Yes, she was talking about sex...
The last sentence reflects the "medical" thinking of her era that sex drained a man of his life force. She and those promoting this line of thinking believed that sex was for procreation only.

Oh wait, if being a 'brute' means still enjoying sex after all the children are conceived, can I change my answer?  Gotta remember that this was written prior to easy access to birth control, so there were definite issues of the number of children a woman had...

I think we also need to remember that in earlier times women were taught to basically "grin and bear it" when the husband wanted sex. There was no joy to be had on the womans part. So men would indeed be considered brutes for wanting something that woman looked upon as a chore.
