Mexican Supreme Court upholds legal abortion

Quote:
Mexico's Supreme Court has voted to uphold legal abortion in the capital.

Mexico City is one of only a handful of places in Latin America that allow abortion without limitations in the first trimester.

The court's support of the Mexico City law opens the possibility that similar measures could be adopted elsewhere in Mexico. It might also inspire other leftist Latin American cities to follow suit.

In this case the Federal District (which is where Mexico City is located) passed a low allowing abortion during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. The Mexican Supreme Court ruled that the Mexican Constitution does not address when life begins or grant any rights to the unborn. Thus the Federal District is free to pass laws allowing abortion.

This is much different than the US Supreme Court which invented the right to privacy and ruled that abortion is a Constitutional right. The Mexican Supreme Court is simply giving the power to the people to decide in a democratic manner if they want to permit abortion or ban it.
