NEWBOLD GRADUATION 2008 [Helen Pearson, PRO Newbold College/BUC News]

Two UK pastors were among the graduates at this year's Award Ceremony on Sunday, 6 July. The Scottish Mission offered congratulations to Pastor Marcel Ghioalda who completed his MA in Theology with an emphasis in Youth Ministry. Marcel completed his MA part-time alongside his work as the Dundee pastor and Scottish Mission Youth sponsor. "It was an experience in perseverance," he told BUC News this week, "but definitely worthwhile." With an emphasis in Youth Ministry it gave him opportunity to study at various European colleges meeting with other Youth leaders and being taught by experts in Youth Ministry from across the world. Pastor Vicentiu Dranca of the Bath, Croscombe and Bristol Lodge Causeway churches received an MA in Pastoral Theology. He states that the programme was "an eye opener into practical ministry." Having already studied for his Bachelor of Divinity at Newbold he found that the MA allowed him to go deeper. Asked if it was making a difference to his current ministry he replied, "I have learned the comparison between ministry in the beginning of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and how it needs to be contextualised in today's contemporary needs.

Marcel and Vicentiu were among 56 graduates from 31 countries, 6 of them UK nationals. As the rain poured down and Newbold Church Centre filled to capacity, Principal David Penner delivered his final public address to the 2008 graduates along with teachers, families, friends and well-wishers. As speaker for the annual Awards Ceremony, his parting concern was to share his thoughts as a student and teacher of leadership with the 2008 graduates. "All of you will, at some time, be placed in a position of leadership," he said.

From the 8000 secular theories of leadership, Dr Penner chose five principles with Biblical bases to pass on: "Forget about trying to be a hero. Don't worry about your own abilities – God chooses for His purposes, not your abilities. Don't be proud about your own humility but 'do the needful'." Finally, when everything goes wrong, remember the Psalmist's simple word, "But" as it is used in Psalm 31: 'For I hear the slander of many; there is terror on every side... But I trust in you, O Lord.'

Inevitably, this concluding event of the school year brought reflections on Dr Penner's own leadership style while carrying out the role of principal. In bidding him farewell, Vice-Principal, Dr Mike Pearson, described Dr Penner's courteous and gentle style of leadership in this extremely arduous and complex job, his deep love of the Newbold tradition, his enjoyment of student company, and his open door to all comers.

Among the well-wishers honoured in the ceremony were Newbold graduates from a different era who came with their spouses to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their graduation in 1958. Pastor Martin Anthony, President of the 1958 Graduation Class and subsequently minister and administrator in the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the British Union Conference and Trans-European Division said: "This morning's Graduation Ceremony was a highlight of the weekend for me. I watched the graduates and I thought, 'What a super bunch! They are just exactly like we were 50 years ago. What a great heritage!'" More details and pictures are available at <www.newbold.ac.uk>.

IRISH MISSION VOLUNTEERS RETURN AFTER SUCCESSFUL MISSION TRIP [Stephen Wilson]

By early Monday morning, 7 July all 10 Irish Mission volunteers were back home with their families after competing the first phase of the renovation of a village school in Kloc, Southern Albania. During the previous two weeks the group, along with local volunteers, removed the roof, plaster and windows of the four classroom school along with repairing damaged walling and installing the framework for the wiring. It was heavy work in the humid conditions and there were many scratches and scraps along the way. Praise God that the entire group were kept safe as they worked with heavy logs containing hundreds of tiny nails as they were removed from crumbling brick walls. ADRA Ireland is the primary donor for this €65,000 renovation project.

The Irish group represented 6 nationalities and discovered that around the dinner table were 21 languages. The two weeks were a wonderful experience for all involved. On the final day the volunteers had a chance to share their testimony with the local church. David Muldrew told of his joy of being present. This was his first mission trip and he had been waiting until his retirement last year for an opportunity like this. Others told of how they were blessed with funding as they stepped out in faith and decided to come to Albania.

However this trip was not simply to rebuild a school, it was also to make friendships and bring the love of Jesus to the village. Many of the villages visited the site and through hand gestures and hugs shared their thankfulness for the support of the Adventist Church and ADRA for their village. On the final evening before fireworks were set off to close the Sabbath the village Elder, along with the Mayor of the commune, prayed with the Irish volunteers holding hands together in a circle.

The volunteers stayed in the local Adventist church in the nearby city of Korca. In the city each evening the Irish group supported the local church in distributing materials on the Adventist Health Message. This was followed up by Pastor Stephen Wilson and Lindita Vani-Wilson sharing two seminars on health, family relationships and forgiveness. Over 150 visitors attended these meetings which closed with the story of Jesus' final words on the cross "It is finished". The crowd listened intently as they were told that because of the forgiveness of Jesus our lives can be transformed. The local church pastor was very excited to meet so many new contacts and to start a relationship with these people who had now so many questions from the Bible.

School reopens on 15 September. With the work of the local community and a group of young people coming from Croatia, the work will be completed for this school in Kloc. For more on this story see the YouTube video: <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWMTdRh0qnA>.

OPENING OF FRONTLINE DEBT AND BENEFIT ADVICE CENTRE IN CALMORE
[Rosemary Lethbridge]

Debt is an ever-increasing problem that affects the lives of many at some time or another. Experts predict that we are heading into a recession and that the problem will only get worse. Recognising that people in debt or struggling on benefits often feel very alone and need help and assistance to relieve the pressure The Watering Hole, a church plant in Hampshire, wanted to do something about it.

The Watering Hole decided to partner with The Frontline Project and train volunteer advisors to provide debt and benefit advice. The Frontline Project has been providing debt and benefit advice across the south since it was founded on the Isle of Wight 20 years ago.

The debt centre provides free, independent, confidential and competent advice to anyone needing help regarding their financial situation. Genuinely caring and working for the good of the community has made a big impression on local people. Some have already offered their help in various ways, others now invite their friends to come to things that they enjoy and local government agencies are starting to work with the church plant so that together we can make a difference.

In several books of Deuteronomy and Leviticus God's people are instructed on ways to make life easier for people struggling with debt. When Jesus walked this earth His presence, His teaching and miracles brought hope and healing to many. In 2008 there are still people who are prisoners of the evil one who need the help that the church working in Jesus' name can bring.

SCOTTISH MISSION FAMILY CAMP – KILBERRY [Clifford Herman, Scottish Mission Family Ministries Sponsor]

The weather forecast for the week was 'dreich'. (A Scottish word for dull, overcast, miserable and rainy weather – pronounced 'dreegh'). However, the spirits of the attendees at the Scottish Mission Family Camp were optimistic, looking forward to a relaxing, yet spirit-filled week together.

This annual event, led by the Mission's Family Ministries Sponsors, is held on the Cowal Peninsula, in the picturesque South West of Scotland. The remote and friendly Christian Port Ban Holiday Park, with its outstanding views of the islands of Jura and Islay, welcomed families from almost every church in the Mission – and some from beyond. This year 19 families, around 55 individuals, arrived on Friday 27 June and stayed until Friday 4 July.

Family Camp usually includes craft activities for children, sport sessions for everyone - which always are joined by other visitors to the caravan park; the odd golf putting competition; a praise evening for Saturday vespers; a fun auction – of which the proceeds go to the caravan park for their generosity and friendliness; a talent evening; camp fires and a trip to the beautiful nearby town of Tarbert.

Pastor Wayne Erasmus from the Weston-Super-Mare and Taunton districts in the South England Conference led the evening worship sessions. His inspirational thoughts on the seven miracles in the Gospel of John, along with innovative prayer and praise sessions led by Mrs Karin Edwards and good singing by the whole group, allowed us to reflectively ponder the personal applications these miracles have to our daily lives.

The forecast for the week happened to be correct, and was indeed 'dreich'. However, what makes every Scottish Mission Family Camp amazing and memorable is always the involvement of everyone, who attends. Young and old get involved, contribute and always find opportunities to bless someone else. A selection of photos from the event are available on the BUC picture gallery: <www.adventist.org.uk>.

ASSURANCE OF SALVATION AT CARDIFF [John Surridge, Welsh Mission President]

"The Assurance of Salvation" was the theme for a special one day Bible Conference held at the Cardiff Seventh-day Adventist Church on Sabbath, 19 July. Guest speakers were BUC President Pastor Don McFarlane and Pastor Ivan Milanov. He is currently researching the book of Daniel for his PhD thesis at Newbold College. An estimated 170 people came from all over South Wales, filling the church to capacity.

Although Pastor Milanov was not previously known to most of those in the congregation, they soon warmed to him as he spoke on the theme, "Let the Justice be Done" in the first morning session. Starting with the Old Testament he explained the close relationship between the Hebrew concepts of 'righteousness' and 'justice', and showed how a misunderstanding of God's nature can come from the Greek view of justice as 'punishment'. In contrast the biblical view of justice and righteousness includes victory, covenant and deliverance.

In the Divine Service Pastor McFarlane spoke on, "A Matter of Holiness". Starting from Revelation 22:11 and the characteristics of those who will be saved, he reminded the congregation that holiness is vitally important for our salvation. However, he then went on to show that there are actually three types of holiness: generic holiness, obtained by association; personal holiness, a process of maturing obtained by walking with Christ; and God's holiness, which can only be received as a gift, through faith. Important as the first two are, it is only the last one of these that can save us.

This theme was developed further in the afternoon by Pastor Milanov, who asked the question, "Once Saved Always Saved?" Sadly, Pastor Milanov pointed out, not all Seventh-day Adventists have the assurance of salvation - or at least many of them feel uncomfortable expressing their assurance. Salvation though, has three components: past, present and future. Now we are saved from the power of sin, but not the presence of sin. It is a matter of both 'moment' and 'process', but all the time it is a 'relationship' with Jesus.

The day concluded with numerous practical illustrations of what "The Assurance of Salvation" means in day-to-day life. "Those who are saved will produce good works," said Pastor Milanov. They will do good, not out of guilt or the desire for a reward, but simply because it is good.

Pastor McFarlane drew on his long experience of pastoral and administrative ministry to illustrate how we should present the gospel to people today. "Condemnation destroys relationships," he said. However, responding to questions on church discipline and standards he explained that there are some cases where discipline is still necessary. "The people we need to discipline are the rebellious, the haughty and the hypocritical," he said, "but not those who are struggling. We need to be an encouraging and affirming church, where sinners can come and know that they will not be condemned. The highest standard of the church is the standard of love."

Many people worked hard to make the Bible Conference a success. Overall coordinator was the local pastor, Jan McKenzie, but he was assisted by the Cardiff elders, deacons, musicians and singers, and caterers.

Those familiar with the Cardiff church were pleasantly surprised by the recent facelift that the building has received. New railings and paint in the car park have secured and brightened up the rear of the church. A great deal of cleaning and tidying by members during a recent workday has much improved the interior as well.

Around fifty photos from the day can be seen in the gallery section of the Welsh Mission website at: <www.adventistwales.org>.

THE WIMBLEDON BETTER HEALTH FAIR - MINISTRY BEYOND WORDS [Sam Neves]

"Last Sunday was amazing." I've heard that statement so many times this week. The Health Fair idea came through Dr Adam Ibrahim who has recently joined the Wimbledon International Seventh-day Adventist Church. By Sunday, 20 July at least a third of the church family was ministering in one way or another. That was the first amazing part of the day - seeing everyone ministering with the Spiritual Gifts God had given them.

The second amazing thing was how people were greeted with balloons on the streets surrounding the church and led all the way to the reception desk, even if that meant walking for a few minutes. This drew the attention of many families that live around the church as well as shoppers on the High Street.

The third amazing thing was the reaction from the community - all the 91 visitors that met us for the first time. A lady mentioned that she passes the church all the time and has always wanted to join the singing, but wouldn't come to a church she doesn't know. Next Sabbath we hope to greet her along with her mother. A young man who had arrived from Croatia agreed to enrol on a 'stop smoking' course. Another 3 homeless men were fed and encouraged by all members who saw beyond the dishevelled appearance. Many elderly ladies from the neighbourhood mentioned that they felt rejuvenated through the day, especially with the Pilates sessions.

Beyond these repeated stories of people who were touched, one last person will be in our prayers for some time. He was an Englishman who must be in his 60s. After spending the whole day with us, he was the last to enter the prize draw and we were all glad when he actually won first prize! At this stage we had developed a great relationship with him. We also hope that the blender and book he has received will let him somehow remember that we are here every week. We pray that not only him, but all the other 90+ people, will come back sometime soon. We are all eagerly awaiting their return so that we will once again have the golden opportunity of being used by God to minister to His children, hopefully beyond words.

A selection of photos from the event are available on the BUC picture gallery: <www.adventist.org.uk>.

LEE VALLEY GROWS UNDER "THE POWER OF HIS WORD" [Nana Sifa Twum]

It was a glorious and exciting Sabbath afternoon for members of the Lee Valley Seventh-day Adventist Church in North London, and also a joy for dozens of visitors, mainly friends and relations of 24 new believers who chose to take up the Cross of the Saviour. These were the first fruits of a well attended evangelistic campaign, the first ever by the church since its organisation in October 2006.

The four-week campaign had attracted unprecedented attendance at the young church but the atmosphere at the church on Sabbath 7 June was described by members as unparalleled in terms of attendance, preparation, worship and a powerful and inspirational sermon which propelled many from the congregation to respond to an altar-call.

The campaign, under the theme, "The Power of His Word" was conducted by a Ghanaian international evangelist, Dr Paul Adu Sampah. Attended by over 200 visitors, 60 of them had already been engaged in a continuous Bible study programme with the church.

Mrs Mercy Opoku-Agyeman, the first female candidate to be baptised, observed that though it had been a struggle to follow her husband who had been baptised into fellowship about a year ago, the invitation to accept the Lord's call was so intense nothing could stop her from getting baptized. "It was a very enthused experience; I wish everyone feels the way I feel".

Pastor Owusu Boateng stated, "The campaign was a huge success and the church will make it an annual affair to win more souls for the Kingdom."

SHROPSHIRE DAY OF FELLOWSHIP [Clyde Moore]

Members of Shrewsbury, Telford and Wrexham churches, all part of the Welsh Mission, under the leadership of district minister Pastor Clyde R Moore, came together for the inaugural Shropshire Day of Fellowship on Sabbath, 5 July. Despite the intermittent showers and the local Abbey's annual fair, the sanctuary was almost full. Anette Moore led out in the Children's Sabbath School, whilst the adults were led in a study of Paul by Shrewsbury's first elder, Peter Bayliss. It was engaging and members enthusiastically participated.

The Tuckley Twins from Northampton had kindly accepted the invitation to minister in song which they did to the glory of God. Pastor Moore, also rendered a solo entitled "A Sinner Saved by Grace." Anette Moore caused the congregation to gasp as she created a visual representation of what Satan had done to God's creation. Each child was given a personal model to take away, some adults also asked for their own copy!

Evangelist Costa Vaggas took his theme for the day as simply "Hero". Basing his sermon on 2 Corinthians 5:21 he reminded us sincerely that we need to focus on Jesus Christ who is our true hero.

Following a picnic fellowship lunch for which the sun came out and children and adults alike were able to stretch their legs, we commenced the afternoon elder ordination of Elva Brooks, first elder of the Telford Seventh-day Adventist church. The day concluded with a fellowship supper and vespers at her home.

MALAYALAM CHURCH PLANT IN WATFORD [O P Chackochen]

Sabbath, 5 July saw the inaugural meeting of the newest language church in the UK. About seventy Malayalam-speaking Seventh-day Adventists from the state of Kerala, India gathered to worship at the Stanborough Secondary School in Watford. It was planned and organised by John Varghese. Joy Paul and Andrew Chackochen taught the Sabbath School, Pastor O P Chackochen delivered the message for the Divine Service and Raju and Stella George provided a sumptuous lunch. The primary purpose of the group is to attract the hundreds of Malayalam-speaking people living in and around Watford where an outreach programme among the Malayalam-speaking community has been going on for the last two years. The group plans to meet on the first Sabbath of every month at Stanborough Secondary School. FREQUENCY CHANGE FOR HOPE CHANNEL

Hope Channel satellite broadcasts are changing frequency this month. This is due to a reallocation of frequencies by the owners of the Hotbird Satellite and is beyond the control and wish of Hope Channel Europe. To ensure continuity of programming you will need to retune your receiver to 11585 GHZ as soon as possible. While each make of receiver will work slightly differently, here is the basic principle for retuning:

1. Press Menu on handset
2. Select Installation
3. Select Satellite Setup (Hotbird 13.0E should already be selected)
4. Select Scan choose Free or FTA (free to air) press OK to scan
5. After scan is complete, exit menu (save results if prompted)
6. Scroll through saved channels to find Hope Channel and add to favourites.

The re-scan should have picked up the Hope Channel in its new location automatically. This process may vary according to which receiver you have. Please refer to your receiver manual for guidance. A more detailed version of this information along with an instructional video is available on the UK-Hope TV website, <www.hopetv.org.uk>. The old frequency will switch off in August.

We apologise for the slight inconvenience this will cause and hope that it will not distract from your viewing pleasure. If you are referring the retuning to a technician they will want the following information: EutelSat-Hotbird 130E, Frequency: 11585 GHZ. Polarization: Vertical. Symbol rate: 27.5MB. FEC ¾.

LATEST MESSENGER ONLINE

The latest edition of the Messenger, the official journal of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the UK and Ireland, can now be found online at <www.adventistnews.org.uk/messenger>. With extensive reporting of the North England Conference Session, this edition also asks, "Is it appropriate to lie?", "What makes Jesus visible?" and debates the kind of anchor we need as Adventist Christians.

MISSIONARY WORKER AND MESSENGER ONLINE

Pastor Brian Phillips has drawn attention to the wealth of historical information now available on the General Conference archives. In addition to the British "Messenger Magazine" and its predecessor, "The Missionary Worker", there are a vast array of books, periodicals and other resources. I browsed through "The Missionary Magazine" for January, 1898 and was fascinated to find out what the church was doing in Jamaica, the Bahamas and Cuba at that time. The magazines are archived in pdf or DJVU format (both available free with links from the archives). Appropriate links to the British content have been placed on the Messenger page of the BUC website, <www.adventist.org.uk>.

There really isn't a lot to do and you will have a lot of free time. We are a warm family and once in you would be treated as one of the family. Jemma is 3 and Jude is 15 months. They're lovely kids and a whole lot of fun. Jemma will be starting Nursery in September and she also does ballet and Kindermusiek. Jude has just started walking and loves walks to the park and the outdoors. Hartley works in London and Liesl is a stay at home mum studying part-time from September so will need some help with the kids (probably 2-3 hours a day). We have a lovely home in Burgess Hill which is only a 20 minute train journey to Brighton and an hour train journey to London. For further information, please contact: Liesl on 07876564135 or Hartley on 07884234069 or email: <liesl.holtzhauzen@gmail.com>.
