STAFFORD CHURCH BRINGS HEALTH EXPO TO THE MARKET PLACE [Sharon Platt-McDonald, BUC Health Ministries Director]

Shoppers approaching Stafford Market Square on Tuesday, 26 August were joyfully surprised by a team of smiling volunteers in yellow Tee-shirts handing out health literature and an attractive programme booklet inviting them to "The Abundant Life Roadshow".

Superbly organised by Dana Sudworth, the Health Expo was a collage of colours, posters, banners, balloons, food displays, health screening, healthy living tips, music, interactive activities for adults and children, quizzes, questionnaires, one to one health coaching, aerobic session, massage and various free literature.

The focal point was a large white canopy and backdrop which housed the various displays and activities. A literature stand housed the key Seventh-day Adventist church magazines like Focus and LIFE.info. 28 volunteers in coordinated T-shirts with the Stafford church logo and contact details interacted with members of the public. Many visitors hummed along to the amplified gospel tracks and instrumentals being played.

With a 10.00 am kick-off the official welcome was given by local Stafford pastor, Carlton Douglas followed by a song from the attending choir and opening payer by Sharon Platt-McDonald, BUC Health Ministries director. The key presentation was delivered by the Mayor of Stafford, Counsellor Anne Edgeller who in her opening remarks praised the initiative taken by the Stafford Adventist church for "bringing such and innovative and effective health programme to the community residents". She ended by stating that she hopes they will return next year and have an even larger crowd. She then led in the official cutting of the ribbon and declaring the event open.

A payer table situated at the side of the tent gave participants an opportunity to write a prayer request on a card, tie the card to a balloon and then release the balloon into the sky in a gesture of lifting the prayer heavenward.

The children's craft corner was very popular with actives divided by age group and related to healthy eating and identifying the correct foods in their nutritive groupings. The younger children got to keep the healthy fruit crown which they made and placed proudly on their heads while the older children took away with them their colourful fruit scramble activity sheets.

The health screening section was kept very busy with a stream of visitors gaining a full health check undertaken by qualified Adventist doctors and nurses. Participants left with a completed detailed health questionnaire. Both the Mayor and her escort participated in the health screening which they stated was "very beneficial" and that they "gained a number of useful tips". Also very popular was the head, neck and shoulder massage which had a queue of enthusiastic individuals anxious to get some immediate stress relief.

A brightly coloured bouncy castle kept the children busy and drew parents and guardians to participate in the activities. The mascot for the day was a bear costume worn by Dana's husband, Andrew. He generated great interest from parents and children alike as he mingled in the crowd and escorted individuals to the health canopy.

At the close of the Expo over 500 helium balloons with the church logo were released into the sky to the cheers of all the attendants.

Dana Sudworth, organiser behind the event, explained that 2 years ago she had a vision of a Health Expo. Engaging the community and sharing her faith has been a keen interest for Dana for many years. She is passionate about witnessing in a relevant way to a majority indigenous population and believes fervently in health as the 'right arm of the gospel' and 'entering wedge'.

This is more than a one day event. Those who completed follow-up forms will be given opportunity to attend an Abundant Life Health Club commencing in September. This will include vegan cooking, nutrition advice, aerobics and presentations. Dana states; "Establishing our reason for wellbeing, that we are God's creation and we need to care for our bodies and the gift of life He has blessed us with, is a good base to start. At this point you can introduce people to the God who we worship and enquire whether they have any prayer requests. Then from the prayer link we can introduce them to Bible studies".

COMMUNITY FUN DAY ATTRACTS OVER 1,000 [Catherine Anthony Boldeau]

Over one thousand people, most from the local community, streamed onto Stanborough Park on Bank Holiday Monday, 25 August, for a day of fun, games, concerts and good food organised by Mums in Action, a Watford based voluntary organisation.

"The emphasis of the day is for the church to connect with the community," said Barbara Lawrence co-founder of Mums in Action. And the day certainly achieved that. Local community groups such as The Watford Lions, The Watford Chinese Association, Mums against Knife and Gun Crime and Watford Sheltered Housing had stalls with information leaflets, services and fund-raising products. The local constabulary and fire service were also present and provided the community with a more "hands-on feel" to their critical services. Representing the Watford Borough Council was chairperson, Jan Brown, accompanied by her husband Ian. Sam Davis, President of the South England Conference was also present at the event.

Entertainment was varied. There was a bouncy castle and a fun house, alongside other activities for children. Music was provided by Manhattan Quest, a local jazz band and visiting artistes, the Focus Band, from Newbold Teen Church, Binfield, Berkshire. They received rapturous applause for their performances. The Watford Irish Dancers, Salsa Revolution and The Mums in Action Summer School Choir all gave delightful renditions in the evening concert.

Barbara commented, "It was a great day. I believe that by having fun without the need for additional stimulants, Mums in Action and the Seventh-day Adventist Church reflect the character of Jesus to the local community."

CHURCH HALL BECOMES BEE-HIVE OF HUMANITARIAN ACTIVITY [John Arthur]

More than 21 cubic metres of needy supplies have been transferred from the Seventh-day Adventist church on Gwydyr Road, Crieff, into a large truck destined for Romania.

Furniture, bedding, carpets, cutlery, plumbing equipment, office supplies and many other useful materials were donated by members of the church and the community for four impoverished care homes in northern Romania.

The project initiator, Ruth Farrer, said "I am very thrilled by this amazing response, and with the good number of helpers who turned up to pack and load the goods." Ruth will be travelling out to Romania at personal expense to ensure that the supplies are delivered satisfactorily.

In addition to material aid, the Crieff Adventist church is sending £4,000 each year for three years to assist a sector of the Romanian population which is still marginalised. The organisers are greatly indebted to another Christian charity, Blytheswood Care (based in Ross-shire), which will be responsible for the logistical arrangements.

"POWER LABS" FOR CAMBRIDGE CHILDREN [Delocia White]

On Sabbath afternoon, 16 August Cambridge church members gathered for a special children's feature: a spotlight drama of the events of Vacation Bible School 2008 held 4 - 8 August. The drama opened with the VBS theme "Power Labs: discovering Jesus' miraculous power" and featured more than 20 children engaged in various laboratory activities that emphasized main themes about the power of Jesus in their lives. Each day the children carried out lab activities that focused on a specific outcome of Jesus' power and sang songs that reinforced the discoveries they made. By the end of the week the children had made five discoveries; namely, that Jesus' power can make them thankful, helpful, brave, live forever and share God with others.

The spotlight drama confirmed the success of this year's VBS ably conducted by Hlonitshiwe Bafanah, the VBS director, and her team. To recognise the children's attendance, Pastor Lombart presented them with certificates of participation after which Mrs Bafanah solicited greater participation and contribution for next year's VBS. She expressed the hope that VBS will be held in other communities to reach a greater number of children. The afternoon ended with the children giving live renditions of their favourite VBS songs. The children have learnt powerful lessons that will help them be better witnesses for Jesus.

'NEW CHAPTER OPENS' AT JOHN LOUGHBOROUGH SCHOOL [Laura Osei/Victor Lammy/Gina Abbequaye/BUC News]

A video report of John Loughborough students getting their results is now available on the video sharing site, YouTube. This adds to the students' celebrations at their annual Thanksgiving Service in the specially decorated school gym on Sabbath, 5 July. This gave opportunity for the Year 11 senior students, at the end of their compulsory schooling, to thank God for His blessings and to show appreciation to parents, staff and friends for their encouragement, prayers and support during their school years.

The service was eagerly awaited. Every effort was made to give our students a special send off as they move on to further their studies and training. They had worked hard to meet the new GCSE A* - C targets that includes English and Mathematics. Some were determined to put in more than extra effort to achieve a higher than average performance in their GCSE coursework tasks and exam test papers. Interim Executive Headteacher, Mrs Laura Osei, wanted the service to be extra special for the students who had performed under very demanding circumstances during the school year.

Year 11 students had many misgivings and doubts about the venue because of the state of the gym. Mrs Anne Phillips, Deputy Head, Mrs Osei, and Mrs Gina Abbequaye, SEC Interim Education director met with the students to encourage them to trust in their artistic talents and DIY skills to recreate the gym.

The students with grim faces took the chance to believe in their vision and on Thursday, 3 July, the staff, support staff, students namely Julia Jones, Judith Jones, Quason Matthews, Michaela Whiteley, Latique (ex-student), Alpha and Afia Wilson (ex-students), Mrs Osei and Mrs Abbequaye spent many hours in the gym and throughout the night on scaffolding weaving, stapling and hanging 600 metres of satin and organza to transform and recreate it into a banqueting hall. Mr Lammy also gave many hours of his time in preparing flyers and the programme.

It was a stunning, mind-blowing transformation. Many people described the gym as having the 'Wow Factor'! The gold padded banqueting chairs, off-set with the cream background covering the walls and swathed with gold, copper, chocolate, and dark brown organza displays on the wall was a sight to behold. We had comments such as 'beautiful', 'wonderful', 'marvellous' and 'glorious' to describe the setting. The gymnasium was thus transformed into a sanctuary fit for holy worship. The students were splendidly attired for the occasion. The gym was full to capacity with over 500 parents, friends, staff, current and past students, church and community members.

The Sabbath School programme was special with two experienced teachers, Mr Brian McFarlane and Mr Moses Arendse presenting the Sabbath School lesson. The excellent PowerPoint presentation by Mrs Christine Geohagen (Associate Assistant Headteacher) gave a wonderful overview of the highlights of the school year. The graduates participated in leading out in the first part of the day.

The Divine Hour was a thrilling experience as the graduates marched in pairs into the gym to glorious singing and music. All present were astounded by the sight and their coordinated steps. They looked resplendent in their cream and brown flowing gowns and tuxedos as they took their seats at the front. Miss Sampson and four of the graduates led out in the praise and worship with Miss Francis accompanying and singing a delightful and soul-stirring solo.

South England Conference President, Pastor Sam Davis, joined the Year 11s as he encouraged and charged them to achieve their best as they step out into the future. Our Guest Speaker, Enoch Adu, summa cum laude Religion graduate from Oakwood Adventist University, Alabama, USA thrilled the audience with his electrifying and motivating presentation. With responses and affirmation of 'amens' the graduates were directed that they cannot achieve their best without God as their Guide and Mentor. Enoch Adu spoke from his past experiences with God and the Year 11s were enraptured by his delightful and thought-provoking sermon.

In the afternoon Laura Osei shared with the students various aspects of what a new chapter in the graduates lives would actually entail. The students were charged by Pastor Sam Davis and Mrs Osei to always exemplify Christian conduct and be good role models to their peers on leaving school. God's continued watch care, guidance and blessing was thus implored to assist them in this effort.

Parents and teachers were given tributes and flowers and Mrs Phillip who ensured the smooth running of the day's programme received a special tribute and presentation for her long-term support of the school. The day finally ended with the graduates finally receiving their Records of Achievement Certificates.

A selection of photos from the event are available in the BUC picture gallery: <www.adventist.org.uk>. A YouTube video of results day can be seen at <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-peSrpwa4I>.

STANBOROUGH PRIMARY SCHOOL APPOINTS NEW HEAD [Catherine Anthony Boldeau]

The board of Stanborough School recently appointed Mrs Kathleen Hanson as the Acting Head of the Primary School with Mrs Julie Koziol as Acting Deputy Head. Kathleen was the Deputy Head for the past two years and has a wealth of experience in the field of education. She holds a BD (Hons) and an MA in Education.

Kathleen's vision for the Primary School is based on her deep and firm belief in the Almighty: "Achieving Excellence God's Way". It is her opinion that for her vision to be realized, the school needs to develop a learning community - providing lifelong learning for all. In addition to this, she is a strong believer in the power of togetherness, unity and co-operation. Kathleen also believes in excellence and would like to see teachers and pupils strive toward this goal and finally she believes that God's way is a balanced way and that there should be work/life balance for the staff and school/life balance for the pupils.

Mrs Hanson says, "I believe that Christian values are slowly being eroded from our society and that our children need to see qualities such as love, unity, forgiveness, peace... in action. These, I believe, are the qualities that in essence, make a Christian School."

She has a personal commitment to the school motto stating, "God is indeed the Master of our School. As Acting Head, I see that my role is to regularly spend time 'on the mountain top', in communion with God, thereby ensuring that I receive the necessary direction and guidance for the School".

CHRISTMAS SHOEBOX APPEAL 2008 [Valerie Austin]

Following the enormous success of last year's "Flip Flop Shoebox" appeal, with over 7,000 boxes collected and distributed in Madagascar, ADRA-UK is planning a repeat this year to send Christmas packages to Guyana. It is a fun way to help very poor children to experience a little joy in their lives.

Guyana, a small country wedged between Venezuela, Suriname and Brazil on the Atlantic coast of South America is a developing nation. Many citizens live below the poverty line. A lot of parents cannot afford to provide for the basic needs of their children. Numerous children have lost their parents due to death from a number of diseases including HIV/AIDS. Added to this, there are a number of female single parent homes in Guyana. It is therefore extremely difficult to make ends meet. Consequently, they have no other recourse but to turn to orphanages and other institutions which cater for these vulnerable children. In Guyana, there are twenty-two such homes scattered across the country.

Many of these homes are privately run and have to depend heavily on outside assistance for their annual upkeep. In this regard, whatever outside help they could muster will be readily accepted. Anticipating your generous efforts this autumn ADRA Guyana says, "Thanks in advance for this humanitarian gesture which will, no doubt, have far reaching impact on the well-being of the recipients."

Shoeboxes can be filled with toys such as play dough, building blocks, story books, clothes, toiletry items, school supplies etc. and should be nicely wrapped and clearly labelled with the appropriate age and sex. Please make sure ALL items are NEW!

Please do NOT include breakable items, food or sweets, toys that need batteries, medicines, or war-related items.

All boxes need to be received by Monday, 10 November. Boxes can be delivered to ADRA, Stanborough Park, Watford, WD25 9JZ during business hours (Monday to Thursday 9-5, and Friday 9-noon).

Please help to bring a little happiness in the lives of orphans/poor children of Guyana! For more information visit our website, <adra.org.uk> or call our office on 01923-681743.

Pastor Logan had given 16.5 years of ministerial service in the South England Conference, Irish and Welsh Missions. He began his ministry in Taunton and he served for many years in seeking to plant a church in the city of Cork in the Republic of Ireland.

Welsh Mission President, John Surridge says, "Mike was a highly valued and much loved colleague and friend and I know that we will all miss him. However the greatest loss and hurt will be felt by the immediate family - particularly Evelyn - and I know that you will keep them in your prayers at this very difficult time."

The funeral is to be held on Friday, 29 August at 12 noon at Newmarket Seventh-day Adventist church, Kilnasoolagh, Newmarket-on-Fergus, Co Clare, Republic of Ireland.
