Sunday shopping banned in Croatia

Tue Jul 15, 10:54 AM ET

ZAGREB, Croatia - The Croatian parliament has passed a law forcing shops to close on Sundays in a concession to the Roman Catholic church.

The church has campaigned for years for Sundays to be devoted to family or Mass in Croatia, which is almost 90 percent Roman Catholic. But Croatians have begun spending weekends in shopping malls that have flourished across the country in the past few years and remain open seven days a week.

The law adopted Tuesday and goes into effect Jan. 1. It allows Sunday shopping over the summer and Christmas holidays.

The law also allows stores in gas, bus and train stations to open on Sundays year-round, along with those in hospitals. Bakeries, newsstands and flower shops are also exempt from the ban.

Hey Norman!

Yes, it could be very significant, I think. We know, of course, that the Pope has been urging Europe to adopt Sunday laws, and the reason that is given is the welfare of the working class who need a day for family and church. It sounds so beneficial to everyone. Who could oppose such a law?

With all those exemptions I imagine some shop owners will get creative in their shop names and products.

There are powerful groups working for similar laws here in the U.S.

Amelia - -

I used to live in an area where automobile dealerships could not sell cars on Sunday, so one enterprising dealership used to sell a loaf of bread for several thousand dollars, along with a free car.

So, we have the "blue laws" here in SC. What's new? Nothing!

What is (or certainly could be) significant is that these are just the kind of laws that the popes (especially John Paul II) have campaigned for and at least one has written about in an encyclical. It could be a precedent for the rest of Europe to follow, particularly if they experience crisis. If it works well there, it could be tried elsewhere. Ellen White has said that Sunday laws will come in in a way that will seem like a wonderful idea. This is exactly how this law looks. How could anyone who loves humanity oppose such a law?

HEY ROBERT

most states have blue laws or sunday laws on the books.

that is not the point here.

when things get hard all the politians have to do is
to enforce those laws.
which they will do it is just a matter of time
