b'zillion morphed genes away from the fall of those prime ideal parents. I have no idea if I am a true or false version of myself since I don't know what my Father's original thought of me was.

I think I am sweeter and more thoughtful online than I really am! That's because I take time to ponder before I hit the submit button here. I don't have such a button on my mouth, though I am trying to grow one.

How do you differ between circumstances, if you do? Just because I have a jail record and am wanted as an ax murderer, con Artist, and political junkie doesn't mean that I have a "Telephone Voice".... [con Artist mode-on] And if you believe this, I have this bridge I can sell you....[con Artist mode-off]

As you can see, I use my real name and not hide behind a fictitious one. I believe that what you see/read of me online/telephone is what you get. But then it's probably better to ask someone else to see if that's really true.Gerry

I think I am pretty much the same everywhere. However, there are things that I would share with close personal friends, whether on-line or face-to-face, that I would not share on a public forum. I certainly wouldn't talk to my children the same way I would talk to a girlfriend, etc......
We all have different aspects to our personalities which are triggered under different circumstances.

I still remember some of the words:
Well, we all have a face that we hide away forever, And we take them out and show ourselves when everyone has gone. Some are satin, some are steel, some are silk, and some are leather. They're the faces of The Stranger, but we love to try them on.

Hi Gail and others. I am pretty much the same here and there. I tend not to get angry in public. I am gracious and forgiving to strangers to a certain degree. Those who should know better I have a tendency to have less patience with. Injustice is what sets me off. I find that when my heart is turned to the Lord nothing can change my peace and joyfulness. Norman (that's my real name, who would choose such a name as a handle?)

How do you differ between circumstances, if you do? Sista Gail, We need to hide ourselves and grow smaller and smaller and let the Lawd come thru and show His personality. It's Him that needs to be magnified and me that needs to be small-i-fied...His personality that shines thru me, as I am only the instrument....Yes, the I AM needs to be fully revealed thru me!

[ Hmmmmm......I wonder if someone is playing Brutha? If not forgive me...just a thought.... Sister Denise You are indeed, most forgiven in your assessment. It is obvious, by your mannors that you have minimally experienced the proper protocal of South. Of course, regarding our mannor of speech, which is to say, most genteel toward our friends and deadly toward our ennimees....And the Lawd commands us to be friends to everyone and to reach out to all....bearing the burdens of all desciples and friends of our Lawd, talking in song and psalms toward all...allowing the sward of the spirit to split asunndar even to the marrow of the bone those who would not heed the calling of the Spirit.

>>I live in the South and that accent isn't it.<< Florida, right? I thought that was more - Cuba North and New York South - than, let's say, Appalachia (less PA and NY) - and/or other points South :-) QR frame: Lawd. Lord. Is this the sort of thing that generated the occasion of ‘nit-picking/brouhaha wars’ of recent memory? I remember receiving grief for my representing Elohiym with the consonants Gd. (mo’ bettah ah shoulda used YWHW? Sheesh)

>>Gd shows respect for the Lord. "Lawd" just shows ignorance.<<
I can accept your appraisal and respect the measure of that position. That notwithstanding,
it sometimes behooves us to allow for another's endeavour to phonetically represent his or her 'persona' (not unBiblical, is it?) -- without disparagement; otherwise, we simply indulge in parochialism.

I know of at least one comment by a Christian author that says, "Christians should be as transparent as glass", or words to that effect. I'm thinking whatever you, Gladussee, have in mind, if it cannot be spoken plainly for all to see, it would be better if it were washed away by Jesus' blood. "....let God become true, and every man false, according as it hath been written, `That Thou mayest be declared righteous in Thy words, and mayest overcome in Thy being judged.'" Romans 3:4 YLT Regards!
