Memory Text: Hebrews 8:1 NKJV “Now [this is] the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens,”

Sunday – Pointers from the Ancient Tabernacle
1. Morning and Evening Sacrifice
Exodus 29:38-42 NKJV “38 ¶ "Now this [is] what you shall offer on the altar: two lambs of the first year, day by day continually. 39 "One lamb you shall offer in the morning, and the other lamb you shall offer at twilight. 40 "With the one lamb shall be one-tenth [of an ephah] of flour mixed with one-fourth of a hin of pressed oil, and one-fourth of a hin of wine [as] a drink offering. 41 "And the other lamb you shall offer at twilight; and you shall offer with it the grain offering and the drink offering, as in the morning, for a sweet aroma, an offering made by fire to the LORD. 42 "[This shall be] a continual burnt offering throughout your generations [at] the door of the tabernacle of meeting before the LORD, where I will meet you to speak with you.”
2. Shewbread and candlesticks
Exodus 25:23, 30-31,37 MKJV “23 You shall also make a table [of] acacia-wood, its length two cubits, and its breadth a cubit, and its height a cubit and a half. 30 And you shall set upon the table showbread before Me always. 31 ¶ And you shall make a lampstand [of] pure gold. The lampstand shall be made of beaten work; its shaft, and its branches, its cups, its knobs, and its blossoms, shall be from it. 37 “And you shall make the seven lamps of it. And one shall light the lamps of it, so that they may give light on its face.”
Numbers 28:1-6 MKJV “1 ¶ And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2 Command the sons of Israel, and say to them, My offering [and] My bread for My sacrifices made by fire, a sweet savor to Me, you shall be careful to offer to Me in their due season. 3 And you shall say to them, This [is] the fire offering which you shall offer to the LORD: two lambs of the first year without spot day by day, a continual burnt offering. 4 The one lamb you shall offer in the morning, and the other lamb you shall offer between the evenings. 5 And a tenth of an ephah of flour for a food offering, mixed with the fourth of a hin of beaten oil. 6 [It is] a continual burnt offering which was ordained in Mount Sinai for a sweet savor, a fire offering to the LORD,”
3. The Day of Atonement ceremonies
Leviticus 16 – see this chapter.
Hebrews 9:1-12 ESV “1 ¶ Now even the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly place of holiness. 2 For a tent was prepared, the first section, in which were the lampstand and the table and the bread of the Presence. It is called the Holy Place. 3 Behind the second curtain was a second section called the Most Holy Place, 4 having the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was a golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron’s staff that budded, and the tablets of the covenant. 5 Above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail. 6 These preparations having thus been made, the priests go regularly into the first section, performing their ritual duties, 7 but into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood, which he offers for himself and for the unintentional sins of the people. 8 ¶ By this the Holy Spirit indicates that the way into the holy places is not yet opened as long as the first section is still standing 9 (which is symbolic for the present age). According to this arrangement, gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper, 10 but deal only with food and drink and various washings, regulations for the body imposed until the time of reformation. 11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) 12 he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.”
4. The high-priestly garments
Exodus 28:6-21 KJ21 “6 ¶ and they shall make the ephod of gold, of blue and of purple, of scarlet and finetwined linen, with skillful work. 7 It shall have the two shoulder pieces thereof joined at the two edges thereof, and so it shall be joined together. 8 And the embroidered girdle of the ephod which is upon it shall be of the same, according to the work thereof: even of gold, of blue and purple and scarlet and finetwined linen. 9 And thou shalt take two onyx stones, and engrave on them the names of the children of Israel: 10 six of their names on one stone, and the other six names of the rest on the other stone, according to their birth. 11 With the work of an engraver in stone, like the engravings of a signet, shalt thou engrave the two stones with the names of the children of Israel. Thou shalt make them to be set in clasps of gold. 12 And thou shalt put the two stones upon the shoulders of the ephod for stones of memorial unto the children of Israel; and Aaron shall bear their names before the LORD upon his two shoulders for a memorial. 13 And thou shalt make clasps of gold, 14 and two chains of pure gold at the ends; of wreathed work shalt thou make them, and fasten the wreathed chains to the clasps. 15 ¶ "And thou shalt make the breastplate of judgment with skillful work; according to the work of the ephod thou shalt make it: of gold, of blue and of purple, and of scarlet and of finetwined linen shalt thou make it. 16 Foursquare it shall be, and doubled: a span shall be the length thereof and a span shall be the breadth thereof. 17 And thou shalt set in it settings of stones, even four rows of stones: the first row shall be a sardius, a topaz, and a carbuncle; this shall be the first row. 18 And the second row shall be an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond; 19 and the third row a ligure, an agate, and an amethyst; 20 and the fourth row a beryl and an onyx and a jasper. They shall be set in gold in their enclosings. 21 And the stones shall be with the names of the children of Israel, twelve according to their names, like the engravings of a signet; every one with his name shall they be according to the twelve tribes.”

Monday – All Pointers Led to Him
John 1:29 Holman “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Here is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
John 1:29 COMMENTARY THE FOURFOLD GOSPEL Lambs were commonly used for sin-offerings (Le 4:32), and three of them were sacrificed in the cleansing of a leper (Le 14:10). A lamb was also the victim of the morning (9 A.M.) and evening (3 P.M.) sacrifice (Ex 29:38)--the hours when Jesus was nailed to the cross and when he expired. A lamb was also the victim at the paschal supper.

Tuesday – Our High Priest
Hebrews 8:1-2 “1 ¶ Now the main point of what is being said is this: we have this kind of high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, 2 a minister of the sanctuary and the true tabernacle, which the Lord set up, and not man.”
Hebrews 2:18 NRSV “Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.”
Hebrews 2:18 COMMENTARY BY ADAM CLARKE The maxim on which this verse is founded is the following: A state of suffering disposes persons to be compassionate, and those who endure most afflictions are they who feel most for others.
Hebrews 7:25 NRSV “Consequently he is able for all time to save those who approach God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.”

Hebrews 8:3-10 NRSV “3 For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; hence it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer. 4 Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, since there are priests who offer gifts according to the law. 5 They offer worship in a sanctuary that is a sketch and shadow of the heavenly one; for Moses, when he was about to erect the tent, was warned, "See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain." 6 ¶ But Jesus has now obtained a more excellent ministry, and to that degree he is the mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted through better promises. 7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no need to look for a second one. 8 God finds fault with them when he says: "The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah; 9 not like the covenant that I made with their ancestors, on the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; for they did not continue in my covenant, and so I had no concern for them, says the Lord. 10 This is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”
Hebrews 9:11-14 NRSV “11 But when Christ came as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation), 12 he entered once for all into the Holy Place, not with the blood of goats and calves, but with his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. 13 For if the blood of goats and bulls, with the sprinkling of the ashes of a heifer, sanctifies those who have been defiled so that their flesh is purified, 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to worship the living God!”
Hebrews 10:11-17 NRSV “11 And every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. 12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, "he sat down at the right hand of God," 13 and since then has been waiting "until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet." 14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. 15 And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying, 16 "This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds," 17 he also adds, "I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more."”

Wednesday – The Difference It Makes
Hebrews 4:16 God’s Word to the Nations “So we can go confidently to the throne of God’s kindness to receive mercy and find kindness, which will help us at the right time.”
Hebrews 4:16 COMMENTARY BY ALBERT BARNES A throne is the seat of a sovereign; a throne of grace is designed to represent a sovereign seated to dispense mercy and pardon. The illustration or comparison here may have been derived from the temple service. In that service God is represented as seated in the most holy place on the mercy-seat. The high priest approaches that seat or throne of the Divine Majesty with the blood of the atonement, to make intercession for the people, and to plead for pardon.
Hebrews 9 – see the chapter

Thursday – The Difference It Makes
Hebrews 10:19-25 CEV “19 ¶ My friends, the blood of Jesus gives us courage to enter the most holy place 20 by a new way that leads to life! And this way takes us through the curtain that is Christ himself. 21 We have a great high priest who is in charge of God’s house. 22 So let’s come near God with pure hearts and a confidence that comes from having faith. Let’s keep our hearts pure, our consciences free from evil, and our bodies washed with clean water. 23 We must hold tightly to the hope that we say is ours. After all, we can trust the one who made the agreement with us. 24 We should keep on encouraging each other to be thoughtful and to do helpful things. 25 Some people have gotten out of the habit of meeting for worship, but we must not do that. We should keep on encouraging each other, especially since you know that the day of the Lord’s coming is getting closer.”
Hebrews 10:19 COMMENTARY BY MATTHEW HENRY Our way to heaven is by a crucified Saviour; his death is to us the way of life, and to those who believe this, he will be precious…Their bodies were to be washed with pure water, alluding to the cleansings directed under the law: thus the use of water in baptism, was to remind Christians that their conduct should be pure and holy.
Hebrews 10:23 COMMENTARY BY ALBERT BARNES It is evident that those to whom he wrote were suffering persecution, Heb 12:1-29 and that there was great danger that they would apostatize.
