SALVATION AND SERVICE AT BUC CAMPOREE [Catherine Anthony Boldeau/Andrew Leonce/BUC News]

Salvation and Service were two key elements of the British Union Conference Camporee at Skreens Park last week, 27 July - 3 August. The title "Serve our Saviour" was evident in activities throughout the week.

Throughout the week, AJ Grant, visiting guest speaker for the event, challenged the young people to throw out the "junk in their trunks", stop listening to the "hissing of the snake" and give their all to Jesus Christ. He certainly got through to one teenage boy who told BUC News, "The speaker was great. Usually people preach and they go on for hours but we don't understand. He spoke to us in a way that we could understand." Each evening he made an appeal with "somebody needs to come to Jesus". Young people from all over the British Isles as well as international clubs from Germany, Spain and France came to the altar to surrender their lives to the Lord. This resulted in a Sabbath morning baptismal service where nineteen young people were entered into the fellowship of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Pastors Nathan Stickland, SEC Pathfinder director and AJ Grant, immersed the candidates. Parents, family and friends of the candidates were also present to witness these young people take their stand for Jesus. Talking from Scotland, Steve Logan, father of one of the candidates states, "My lasting memory will be driving 980 miles in 36 hours with a big silly grin on my face to get a soaking wet hug from my daughter." Pastor Trevor Thomas, NEC Pathfinder director, who lead out in the baptismal service said, "It fills my heart with joy to see youth, and especially Pathfinders make their decision of faith".

Service is an essential part of the Pathfinder movement and the young people and volunteer staff played an active part in displaying the ethos of the Seventh-day Adventist Church's commitment to service. During the week three visits were made to Care Homes in Chelmsford under the leadership of Roz Parsons, from the Walthamstow church. Not only did the young people sing for the senior folks, but they delivered baskets of "goodies", beautifully packaged for them.

Market Day was held on Friday, where each club was encouraged to sell items to raise funds. £1612.00 was raised for Little Haven Children's Hospice in Chelmsford. A cheque for these monies was given to a representative of the organisation by Victor Pilmoor, BUC Treasurer.

In collaboration with Skreens Park Management, the BUC Pathfinder director was invited to do a community project that would leave a lasting impact on the site while reflecting the Adventist ethos. It was agreed that as Skreens Park is in a conservation area that, as part of the Camporee, volunteers construct a butterfly garden. The area that was allotted centred around a 600-year-old tree, one of the oldest in the British Isles, that had been struck by lightening and had burned for nearly 17 hours. Despite the trauma, it was still alive, but overgrown with weeds and stinging nettles. With concerted efforts from several of the Camporee volunteer staff, the butterfly garden was started and is now called "The Wayne Hill Memorial Butterfly Garden". Wayne was an avid Master Guide, SEC Area Co-ordinator and a member of the Chelmsford church. He passed away a few years ago after a battle with cancer. Jo, his wife and his daughter, Hayley were present at the closing ceremony at Camporee to pick up Wayne's award for services to Pathfinders.

In addition to the late Wayne Hill, awards for service beyond and above the call of duty were given to Millie Williams, Pam and Paul Catchpole, Pat and Terry Dyckhoff, Valerie Clarke-Eccles, Roz Parsons, Pastor Mike Toy, Warren O'Hara, Veronica Roberts, Graham Harvey and Jason Edwards (SEC); Len Stewart, Alec Simon, Dr Andrew West, Ken Burt (NEC) and Pastor Eglan Brooks (BUC). In absentia awards were allotted for Jon Meredith (Welsh Mission); Mike Rossiter (former NEC Pathfinder director) and Trevor and Cynthia Harewood (SEC). Pastor Boldeau commented on the fact that these committed individuals were not only known to him in his time as director, but were also recommended by Pastor Paul Tompkins, TED Youth Ministries director. Pastor Boldeau emphasised to the campers, "without their time and commitment and dedication, planning Camporee would be much harder".

That time and commitment paid off for the campers. A 15-year-old camper told BUC News, "We had a really good week. We've made lots of friends and enjoyed the activities especially the water sports." Another one said, "The speaker was fantastic, he spoke to us on our level." A man of experience at Camporees, Pastor David Neal, Irish Mission President spoke on behalf of the Irish contingent: "It was the best Camporee I have ever attended. It was well organised, the evening and morning programmes were spiritually uplifting and the activities were extremely enjoyable".

Pastor Des Boldeau would like to thank the members of the planning committee for their dedication in service. He would also like to offer his heartfelt thanks to all the members of staff, including some who gave up nearly two weeks of work to be on site. He would especially like to thank Natalie, his secretary, for all of her hard work. His thanks also goes to all the ministers and workers who visited during the week and to all the club leaders for attending with the children.

Back in the office with a mountain of post-camporee paperwork he told BUC News, "It was a crazy time, many of the staff did not get to bed until the early hours of the morning. One night when the toilets were blocked, several of us, did not get to bed until 3.00 am. Despite the lack of sleep, the planning, the meetings, the running around, I thank God that there were no serious incidents of any nature. I would also like to thank God for the 19 young people who were baptised. Camporee is all about the children and I'm glad that they enjoyed it".

[Baptismal candidates: Derrano Green (Brixton), Nokuthabo Moyo (Bristol), Sithabile Bafanah (Cambridge), Darran Close (Chelmsford), Sachcadena Simone Walker (Croydon), Hadassah Holder (Holloway), Marcus Rodney (Ilford), Joel Rodney (Ilford), Stefan Cudjoe (Ilford), Amarah Mitchell (Peckham), Hawa Vandi (Reading Whitley), Leah Thelma Chitiyo (Bournville), Kelly Manungo (Bourneville), Winston [Junior] Chirambo (Camp Hill), Lydia Smith (Camp Hill), Danielle Fyffe (Camp Hill), Tino Chiguma (Leeds), Seanee Marie Tangonan Bennett (Scottish Mission), Jennifer Grace Logan (Scottish Mission).

Additional photos from the Camporee are now available in the BUC picture gallery, <www.adventistpictures.org.uk>. A video report of the camporee will be available towards the end of August.

CORAL ISLAND CHALLENGE [John Walton]

In one fell swoop five of Dundee church's young people have accepted the challenge of spending a year as volunteers on the remote Pacific coral islands of Palau and Yap. Mark and Konrad are on their way to work in Palau Mission Academy. Emese, Adam and Efraim are setting out for the Yap Seventh-day Adventist School.

In the dedication service held in the Dundee Seventh-day Adventist church, the young people briefly described their plans for service and told of the remarkable way doors had opened and finance had become available. The group are close friends and shared amongst themselves their desire to help others and share their faith in less westernised cultures before settling into long-term education. Interest grew and spread through the group, as they learnt more about the volunteer programme. Emese told of having no money but prayed that if God would provide the funds she would go. The next day a cheque for £500 arrived in the post.

Their departure will leave a sad gap in Dundee but they can be assured of the good wishes and prayers of all their fellow believers in Scotland.

UKRAINE: ADRA RESPONDS TO WORST STORM IN A CENTURY [Nadia McGill/ADRA International]

More than 1,300 flood survivors in the Ukraine are receiving food baskets and personal hygiene items from the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) after heavy rains in July submerged 40,600 homes and nearly 84,000 acres, or 34,000 hectares, of farmland.

From 23 to 26 July, downpours hit western Ukraine, forcing thousands from their homes, and submerging towns and villages. Nearly 40 people have been listed as either dead or missing since the onset of the storms, which government officials are calling the worst storm to hit Ukraine in a century. In response to the tragedy, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko declared a three-month state of emergency in the region.

According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Emergency, more than 422 miles (679 km) of roads and more than 900 bridges were destroyed in the storms, leaving more than 300 towns and villages without electricity, downing communication lines, and blocking food access routes throughout five regions of western Ukraine. Survivors are desperately in need of clean water, food, medicine, hygiene items, and clothing.

ADRA is assisting 330 families in the Ivano-Frankivsk and Chernivtsi regions, two of the most severely affected in the country, providing food baskets stocked with rice, macaroni, sugar, flour, buckwheat, vegetable oil, and canned fish. Each basket also includes personal hygiene items such as bathing soap, shampoo, laundry detergent, cleanser, and items that can also be used to disinfect homes, reducing the spread of diseases.

"The food will meet the nutritional needs of people during the first weeks after the flooding," said Vasyl Hanulich, Country director for the ADRA Ukraine office.

To send your contribution to ADRA's Emergency Response Fund, please contact ADRA on 01923 681 723 or give online at <www.adra.org>.

ADRA is present in 125 countries, providing community development and emergency management without regard to political or religious association, age, gender, race, or ethnicity.

DALY REPORTS FROM THE OLYMPICS

We can't all compete in the Olympics but Bristol pastor, Richard Daly, loves the atmosphere so much that he is flying to Beijing next Tuesday, 12 August to participate, not as an athlete, but to report on the Christian presence at the games.

"I have been to the last two Olympics where I volunteered as a Chaplain," Richard told BUC News. "This time around I was trying to go as a chaplain but none were taken on from overseas so I thought I would try a different tack." Richard is known for his writing including for various newspaper columns. He applied to the British Olympic Association Media Department as a freelance as "an off chance", showed them some of his work and what he planned to cover and got accreditation.

Richard is taking personal holiday to enjoy the event where he plans to write articles on Christian athletes and will also be recording interviews for the likes of Premier Radio. He has also promised regular reports for BUC News. "It's great!" he says. "I can combine holiday, the joy of writing and a fantastic sporting event all in one!"

How does this fit in with his regular ministry? "There is no real eagerness on my part for it to fit directly into my ministry. However, I realise that there are many ministry opportunities such as writing Christian articles and reporting on the church in China." He hopes to attend the 1,000 member Adventist church in Beijing and gain a picture of what the church there is like. That could possibly add a bonus to his understanding of church and the international communities he works with in Bristol.

Stand-by to hear his reports in subsequent editions of BUC News. It is possible that an Adventist junior athlete will be giving her views on her faith and sport on the BBC Radio 4 Sunday programme between 07.10 and 07.55 this coming Sunday, 10 August.

YOUTH FORUM BACK ONLINE

The London Youth Federation Forum is back online. David Adams, LYF Web Technologies leader told BUC News that they took the forums down late last year for maintenance and a face lift. After a break it is now relaunched with additional features and having gone through some initial security testing.

David says, "As always the conversation is very lively and with over 2,804 topics and 650 plus members from all over the world, there is bound to be something that you would like to comment or be a part of!"

The London Youth Federation forums started life in November 2004 and soon grew to be a lively, thought-provoking and sometimes controversial area of the Adventist web-scene. The whole idea of the LYF forums was an environment where both Christians and non-Christians can converse, discuss and share views on various different issues and topics.

David is also positive about future plans. "As well as listing the latest events to take place in London (we will be expanding this to include the SEC), the London Youth Federation is also planning to launch an online radio station featuring interviews, the latest music, sermons, Bible studies and a lot of other Christian content." He says that they already have a few names signed up to be DJs for this venture. However, they need more recruits so if you're interested in being a part of the LYF radio ministry please email them on <info@londonyouthfed.org.uk>.

The LYF forums can be reached by going to <http://www.londonyouthfed.org.uk/forum>.

VOLUNTEERS RAISE CASH FOR HOMELESS PROJECT

Chelmsford's local newspaper, Chelmsford Weekly news, reports that "dedicated volunteers from the Chelmsford Seventh-day Adventist church, who run a Sunday food kitchen for the homeless, were in the town's high street on Saturday 2 August, to promote the group's activities and future plans."

As reported in BUC News #573 (25 January 2008), since July last year they have been giving a warm welcome and a plate of food each Sunday between mid-day and 2.00 pm to the homeless in the Chelmsford area. Chipema Chitambala is in charge of the programme and with a team of helpers is ensuring good food and a change of clothes for those who need it, is available right through the year.

Now the group is hoping to expand its operation next year and is currently looking for suitable larger premises and raising funds. Chipema told Chelmsford Weekly news, "Some people couldn't believe that we have had over 100 different people on our register of names, some people have put their names forward to help us, which is really good."

Olivia Smith was in the church congregation last Sabbath for Community Services day and states that she was really impressed with the vision that God has given the team. "They are going with what God has given them to do and not holding back," she told BUC News. Olivia is a minister's wife with a young family but could not be more supportive of what she is seeing the church doing.

Meanwhile Chipema and her team are looking at a number of options for relocating their feeding service to larger premises where they can serve the community further.

LATEST MESSENGER ONLINE

The latest edition of the Messenger, the official journal of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the UK and Ireland, can now be found online at <www.adventistnews.org.uk/messenger>. My favourite picture is the Liverpool Pathfinder baptism on page 4, but this edition also highlights the Newbold College graduation, challenges us to "stand up and speak up for your values and convictions" and includes the usual good news of baptisms and church growth in several locations.
