"RUNWAY CHURCH" DEDICATED AT GATWICK [Godwin Benjamin]

Next time you fly into Gatwick airport take a look out of the left-hand window as your plane hits the runway. The gothic style church you will see there is the latest place for worship for Seventh-day Adventists in the south of England. Affectionately called the "church beside the runway", the St Michael and All Angels church has been leased to the Horley Adventist church for a peppercorn rent of £500 for the next ten years.

The Horley group began meeting in 2001, became a company on 6 January 2007 and was organised as a church on 5 January 2008, the first church organisation overseen by the SEC President, Pastor Sam Davis. Throughout their short existence, the first elder Paul Hersey made it one of his priorities to find a permanent place of worship. While searching on the internet, Paul came across a church close to Gatwick airport which had been empty for four years. He contacted the West Sussex dioceses of the Church of England who were responsible for the church and their response was very positive.

Following discussions and much prayer the dioceses agreed that the Horley church could worship in the building. Even more remarkable was their offer that the church would be leased to the Horley church for ten years for a peppercorn rent of £500. The church began to worship at their new home in May while the legal details of the lease were being finalised and the signings took place in early June. The church was subsequently transferred to the dioceses redundant churches list and the official lease was sent to Paul Hersey. As a result of their move the church decided to add Gatwick to their name.

St Michael and All Angels is situated parallel to the end of the runway at Gatwick airport. It was designed and commissioned by the architect William Burgess (the father of gothic architecture) in 1860. It is a Grade 2 listed building and boasts some of the best stained glass windows and religious art in the country. It has two organs, one an original pipe organ, in working order. Members are hoping that this may attract an organist as currently this beautiful instrument is unused. The church's beautiful architecture means many people drop in and ask to be shown round the building. Members are hoping that this can give more potential for an Adventist witness.

Unfortunately, the church has no toilet facilities (there is a portaloo outside) and the only water on the premises is a standpipe outside in the church yard. However, there is a Travelodge Hotel across the road and the congregation have been given permission to use their toilet facilities. Planning permission has already been granted to build an extension to accommodate toilets, a kitchen and church hall. A concert has already been held to start acquiring the required funds.

Having completed all the legal formalities the church was dedicated last Sabbath, 28 June. The service was conducted by their previous pastor, Sinisa Horvat, who had been instrumental in originally planting the church and had worked with Paul in obtaining the building. There were musical items from some of the members and some words of appreciation from Paul Hersey as to how the Lord has been leading in acquiring the church and their future intention to work in the community. Godwin Benjamin presented a lectern to the church as a gift from the South England Conference which it is hoped will enhance their worship.

A warm welcome awaits all those who visit the Horley Gatwick church and if you are ever near the airport then you are invited to visit St Michael and All Angels Seventh-day Adventist Church, Church Road, Lowfield Heath Crawley, West Sussex, RH11 OPQ.

SIX ORDAINED AT NEC SESSION [Cedric Vine]

Sabbath, 28 June saw six men ordained to the Gospel Ministry at the North England Conference Session in Scarborough. Outgoing President, Pastor Egerton Francis, led the presentation of the six ordinands. The first was Yorkshire man Jeff Couzins, introduced by Pastor Steve Palmer. He entered the pastoral ministry in 1998 following a career in electronics design and software management, and the completion of his BA in Pastoral Studies at Newbold College. Jeff is married to Sandie. Together they have two adult children, Darren and Mandy, and 10 year-old Nicky and serve the Bolton district.

Next was Carlton Douglas, introduced by Pastor Jeff Nicholson. Carlton originates from south London, where he grew up and undertook his education. In 1989, he started attending Peckham Seventh-day Adventist church, where, after a year, he was baptised by Pastor Sam Davis. In 1997, Carlton accepted the call to ministry and attended Newbold College, where he met and fell in love with fellow student Patricia Dell. They were married in 1999. Carlton and Pat have one lively boy, James, and serves the Stoke-on-Trent district.

Third was Milan Gugleta. Hailing from Serbia, he was introduced by Pastor Ian Sweeney. He grew up in a Communist home, and, following a time of searching, entered the Adventist church in his hometown. In 1995, he entered the Belgrade Theological Seminary. In 1996, he met and married Michelle Simpson from the North East of England. They moved to the UK and in 2000 he entered Newbold College, where Milan completed his MA in Theological Studies. They currently serve the Leamington Spa and Worcester district. They have two young children, Natasja and Luka George.

Ghanaian-born Samuel Appiah, introduced by Pastor Rainford McIntosh as a member of the tribe of Levi (ie son of a pastor), felt called to pastoral ministry as a 10-year-old following participation in a drama based on Acts 5:1-11, the story of Ananias and Sapphira, in which he played the lead character of Peter. As a result of the play, Samuel was given the nickname 'pastor', which stuck, shaping his views and character as a child. Samuel studied at the Adventist Seminary of West Africa (ASWA) in Nigeria, now Babcock University. In 2000, he entered Newbold College to study for an MA in Pastoral Studies. He currently pastors the Bournville and Handsworth Wood African Fellowship. Samuel is married to Winifred, they have three children, Joel (8), Esmond (6), and Kelsey (8 months).

George Kumi, introduced by Dr Patrick Herbert, was born in Accra, Ghana and raised in a Presbyterian family. Due to the influence of his uncle, he became a Seventh-day Adventist. Following a period of employment with the Department of Animal Husbandry, he was baptised and studied at the Adventist Missionary College in Ghana. He then served for two years before attending West Indies College, where he completed a BA in Religion and Biblical Languages. In 1993, he completed an MA in Religion at Newbold College. He then worked as a social worker until 2005, when he took up a position as associate pastor of the Nottingham and Long Eaton district. George, with his wife Susana, currently serves the Bulwell and Long Eaton churches. They have three sons, Gideon, Emmanuel and Daniel.

Lastly, Solon Kyriacou was introduced by Pastor Geoffrey Mapiki. Solon was born in 1961 to the unusual combination of German mother and Greek Cypriot father in London. He grew up in an atheist home and became involved in left-wing politics. In 1983, he completed a BA in Philosophy at Nottingham University, after which he worked for the Derby City Council's housing authority. In 1989, he met Dee, a non-attending Adventist. Together they started to attend the Normanton church (now Derby Bethel). Following Bibles studies he was baptised in 1990. In 1999, with Dee and his two sons, Louis and Johann, Solon moved to Newbold College, where he completed a BA and MA in Pastoral Ministry. Solon currently serves the Humberside district.

Dr Daniel Duda, Ministerial Association Secretary for the Trans-European Division, addressed the ordinands, most of them former students of his, on the topic of false expectations, basing his message on seven words taken from Exodus 4:10, 'neither in the past nor even now'. Pastor Fred Mapp then led in the prayer of ordination, thanking God for the calling He has placed on the ordinands and seeking His grace to be poured out upon them in their ministry.

Pastor George Kumi responded on behalf of the ordinands by recounting the 1968 Olympic marathon in Mexico in which, following the completion of the race, the last participant, John Stephen Ahkwari of Tanzania, hobbled with his injuries around the last lap. When asked why he bothered to complete the race he responded that his country had not sent him 7,000 miles to merely start the race, but also to finish. He knew for whom he was running. Pastor Kumi drew parallels to ministry, affirming that the ordinands know their purpose, the spreading of the gospel, and are determined to finish the race they have started. He concluded by thanking all those involved in making the ordination possible and challenged the congregation to tell people that Jesus is coming soon.

A selection of photographs from the service are available in the BUC picture gallery, <www.adventistpictures.org.uk>.

ADRA BURMA UPDATE [Bert Smit, ADRA-UK Director]

Mark Castellino, ADRA-UK Programmes director, returned to Myanmar on Friday, 27 June to monitor the £357,000 project co-funded by the Department for International Development (DFID). Mark will be in Myanmar for a period of three weeks and is currently travelling into the delta area that was affected by cyclone Nargis. The DFID project is providing shelter goods and household kits for 30,000 people in the Pyinsalu Sub-township. In cooperation with the World Food Programme, ADRA is also providing food to 35,000 people in the same area. The latest report indicates that the household and tool kits have been produced and that the distribution is underway. Mark is in Myanmar now to monitor the progress of the project and provide additional support to the Emergency Response Team of ADRA Myanmar.

ADRA and World Concern have recently conducted a joint health assessment in the Pyinsalu Sub-township which highlighted key areas requiring assistance over the coming months. The assessment emphasised the need for an increasing focus on preventative health interventions, particularly in health promotion. ADRA-UK will explore possibilities to continue to help the people of Myanmar rebuild their lives in the aftermath of the natural disaster that struck.

Mark's earlier visit to Myanmar has significantly raised the awareness for the work ADRA does in the media. His work with ADRA was featured on BBC South Today (TV), BBC Radio Berkshire, Three Counties Radio and published in dozens of local newspapers. ADRA was also recently mentioned in reports highlighting the problems for humanitarian agencies working in Zimbabwe.

FIRST ADVENTIST YOUTH VOLUNTEER NHS CHAPLAIN [Claude Lombart]

"Matthew Lombart is the youngest person ever to have completed a Volunteer Lay Chaplain certificated course for the East Kent NHS Trust," stated Dr Rev Paul Kirby, Head of Spiritual Care and Services for the Trust. He was introducing over 24 adult and mature ministers and professionals in a special commissioning service in the chapel of the Franciscan Study Centre in Canterbury on Wednesday evening, 25 June 2008.

The service was conducted in a packed chapel of seasoned Anglican chaplains, Christian ministers, and lay people. Denominational leaders of churches were invited to participate and congratulate each newly authorised Volunteer Lay Chaplain. Matthew requested his uncle, Pastor Claude Lombart of the Cambridge and Bury St Edmunds churches, to accompany him and represent his church.

Dr Rev Kirby introduced Matthew and Claude to the event's preacher, the Archdeacon of Canterbury, Ven Sheila Watson. She reminded Matthew of her visit to him in hospital when he was seriously ill stating: "The fact that you have yourself experienced what it is like to be a patient will make you a better and stronger chaplain."

Twenty-year-old Matthew adds chaplaincy to the service he gives the Lord in music and preaching. He produced his first easy listening gospel music CD in 2003 then went on to become the youngest person to complete the SEC Lay Preacher's course the following year. He has helped raised over £6000 in concerts for various charities. He is a final year student of psychology at Canterbury University. He says, "My priority in life is to serve God and while I am doing it I am having fun. Moreover I like my church and want to raise its profile in the community." Matthew is certainly achieving his goal in life and to God be all the glory.

ALMOST ONE MILLION! [Audrey Balderstone]

Nine hundred and ten thousand Euros was the amazing amount of the offering collected Sabbath, 21 June at the ASI Europe Convention in Tirgu Mures, Romania. Those attending the Convention from around eighteen countries in Europe were joined by members of the Romanian churches in the area for a day in which we witnessed a miracle of faith. ASI Europe had a goal of two hundred thousand Euros for twelve projects, while the Romanian Chapter had a goal of four hundred and fifty thousand Euros for 53 projects. In the event both surpassed their goals with ASI Romania receiving sixty six thousand Euros and ASI Europe receiving two hundred and fifty thousand Euros.

The size of the offering was due in no small part to the dynamic preaching of Dr Jose Rojas, Director of the Office of Volunteer Ministries for the North American Division. Over the course of the Convention (18-21 June), Dr Rojas illustrated in compelling narrative the ways in which God showers blessings on us if we are faithful to Him. As well as being an inspiring preacher of the Word, Dr Rojas is also an accomplished musician and each of his presentations ended with either a song in which he accompanied himself on the guitar, or with a hymn which he played simultaneously on the mouth organ and guitar.

Music was a feature of the Convention, among them the close harmony of the male quartet ADORAMUS and solos by guest singer Charles Haughabrooks from USA. The 2,500 seater stadium was packed on Sabbath evening for a concert by a choir made up of young adults from all over Romania. Under the direction of Will Dula and accompanied by the combined Philharmonic Orchestras of Tirgu Mures and Cluj Napoka we thrilled to the themes of the 'old, old stories' told again in song. 'The Holy City' and 'The Lord's Prayer' ended an evening in which we were transported to the very gates of heaven.

Seminars, testimonies and even the business sessions were inspirational. Many evangelistic projects have benefited from funding and plans were shared to expand the successful 'Youth for Jesus' programme with training for young people being a priority. Audrey Balderstone of ASI-UK, who stepped down after five years as President of ASI Europe, said she was delighted to introduce the new ASI Europe President, Angel Duo from Spain. With a strong team around him Angel is committed, with the Board and members of ASI Europe to its motto of 'Sharing Christ in the Market Place.'

If you are a business person, have a profession or run a ministry then visit the ASI-UK website <www.asi-uk.org> and see how you can be part of this great organisation.

BUC EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE REPORT

The BUC Executive summer meeting is traditionally one of reports and legal meetings. The full day on Thursday, 3 July was no exception. However, in the midst of the legal and financial language came the good news of membership increases with church membership in the UK and Ireland now standing at 28,274. BUC President, Pastor Don McFarlane noted that the membership of the South England Conference alone is approaching that of the BUC just seven years ago. BUC Treasurer, Victor Pilmoor noted that the rate of tithe growth is slowing slightly, only to be expected within the current economic forecasts. The latest tithe figures are published monthly on the Treasurer's page of the BUC website, <www.adventist.org.uk>. The Stanborough Press also reported good sales and a net profit of £248,065 in 2007. Much of this is due to good sales links in Africa and a close cooperation with the Review and Herald in the USA.
