Club Adventist
Welcome with open arms fellow believers who don’t see things the way you do.
And don’t jump all over them every time they do or say something you don’t agree with
– even when it seems that they are strong on opinions but weak in the faith department.
Remember, they have their own history to deal with. Treat them gently. Romans 14.1: The Message

LARGEST ATTENDANCE EVER AT BUC CAMPOREE [Catherine Boldeau/Kennedy Kundan]

"BUC Camporee 2008" officially opened its doors on Sunday, 27 July with nearly 1,200 campers in attendance. With pomp and ceremony akin to that of the army, the drum core from the Holloway church accompanied the drilling and marching of the 60 clubs from across the UK and Ireland. Giving an international flavour guest clubs from Germany, Spain and France also joined the event.

Present at the opening ceremony was the Mayor of Chelmsford, Councillor Tom Willis, accompanied by the Mayoress, his wife, Mrs Jane Willis. The Mayor commended the leaders of the church for organizing an event that "keeps children off the streets" and trains them in "good moral values". He was presented with a special gift and his wife with a beautiful bouquet of lilies. Lilies were also given to Mrs Rowena Davis and Mrs Jennifer Sweeney who accompanied their husbands, Sam Davis (SEC President) and Ian Sweeney (NEC President). Using the Word of God as their guide, and with much humour and style, they both welcomed their respective campers to the event. David Neal, (Irish Mission President) and camper, also welcomed the Irish Pathfinders to the campsite.

With dignity and grace Don McFarlane, President of the BUC, sponsors of the event, also welcomed the campers. He received the warmest ovation when he asked the campers, some who had been standing on ceremony for at least 40 minutes, to 'please sit'. Pastor McFarlane congratulated Pastor Des Boldeau, BUC Youth Ministries director and his team for the organisation of this "tremendous event".

Pathfinders are now enjoying a week packed with over 30 activities, including a very popular arial runway across a lake, crafts, abseiling and pioneering as well as trips offsite and plenty of fun. During the week we have been blessed by the ministry of Pastor A J Grant, an Indian from Canada, who lives and works in Australia. Pastor AJ's messages are full of humour and pathos, but with a real spiritual heart. An alter call on the second evening led to 100 young people making a commitment. So far 10 of them have asked for baptism this coming Sabbath morning.

Accompanying and prior to the sermon each evening is a "soap opera" entitled SOS, written and directed by Kay Rodney who is a drama teacher and one of the camporee staff. The soap depicts the journey of two young men, Jez and Tom and their respective choices.

Pastor Boldeau says, "Planning has been stressful, but it is so gratifying to see the event come to fruition. But the biggest blessing is the ten young people who want to give their hearts to Jesus Christ. This makes all the hard work and the long nights worthwhile".

A selection of 200 photos from the Camporee are available on the BUC picture gallery: <www.adventist.org.uk>.

Please note: With such a large camp there is limited extra capacity on the camp site. Only day visitors with pre-booked Sabbath tickets will be allowed on site on Sabbath.

SECOND DFID PROJECT FOR MYANMAR

ADRA-UK has secured an additional project funded by DFID (The Department for International Development,) to help improve access to clean water in the cyclone Nargis hit delta in Myanmar (Burma). The project, valued at £65,291, is now restoring access to clean water by desalinating 106 reservoirs (or 'ponds') that locals have been using for rainwater collection.

Returning from his second trip to the region since the disaster, ADRA-UK Programmes director, Mark Castellino was able to visit the Labutta Township, one of the areas worst affected by the cyclone, and the centre of ADRA's response to this disaster. "It was extremely good to be able to meet with people who are benefiting from our first DFID co-funded project," he states. "I met families who had lost all their personal belongings, and looking inside their homes realised that the household kits provided by ADRA were really the only possessions they now had." These packs include basic cooking utensils, blankets, soap and clothing. Mark was moved. "When you see this you begin to realise the extent of the devastation to people's lives and you also recognise how important the items that we have been able to provide really are."

While in Labutta, and more specifically in the Pyinsalu Sub-township, Mark was able to see for himself the real challenges facing people as they continue to rebuild their lives. One such challenge is access to clean drinking water. In the aftermath of the cyclone all these reservoirs were contaminated with salt water, debris, and animal and human remains, making the ponds unusable. This new DFID funded project targets a total of 65,000 people covering approximately 16,250 households who live in the area. This is where ADRA has focused its integrative package of goods and services for the communities hardest hit by the cyclone.

ADRA is doing a lot to assist people in this area, with water purification units, distributing water containers and cleaning wells. Mark says, "the most important thing at the moment, as we are still in the monsoon season, is to address the need to collect and store rainwater to use for drinking during the dry season, set to commence in October." This is why this new grant from DFID, and their second to ADRA-UK for this relief effort, is so crucial. There is a window of opportunity over the next three weeks to clean as many water reservoirs/ponds as possible so that they can refill with rainwater and provide drinking water to thousands of people. On his return from the front-line Mark reflects, "It's gratifying to see our team of dedicated staff working together with communities to clean and restore these ponds, and thereby give hope for the future to many people."

There are 417 reservoirs or ponds with flat bottoms averaging 2 - 7 feet in depth in the sub-township. This includes one hundred that measure 25-acre in size; one hundred that measure 1-acre in size; and one that measures 18 acres in size. Others were dug by villagers and are varying in size and shape.

The project came about after discussions between DFID representatives and Mark Castellino, in Yangon, Myanmar.

A SHELTER FOR YOU [Maroria Oroko, Yvonne Bauwens & Karl Da Silva]

"The work was long and hard," states Karl, part of the Scottish Mission Project to Romania. However, he came back satisfied. "I praise God for each ounce of strength that He has given us to accomplish more than we thought possible in the little time that we had."

Between 7 - 20 July the Scottish Mission Youth department organized a volunteer trip to Zarenesti, Romania, in order to assist with the building of three low cost homes enclosed in one building, which will house three street families, and to run a children's Bible Vacation Programme within two housing blocks.

Karl states, "When we first got to the building site, we found a skeleton of a house, the bare bone structure of a building. The outside plywood walls, inside main beams, roof structure and basic outside tiling was what met us. During the two weeks (7 full working days), we put up inside supporting beams, installed windows and doors in all three houses, insulated the inside and outside walls, put up the inside walls of the rooms, reinforced and covered the ceiling, put up a fence around the parameter of the building, and completed the roof tiling."

Another Scottish team member, Yvonne, worked within the Vacation Bible School: "It was such an inspiring trip and a real eye-opener for me," she says. "Whilst the building work was going on, another team ran the children's holiday Bible club in the afternoons. I was mainly involved with the club. Each day, we based our activities around Bible characters including David and Goliath, baby Moses, Esther, Joseph and Daniel. Having safely brought my guitar over on the plane, I was able to play for the children as we taught them songs such as 'This little light of mine', 'The Creation Song' and their all time favourite, 'With Jesus in the Vessel,' which they sang perfectly both in Romanian and English!

There were just under fifty children ranging from age 3-17 years attending the Bible club. On the second Sabbath, we went to a church in a nearby town called Bran. Throughout the week, we had put together a programme involving some of the children from the club. On the Sabbath morning, the children sang songs and quoted memorized Bible texts about the characters they had been learning about at the club. For some of these children, it was the first time they had been to church. As part of the service, some of the young people from our team did a little skit about the parable of the wedding banquet from Matthew 22:1-14. Having collected and written words of encouragement on some pebbles, we gave each child a basket of pebbles to hand out to the congregation. Each person received a stone. The one thing I noticed in particular from working at the club was how eager all the children were to learn about God."

The 12 from Scotland were far from alone in their endeavour to show God's love to the people of Zarenesti. The local church, young and old alike, joined forces with the team. Zarnesti is a small village church. They offered their sanctuary as a dormitory for two weeks and two female members cooked for the team. Bran, a larger church, and Brashov, a city church, encouraged their young people to come and help; and they did! Others travelled all the way from Bucharest to take part, having worked with the Scottish team in previous projects. Yvonne reflects, "It was a great blessing to meet and work with such a varied group whose main common ground was a passion for God's work." Together, this made a team of about thirty, many of them joining the Scottish team in their lodgings - making for a warm, family atmosphere.

Though spending all day lifting, drilling, nailing, insulating, perspiring, teaching and eating together (and negotiating priority in the shower queue), the most central and uplifting activity that the team got together for was undoubtedly to praise God. Every morning at 8 am and every evening at 9 pm they sat in a big circle to sing songs, pray and share a devotional thought. "We all took it in turns to prepare the devotional," Maroria says. "At each prayer time, the floor was opened not just for requests but also for one of the number to step in the centre and be prayed for personally by everyone. That was truly special." Also special was the praise, lead skilfully by the two instrumentalists, Karl and Yvonne. "No one ever stopped praising for the whole two weeks - no matter what they were doing!" Maroria added. "In this way, the two weeks became so much more than the altruistic purposes we came to effect: it was amazing to watch our friends burst forwards in faith, some of whom did not come with any to begin with!" God be praised for the project, which not only touched the lives of the locals, but very much those of the participants too.

GLASGOW CELEBRATES UNITY IN DIVERSITY [John Wilby]

"What's colourful, comes in nearly thirty varieties and speaks volumes for the Gospel message?" Those present at Glasgow church's International and Visitors' Day on Sabbath, 26 July found the answer in a packed programme of study, worship, praise and fellowship.

A common theme emerged. Martin Pearson's imaginative presentation of the week's study of Jesus, Pastor Clifford Herman's sermon on the divine origins of cultural diversity and the range of national narratives and songs, reminded us of God's purpose for the whole of mankind and how individual spiritual gifts can be brought to bear in His service.

The day was not without its humour - all with underlying messages. It ranged from claims and counter claims about which country was "at the heart of Africa" to an "Arab visitor" claiming our common origins from the seed of Abraham who was quickly unmasked as the Church Clerk!

The adage that "armies march on their stomachs" was not neglected. The Christian soldiers present were treated to a multi-cultural fellowship lunch, further enhancing the day's palpable "feel good" atmosphere. As one member from the white British community observed, "The day exemplified the global reach of our passion for Jesus Christ".

Wonderful to read about the great attendance, and I was really happy to see that there are participants from Germany, Spain, and France as well. Good to see the beautiful fellowship they're all having. I'm praying that God will bless those churches and conferences. Thanks so much for posting this. I probably wouldn't have known otherwise. One of the great benefits of the Forum.
