Adventist-laymen's Services and Industries (ASI) members donated $8 million during the organization's August 6 to 9 weekend convention, quadrupling last year's offering. The marked upswing in giving is spurred largely by interest surrounding the One-Day Church project, ASI officials said.

First announc ed in April at the Seventh-day Adventist Church's spring business meetings, the project is a church-supported joint venture of ASI and Maranatha Volunteers International meant to address the need for substantial yet easily assembled church structures in regions where membership is soaring.

Structures, which can be completed in as little as six hours, provide the framework and the roof, leaving local members to finish the walls with affordable and readily available materials, such as brick or bamboo. In July, Adventists in Ecuador began worshipping in the first One-Day Church.

ASI members' donations reflect their enthusiasm for projects such as the One-Day Church, said Steve Hamstra, ASI communication director. The organization, he said, relies on "motivated and inspired" members rather than heavy marketing to raise funds for projects. "People are excited about this," he said.

Established in 1947, ASI provides networking for some 800 Adventist businesspeople who share Christ in the marketplace.

Following the recent outbreak of fighting in Georgia, in the eastern European Caucasus region near the Black Sea, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) is preparing to respond to the needs of thousands who fled from the violence. More than 2,000 people have died in the first week of fighting and nearly 100,000 have been displaced, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The latest conflict, centered in the South Ossetia region and involving troops from the countries of Georgia and Russia, caused widespread destruction as a result of air strikes and shelling.

"The situation on the ground is deteriorating, sparking a significant movement of population," said Elisabeth Byrs of the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

ADRA is coordinating relief efforts with UN agencies and international non-governmental organizations to address the current emergency situation. ADRA will also work to provide medical assistance in Tbilisi, where a rapid influx of displaced persons fleeing the fighting has strained the city's food supply, medical, and shelter capacities.

Of the approximately 56,000 displaced persons currently inside Georgia more than 40,000 are from Gori, according to the U.N. An additional 12,000 are from South Ossetia, and 30,000 others have crossed into Russia's North Ossetia region.

Luka Daniel, president of the Seventh-day Adventist Church's West-Central Africa Division, announced his retirement August 15. Daniel will officially leave office at the end of December 2008.

Daniel became president of the region in 2003. He previously served as president of what is now the church's Southern Africa-Indian Ocean Division.

Daniel, 65, said the decision was based upon reaching retirement age and his recent health issues.

"Our thanks go to the General Conference for the all the support and.. advice, [and] to my fellow workers... [for] prayer on my behalf," Daniel said.

The new division president will be chosen in November and take office January 2009.
