CAR-JACKING CRISIS AT NEWBOLD
A security checkpoint, a car-jacking and armed militia transformed parts of the Newbold College campus on Wednesday, 13 August. Explosions and gunfire brought ADRA staff on a personal security training course into realistic situations where individually and as teams they were forced to plan and think on their feet for both their own and their team's safety.
The simulation exercise climaxed four days of training organised by the Adventist Development and Relief Agencies UK office (ADRA-UK) on behalf of the ADRA network. ADRA staff in donor offices frequently travel overseas where they are managing development and relief projects. Much of that work takes place in areas of the world that can be insecure so putting staff at risk. ADRA-UK director, Bert Smit developed the training initiative after two staff were ambushed 18 months ago while on assignment overseas. He says, "From experience we know that learning how to keep secure in different situations we may be facing is important. In addition, ADRA-UK has a 'duty of care' for its staff and this Personal Security Training meets the UK legal requirements for providing protection for our staff."
The four days of training was led by RedR, a highly respected agency that specialises in providing security training to humanitarian agencies. The ADRA network has been using RedR and its training materials for many years in helping implementing countries to develop security strategies. This was the first time a specialised Personal Security Training was provided for ADRA donor offices in Europe. "It's your life, you have the primary responsibility to take care of it," trainer Graham Flood-Hunt told the participants from Denmark, Germany, the Czech Republic, ADRA's EU office in Brussels, ADRA-International headquarters in Washington DC and the UK office. As a former Metropolitan Police officer, and now as a consultant to the Swiss Army and various agencies around the world Graham had a wealth of experience to draw on in sharing the skills of self-preservation from being picked up at the airport, through checking security issues, dealing with checkpoints, minefields and crossfire to hostage situations and how to give yourself the best chance of survival. ADRA-UK Programmes Assistant, Howa Avan-Nomayo hopes that much of it stays in his mind. "The most important thing for me is planning to be in control as much as possible with the awareness that so much is uncontrollable."
The training was a mixture of theory and practical with Graham being joined by Paul Wooster of the Norfolk Fire Brigade. Paul is part of an emergency response team that is often early on the scene of major disasters world-wide. His practical and calm manner in helping develop appropriate strategies balanced with his sense of humour as he tossed a hand grenade into the middle of the group who immediately scattered as the blank exploded. Perhaps it was fortuitous that he also spoke about dealing with stress in one of his later workshops.
As a Technical Assistant of Emergency Management, Sasha Ross joined the training from head-office. "I came because security is integral to the good management of projects - and my own safety," she said. She saw the simulation exercise as a good insight into safety and security and has learnt to "be more intentional in planning and ready for those split second decisions."
Jahn Fisher from ADRA Germany has faced danger first hand, being driven by a local driver through a mine-field. It is not an experience he wants to repeat. "I've learnt not to rely entirely on the local office for security," he said. "I need my own guidelines and limits on what I'll accept." As an added bonus he saw the ADRA network family coming closer together during the training. "Team building and good communication was one of the real side-benefits of the exercise," he said.
Bert is satisfied with the outcome of the course. "It has made the participants aware that in all situations one's own safety matters most. Even though we were, for instance, introduced to mines and how to react when under fire, the most important lesson was to make sure you never face such situations. Preparedness and anticipation are key to travelling in safety."
And how did the Newbold community react to guns, grenades, car-jacking and hostage taking on the college campus? "Newbold is a peace loving community," Berit Lisle, College Bursar, states, but she was comfortable with the campus being used for these exercises. "We have a wonderful campus with plenty of open space and excellent conference rooms for this kind of training," she added. "The college has had a long association with ADRA and we were more than happy to facilitate training that will protect ADRA personnel as they carry out their humanitarian programme in some of the more dangerous parts of the world."

SUMMER HARVEST IN SEC [Dr.Richard de Lisser SEC Communication Director]
Summer brings with it renewed energy and a zest for life. With longer days and shorter nights there is a feeling in the air that much can be accomplished. In the life of the church summertime brings with it evangelistic activities and accomplishments. In the South England Conference over 200 new members have been added to the church through baptism between April and July. With hundreds more being contacted daily, the work of the church goes on relentlessly even during the traditional times of holiday, rest and respite.
In the Cornerstone church, Eastbourne, an Asian couple who had been studied with by Pastor Alan Hart were baptized at a service held at the Polegate Seventh-day Adventist church and joyfully received into fellowship. Through the leadership of Pastor Hart the Cornerstone, Polegate, and Hastings churches are engaged in field evangelism conducting community surveys leading to community events, distributing Bible study cards and establishing a community outreach choir, breaking down barriers through the power of gospel music.
In Great Yarmouth, Thetford and Lowestoft Pastor Michael Walker continues to conduct an evangelistic seminar that has attached great interest. One lady had not been to church for some 50 years since she was a little girl in Sunday school stated that "these meetings have awakened her interest in the Bible". Now she is wishing to pray once again!
In Northolt Pastor Everett Picart has led his group in conducting a community survey which has yielded 15 postal Bible study requests and four regular home Bible studies. The Community survey has also uncovered a family, parenting and youth need in the area. The Northolt group is now endeavouring to meet these needs. In Southall Pastor Picart reports that a witnessing programme organized by the Youth and Teens department took place during Sabbath School time with more than a dozen young people attending to share their faith, witnessing to local people in the Park and along the pavement and the entrance of a busy market place.
In Plumstead Pastor Esson reports that six persons were added to the church through baptism as the churches gear up to celebrate 25 years of community involvement through a series of meetings, 22 - 24 August, in which they will honour community champions.
In Hope Community Pastor Fergus Owusu-Boateng reports that while many may have been celebrating the first official day of summer on the 21 June, the Beckenham 'Hope Community' church was engaged in celebrations of a heavenly kind as four individuals were baptised. Pastor Owusu-Boateng also reports that following a successful evangelistic campaign held at the Lee Valley church by international evangelist, Dr. Paul Adu Sampah, 24 members were added to the church through baptism.
After five weeks of evangelistic meetings held in the Tottenham West Green Road and Edmonton Central Churches Pastor Burnett reports that 25 new members were added to the church through baptism. This number swells to 32 if we include the seven baptized in March following a youth campaign conducted by Pastor Steve Riley from Trinidad.
In Lewisham following a successful evangelistic campaign held by Pastor Kirk Thomas, Pastor James Phillip reports that 18 new members were added to the church through baptism.
The summer is not yet over the harvest continues.
MORE THAN LENTIL SOUP
Why would a world famous American progressive rock artist find himself performing at Newbold Church Centre in Bracknell? Known in the music scene for bands such as 'Transatlantic' and 'Spock's Beard' and his guest appearances on other artists albums', Neal, an atheist from birth, told worshippers on Sabbath evening, 9 August that he found himself worshipping the god of music - but the more he worshipped, the more he found himself depressed. "Like Esau," he discovered, "you need more than lentil soup". After a long journey, which he shared with his Newbold audience, he gave his life to Jesus in 2002.
While still acclaimed for his musical prowess by his secular fans, Neal's music now focuses on worship with its centre pointing towards God. As the penultimate performance of this summers European Tour, he chose Newbold Church centre as the venue since a number of Newbold Members are among those who have been blessed by his music and ministry. Nick Barclay is one of them: "I was a fan of Neal Morse's music and wanted to see what his worship-style sessions were like, as opposed to a concert." The result for Nick was a new meaning to worship. "His dedication to the Lord and his ease at praying to the Lord whenever he felt the occasion for it really impressed me." Espen Johnson came not knowing what to expect: "He was very sincere in like his love for God, the way he prayed and the way he sang his songs... It is awesome and I hope there are going to be more [such concerts]."
The evening was organised by Newbold Church Youth Leader, Steven Hulbert. He says, "Neal Morse is my favourite Christian musician and expresses a true love for God and a great testimony in his music. It was great to meet and worship with Him at Newbold."
The event was not so much concert as testimony and worship. Tired at the end of a summer's touring Neal still shared from his heart. Edit Liebhardt came to organise the refreshments but found herself enchanted: "I liked how many of his songs applied to me as well. He talked about a lot of the emotions all Christians go through like doubt and wanting God's guidance."
Steven feels it is good to expose the Newbold community to other Christians who have a real faith and testimony to share. At the same time the worship evening opened up the Newbold Community to others who drove up to three hours to attend. "Newbold has great facilities. We had a lot of visitors from outside the Adventist Church come because Neal came." Nick adds, "It can build relations between other 'non-Adventist' Christians and, more importantly, helps to break down the mental 'security blanket' many Adventists seem to have."
Since his conversion Neal Morse has gone solo with the strong feeling that it "was God's will in his life". Now he has written many worship songs and still continues to write Christian prog. albums, his latest being 'Sola Scriptura'.
This is the second concert of its kind organised at Newbold Church Centre by the Youth Department. Programmes like this are seen by the church as complimenting "FOCUS", the Teen church led and run by Newbold youth that is making a positive impact on the teen community surrounding the college.
"EIGHT MILLION, AND RISING.... "
[Audrey Balderstone travelled to the ASI North America Convention in Tampa, Florida and brings this report on the way members of the Adventist Services and Industries organisation are doing great things for God.]
A galvanised steel structure to one side of the large platform was the intriguing sight which met the large congregation which gathered for the opening night of the ASI North America Convention. It turned out to be a scaled down model of the 'One Day Church', the brain-child of Gawain McNeilus and Maranatha International. With eleven new churches being formed each day throughout the world there is great need for these 4,000 congregations to have a 'spiritual home' of their own.
The 'One Day Church' was only one of the many inspiring projects which the attendees heard about over the three days of the Convention. Among the many thrilling testimonies of God's leading, guiding and protective care was the story related by the Mosier family, missionaries in The Democratic Republic of Congo. Immediately after take-off the plane in which they were travelling to visit their son serving in another part of Congo, crashed on to the commercial area of the city of Goma. Forty people were killed and more than 100 were injured but the Mosier family survived and gave thanks to God for their miraculous escape.
As well as inspiring devotionals and thrilling testimonies ASI attendees had the opportunity to participate in seminars covering evangelistic, health, business and non-profit issues. Before each Convention a large "Youth for Jesus" programme is conducted in the host city. Preparatory work is done for months before the young people arrive to conduct bible studies and hold a campaign. On Friday evening they testified to the thrill of leading others to Christ and of the baptisms which had resulted.
ASI Chapters are springing up all over the world and Sabbath afternoon was devoted to interviews with ASI members from abroad. Countries in Africa, Asia, Australia and Europe were represented. Among those from Europe Audrey Balderstone, past President of ASI Europe, was interviewed by Debbie Young, past President of ASI North America.
Pastor Jan Paulsen, President of the World Church, joined the congregation on Friday evening. Pastor Paulsen spoke briefly on a number of occasions and closed the Convention with a devotional on Sabbath evening. Pastor Paulsen emphasised that there should be no division between Administration, Pastors and Laity. "This is God's work", he said, "and we are all in it together." Expressing thanks for the support and hard work of ASI Pastor Paulsen urged that we continue working closely with the Church so that together we can finish the task Christ has entrusted to us.
The highlight of the Convention was, without doubt, the way in which the attendees rose to the challenge of supporting forty projects with sums ranging from US$10,000 to $1 million. The total sum needed was $2.5 million. The 'One Day Church' took centre stage during the Sabbath morning service and was rotated to show the different claddings which local congregations could apply. This captured the imagination of all present and when the total of the offering was announced it was a staggering $8,034,672. At the close of the Convention it was announced that a further 40 churches at a cost of $3,000 per church had been pledged. As Audrey Balderstone said in her interview, paraphrasing the motto of William Carey, "Attempt great things for God and we can be certain that we can expect great, great things from God."

MAHALI SELEPE'S ALBUM ON iTUNES. Mahali's debut album is now out. Please visit the website: <
www.mahaliselepe.co.uk>. The album is called Dignified. God's sheer elegance, ultra virtues, timeless beauty, priceless attributes and irresistible love all evoke the ultimate thanks contained in this album which stands out from most conventional gospel releases. It is friendly to the ear, instructive to the Johnny-come-lately in the music world, and a real treat to the learned in music. You can't help but join in celebration and appreciate the sobriety she brings to life in this her grand work. She is decidedly giving praise and in conversation with her Maker. She epitomises a person who has given her all for Christ. This is not a display of raw talent only, it is the combination of rich experience compressed into melody and dance, the liberty of rowing your own canoe and the genius of an African woman. In this work she has gracefully catapulted herself arguably into the category of among the best in the world. For more details email <mvselepe@yahoo.co.uk> or call 07930932236.
