LINKING FAITH AND LEARNING [Anne Pilmoor]

One-hundred and fifty educators from across the UK and Ireland attended a Faith and Learning Conference at Newbold College Church Centre on Monday, 1 September. Organised by the British Union Conference Education department, the purpose of the conference was to provide 'space' for the participants to reflect and refocus on the purpose of Christian schools, and Adventist schools in particular. Dr Keith Davidson, BUC Education director summed it up succinctly in one sentence in his opening remarks 'educating for eternity combines scholarly excellence and Christian confidence.' Similarly, BUC President Pastor Don McFarlane encouraged each of us to consider what was different about what we were offering in our schools and suggested that if we could not identify any difference, then perhaps there was little point in our existence.

Two guest presenters, Dr John Wesley Taylor from Southern University and Dr Larry Burton from Andrews University presented a biblical rationale for the integration of faith and learning and practical models used by experienced practitioners. One of the interesting models was the use of the fall-redemption paradigm as a means of problem resolution in teaching and learning. An example of this would be firstly to encourage the learner to identify the beautiful, true and valuable, then the bad, ugly or false. The next stage would help the learner to look at various choices that could be made and what the outcomes of those choices might be. After all the questioning, the debate and sense-making exercises, the learner would then be led to make informed and reasoned choices, which effect personal change and strengthened character. The Adventist Philosophy of educating thinkers rather than reflectors is well supported by this model and encourages the deepest levels of learning which are always transformational.

Despite all the fascinating theory, philosophy and research shared with participants, the overarching message for me was simple, yet profound: Effective integration of faith and learning requires Christian teachers to have a foundational understanding of Christian education and a commitment to think and teach Christianly. In short it means that I am committed to model the character of Christ to each of my students! Now that's what I call awesome!

A selection of pictures from the conference can be found in the BUC picture gallery: <www.adventist.org.uk>. Video reports are on the HopeTV website at <http://www.hopetv.org.uk/content/media-library/series-program-overview/medialibrary/31/>.

SERVANT LEADERS MEET AT BUC OFFICE

A crowded boardroom at the British Union Conference office saw a first for the UK and Ireland - a joint meeting of all Officers and Department Directors from the two Conferences and the Union along with the five Presidents. The all day event on Thursday, 4 September aimed to see how departments could cooperate more closely together and as a united team help move the programme of the church forward.

In his keynote devotional BUC President, Pastor Don McFarlane reflected on the attitude of Jesus expressed in Philippians 2:5-10. He said, "Jesus did not coin the phrase, 'servant leadership,' He demonstrated it." Speaking from the heart he shared that as a child he admired pastors for the cars they drove. As a teenager he came to admire them for their preaching, but then he became a pastor and found that they are ordinary people. He said, "better to look at the perfect role model to be found in Jesus." As leaders, he encouraged directors to listen, to empathise, to teach and not to be afraid to reach out with new ideas. "Better to try and fail," he said. "We can still learn - and we may try and find we succeed."

The rest of the morning sought cooperation noting that "we are all in this together". Time was spent looking at who each department was serving, what the important priorities were, what the main vision should be, and how plans developed by one level of administration correspond to that of other levels with a particular emphasis on the local church.

After a positive social time around the lunch table, and another session of sharing, break-out groups then formulated constructive proposals for 2009 and beyond. The general consensus was that this was a helpful and positive day. The only problem was that time was too short - so next year it may run as a two or three day event.

ADULT SINGLES BARBECUE [Althea & Delocia White]

On Sunday, 17 August, 35 Adventist single adults converged at Cambridge church for its first Adult Singles social event - a Singles' Barbecue. The age group ranged from early twenties to over 50s representing various nationalities and races of never married, divorced and widowed singles. Sharon Bruno-Augustine, Cambridge Family Life director warmly welcomed everyone and commended the Singles' Ministry for organising the event and extending invitations to singles in the SEC. We enjoyed a variety of delicious barbecue dishes and engaged in informal chats as we became acquainted with one another. It was amazing how easy conversations were! It was though we had known one another for a long time.

The highlight of the barbecue was a passionate and engaging discussion. Men and women eagerly shared thoughts on singleness and qualities they desired in potential partners. Our senior singles voluntarily imparted words of wisdom and others shared resource materials that they believed were helpful for singles. The discussion, although eliciting much laughter, was very sobering and highlighted the tension between expectations of the ideal and an acceptance of the reality, which so often differs according to culture.

Many individuals demonstrated an awareness of the importance of compatibility in successful relationships and more importantly, of growing together in marriage. This was endorsed by the parent of one of our singles who challenged us to live the ideals we desired in prospective partners. Despite the focus on finding suitable partners, some singles were keen to promote singleness as wholesome and blessed. A number of us confirmed that we were happy and fulfilled while still being open to the possibility of marriage. It was refreshing to discover that we would consider as partners only those who share our distinctive faith.

Our discussion ended to make way for play, participating in games that left us physically exhausted. As the day ended, everyone busied themselves with exchanging contact details and extending invitations to various events.

We had a wonderful time in Cambridge and we give God all the praise. Cambridge Singles' Ministry has achieved its objective - for singles to meet new people and begin to build a network of friendships. We thank everyone who contributed directly and indirectly to the success of this event, and especially to our pastor for his support. We hope that the event in Cambridge will help to promote and encourage Singles' Ministry in other churches and foster closer relationships among singles as we support each other socially and spiritually.

INTENSIVE BIBLE STUDY IN CRIEFF [John Arthur]

Programmed into the church's calendar at Crieff is an annual Bible Conference when topics of interest to the membership are addressed. This year the special speaker for this event was Dr Radisa Antic, lecturer and head of the Ellen G White Research Centre on the campus of Newbold College.

The meetings were well supported by the local congregation and a good number of members from other churches throughout the Scottish Mission. All in attendance were greatly enriched by Dr Antic's presentations. On the Friday evening the meeting between Jesus and the Woman of Samaria was explained as never before. The Sabbath morning topic was entitled "The Relevance of Ellen White for Adventist Theology and Practice". In the evening two practical and inspiring presentations were made under the titles "Revelation and Inspiration" and "Hermeneutical Principles". Then on the Sunday morning Dr Antic presented an encouraging and enlightening lecture on "The Sanctuary of God in the Book of Hebrews". Dr Antic's lectures and previous year's presentations by Daniel Duda and Jan Barna are downloadable on the Crieff church website: <www.crieffadventist.org.uk>.

An element which was greatly appreciated was Dr Antic's ability to illustrate many of his points by experiences gathered during lengthy service as a local pastor, an evangelist, a college lecturer, and a church administrator in Yugoslavia prior to his transfer to Newbold College in 2002. From 1995-2002 Dr Antic was the President of the South-East European Union Conference based in Belgrade. This was a difficult period for the whole church throughout the Balkans, yet by the grace of God the membership increased to the extent that that Adventist Church today has become the largest Protestant Church in Serbia and Montenegro - second only to the Orthodox Church.

AMAZON EXPEDITION AT STANBOROUGH PARK CHURCH [Catherine Anthony Boldeau]

The children of the Stanborough Park church and surrounding areas in the community were treated to an Amazon Expedition at the Centre from Tuesday 26 until Friday 29 August. The purpose of the club was to explore the 7 Cs of history - Creation, Corruption, Catastrophe, Confusion, Christ, Cross and Consummation.

To ensure that the children really gained an understanding of these concepts, the church and the centre were decorated like an Amazonian jungle. Scores of hours of hard work, creativity and energy went in to transforming the cream walls, with dense greenery and suitable toy animals and recorded water and bird sounds. The children (and many of the parents) were overwhelmed by the atmosphere.

Supporting the organisers, Emma Stickland and Christine Cornwall, were a large team of dedicated volunteers. Morning devotions were given by legendary Amazonian explorer, Pastor Ian Sleeman, who spoke to the children specifically about the 7 Cs of history.

What inspired Emma to run a Holiday Bible School this summer? Emma says, "A good friend of mine, Christine, ran a Holiday Bible Club programme with me at a Christian family camp in North Wales last summer. We enjoyed it so much that we thought we'd do something similar at Stanborough Park church this year".

NEW STUDENTS, NEW SEMESTER, NEW PRINCIPAL [Helen Pearson, PRO, Newbold College]

The Newbold College school year 2008-9 began with a welcome weekend composed of a variety of spiritual and social elements. Friday night saw vespers taken by students from family housing. Children and parents contributed musical items with a gentle devotional.

Dr Jane Sabes, Newbold's new principal, had received her visa and arrived on campus about ten days before the students. On Sabbath morning, she preached about prayer at two services attended by congregations of staff, students, and community members in the Newbold Church Centre. Focusing on the gospel stories of the cleansing of the temple - a house of prayer for all peoples, she encouraged her congregations to make prayer central to their lives and that of the Newbold community.

Later in the day, students and staff were invited to get to know each other better at two social events. In the afternoon, the sun shone on Sylvia's Garden as tables were set up for an English cream tea. Home-made scones with jam and cream formed the centrepieces of a sweet-toothed spread. Not too many takers for supper after that gourmet delight! The final event of the day was Scottish dancing in the gym led by a visiting team of specialists who successfully encouraged staff and students to try their hand at the ancient pastime!

On Sunday, forty students and staff took off for a tourist day in London. Big Ben, Parliament Square, the Embankment, Westminster Abbey, Downing Street, Horseguards' Parade, Buckingham Palace, and the Tate Gallery were all on the tour. One group went back to Westminster Abbey for vespers. "English weather but spirits high," said tour leader, John Crissey, "and we burned some calories en route!"

GOD IS MAKING A COMEBACK!

'Why doesn't God stay dead?' is the title of Professor John Walton's feature article in the latest FOCUS.

This magazine has been in preparation ever since Richard Dawkins published his 'The God Delusion' and announced his intention to commemorate the bicentenary of Charles Darwin's birth by 'an anti-God crusade' in the media. It was published today, 5 September, because it has arrived from the printers three months early. Since the 'anti-God crusade' seems to be already underway on Channel Four and in the 'heavy' newspapers, FOCUS editor David Marshall sees God's hand in this.

"We are blessed," Marshall said today, "to include in our Church in Britain no less than three top-flight scientists. Professor John Walton, Research Professor in Chemistry at the University of St Andrews, has a PhD and a senior doctorate (DSc) and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Dr Mart de Groot was, until retirement, chief of the Armagh Observatory. Dr Colin Mitchell, the Oxford-Cambridge-Harvard-educated author."

All three scientists collaborated with Marshall - and the GC's Cliff Goldstein - to produce this FOCUS special.

"God is making a comeback!" says Marshall. "If you want to get into His corner and do more than cheer, FOCUS: ORIGINS is available from the Adventist Book Centre."

DEATH OF PASTOR C D BAILDAM

We regret to inform you of the death of one of our retirees, Pastor C D Baildam who passed to his rest on Tuesday, 2 September, aged 86. Pastor Baildam served as a minister within the British Union Conference for just over 46 years. He worked in the Scottish and Welsh Mission and the North England/British Conference as a pastor/evangelist and concluded his ministerial work with a period of departmental responsibility at the British Union Conference. For a number of years he served as the BUC representative at the meetings of what was then the Council of Churches for Britain and Ireland. He is survived by his wife, Jean, and his two sons, John and Andrew and their families.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, 12 September at 3.00 pm at the Newbold Church Centre.

DEATH OF MRS HAZEL BROOKES

It is with sadness that we have heard of the passing of another of our retirees. Mrs Hazel Brookes (née Norris) passed away on Wednesday, 3 September. She was 80 years old. Mrs Brookes gave over 44 years of service to the church as a secretary, almost 40 of these years being spent at the Trans-European Division office. The funeral will be at a time to be announced.

BUC WEBSITE UPGRADE

The BUC web team has been working hard over the past months to upgrade the website that is the first port of call for those who want to find out more about the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the UK and Ireland. The upgrade included moving the complete website to a new, faster server, and then developing and implementing new templates and pages that are easier to read and navigate. "I went to the website and I was amazed at the improvement," states Kennedy Kundan from Portsmouth church. He is one of those who noticed the difference almost as soon as it was launched on Thursday, 28 August. John Jewell is appreciative that the developers, Paula Yunuen Carrillo and Andrew Leonce Jnr, took on board his suggestions regarding the sunset calendar. He said, "I know doing these things are quite time-consuming so your efforts are all the more appreciated."

During the development some pages became unavailable for a short time, and some areas are still under development. "We are in the final stages of ironing out the teething problems," states BUC Communication director, Victor Hulbert. "It has been a massive task with updating the many hundreds of pages and complicated databases that comprise the website. However, I believe the new format will help visitors get to the information they need more quickly." The BUC website, <www.adventist.org.uk> currently welcomes over 100,000 visitors every month and provides valuable resources from finding your nearest Adventist church, to news, picture galleries, statements of belief, resources, documents and a coming events diary.
