HIGH DAY IN GRANTHAM
The crowds surpassed all expectations on Sunday, 7 September as coaches, minibuses and cars rolled in for the annual Stanborough Press Open Day. Despite the poor weather-forecast, the closure of the A52 from Nottingham and even the gloomy economic forecasts sales on the day were up 35%.
That could be down in part to the quality of the music and the message in the main marquee. Travelling from London the world renowned Adventist Vocal Ensemble entertained and blessed a capacity marquee crowd with their broad repertoire of hymns and spirituals. Choir director, Ken Burton, told the audience, "We love to sing songs of praise, we often appear on 'Songs of Praise', now Songs of Praise has come to you." It was a spiritual event and the audience were enchanted with the music, queuing up afterwards to purchase over 200 CDs of AVE's premier album.
Not to be outdone, guest speaker, Nancy Van Pelt then took her audience on a roller coaster ride of how to build positive relationships in marriage. The one message that really seemed to get through was the "five second complement" - finding positive ways to surprise and build up your spouse during the day. Expanding her terrific sense of humour she said, "I'll give you one hundred points if you give your wife a compliment at home. I'll give you one thousand points if you give it her in front of her friends. She will glow!" Not only did her suggestions bring a smile to her audience, the results could be seen in practice for the rest of the day.
The market tent was busier than last year with massage on offer alongside harvest produce, second hand gifts, opportunities for Christian business, some very fancy hats and Hope Channel installation with JSD satellite.
A full report of the day will appear in the next edition of the Messenger. Photos and a multi-media report of the day can be seen in the BUC picture gallery, <

ADVENTIST LIFESTYLE MAY HELP SAVE THE PLANET
Seventh-day Adventists have long advocated a plant-based diet as the ideal for better health and longevity. Now a top scientist, Rajendra Pachauri, chair of the United Nations Nobel Prize winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, has added another reason: A vegetarian lifestyle may not only add to your lifespan, it may save the planet.
Pachauri is telling consumers to stop eating as much beef and lamb, suggesting that the best and easiest way of stemming climate change is to not eat meat at least one day each week. He told Juliette Jowit, environment editor of The Observer, on Sunday, 7 September that meat production accounts for 18 percent of greenhouse gas emissions - 5 percent more than all the world's cars, trains, planes and boats combined. He said, "In terms of immediacy of action and the feasibility of bringing about reductions in a short period of time, it clearly is the most attractive opportunity."
In raising this public debate, Pachauri has also angered the critics, particularly the National Farmers' Union and the meat lobby, but he has again demonstrated that as individuals we have to take personal responsibility for our actions and how they affect the planet. Pastor Don McFarlane, President of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the UK and Ireland points people towards that responsibility. "Genesis chapter one not only gives us the ideal diet of nuts, fruit and grains, it also gives us authority to rule over the planet - in other words, to be good stewards," he stated on Thursday. "Adventists have long been concerned with a balanced lifestyle and diet - concern for the environment is equally a natural part of that picture."
Dr Mark Porter, writing in the Scotsman states, "though a committed omnivore, I would be the first to admit that we now eat far more meat than the body requires or was designed to cope with. And we are paying the price through an increased propensity to conditions such as heart disease and bowel cancer." While cautious that some people can become severely malnourished if they just drop meat altogether and do not work on a balanced diet he can see the advantages. He writes, "Do it properly and the health benefits of cutting out meat are myriad. Studies over the years have shown that vegetarian children grow at similar rates to their meat-eating peers, with at least one study suggesting they are likely to be taller. And adult vegetarians are less likely to be overweight, or develop heart disease, bowel cancer, gallstones, diabetes and high blood pressure."
His words are, in reality, an endorsement of the Adventist run Coronary Health Improvement Programme (CHIP), headed in the UK by BUC Health Ministries director, Sharon Platt-McDonald. She continues to report the health benefits for those who are reducing the amount of meat and processed foods in their diet. She states, "Let us continue to live up to the principles which our church advocates and which research has shown to enhance longevity as we continue to bring a positive witness to the world." That positive witness now even touches the issue of global warming. "Insulate your home, turn the thermostat down, car share, walk more - and eat less meat," she says. "Each one of us can make a difference."
NEWBOLD NOSTALGIA FOR RETIRED WORKERS [Helen Pearson, PRO Newbold College/BUC News]
Around 70 retired ministers and church workers gained an insight into their "alma mata" on Sunday, 7 September as they met with Newbold's new principal, Dr Jane Sabes, at one of their regular retiree fellowships. The retirees enjoy the fellowship that these quarterly meetings provide and the September meeting, led by Pastor Martin Bell, was special as it took them back to Newbold College, the place were most of them had studied.
Dr Sabes shared with the group her vision to improve Newbold's service to the Trans-European Division and to improve community outreach at home. She invited alumni and church members with ideas to come and enjoy a 'free lunch' with her.
Dr Sabes stayed on to meet and mingle with the members of the group and was treated to a taste of 'Newbold past' as Dr Harry Leonard spoke about the history of Sylvia's Garden and the need for further funding for its restoration. Dr Sabes presented all the visitors with an illustrated history of the garden.
Dr John Woodfield, his wit and wisdom seemingly untouched by age, then shared reminiscences of his life as a teacher and showed examples of his painting and carving.
The group welcomed Dr Sabes enthusiastically describing her as 'enthusiastic', 'friendly', 'spiritual' and 'so easy to talk to'. "We didn't have principals who hugged people before!" said Mrs Peggy Vine, a student at Newbold during the early 1940s.
"These meetings are important," says Pastor Alan Hodges, BUC Ministerial Association director. "It gives our former workers an opportunity for fellowship and allows us to appreciate them for the long service they have given to the church." While it is still several years before he officially joins their ranks he notes the pleasure they have in getting together for a meal, reminiscing and sharing together.

EAST ANGLIA TAKES A LESSON IN MARRIAGE SURVIVAL [Claude Lombart]
Nancy Van Pelt is a household name in family life circles in Adventism. With 28 books to her credit, and more to come, over 3,000 seminar presentations around the world, CDs, DVDs, radio programmes and TV shows including an appearance with Dr James Dobson of Focus on the Family, Nancy does not waste a minute when she stands up to talk. She goes straight to the heart of the matter in her own inimitable way. She can hold her audience's rapt attention for up to two hours at a time with no break in between. She seems to know exactly when attention is about to drop.
One of her most effective weapons in her varied arsenal to combat attention fatigue is humour. She is an avid learner of British English. She asked her audiences in East Anglia to teach her to pronounce Ipswich, Norwich and Cambridge, the English way - the three churches where she delighted her audiences three nights this week. With both church members and visitors in attendance she shared the latest knowledge and practical skills in how to meet one another's needs (His and Hers), how to communicate better, and how sex, love and lasting relationships can develop within marriage.
Commenting on her no-nonsense approach, well grounded in Biblical principles, one member said: "We never hear such useful and helpful information on such a wide range of subjects that impacts our daily lives, teenagers, young and old, being preached or talked about in our churches." Someone else said, "It's about time our church gets real. After all we live in the real world. We are all struggling with real issues that affect our quality of life. Nancy is exceptional in the way she addresses them head on. She is truly amazing. We wish we could hear all of her 50 seminars."
Previously Nancy spoke to 150 singles at Wimbledon church in London and this weekend has appointments in the Reading area before heading back to the United States. Nancy's books are available from the Adventist Book Centre (01476 539 900) and an audio recording of her 50 minute presentation at Press Open day is available from the picture gallery on the BUC website: <

ADRA ASSISTANCE IN UKRAINE/MEXICO [Bert Smit/BUC News]
ADRA-UK is assisting in the Ukraine as part of a network emergency relief response. The Ukraine suffered from a severe flood caused by incessant rains in July. According to latest information, there were 862 towns and 45,284 houses flooded in Ivano-Frankivsk, Vinnytsia, Chernivtsy, Zakarpattya and Ternopil Oblasts. Many roads and bridges were destroyed. The exact number of personnel who have died as a result of the floods is currently 39.
Despite the fact that the level of water has dropped, the situation in many affected regions of Western Ukraine remains critical. The total damage of flood in Western Ukraine exceeds US$800 million, according to a Government declaration.
ADRA is distributing food baskets and hygiene kits for 1,178 of the most affected households in the Kostychany, Mamalyga and Dranythja villages (Novoselytsja District, Chernivtsy region) benefiting 4,712 persons.
The food baskets include 3kg of rice, 3kg of beans, 3kg of sugar, 6kg of flour, 3kg of buckwheat, three bottles of vegetable oil, and three cans of canned fish. The total caloric value of this food supply will be enough for each household for about two weeks.
The response is part of an ADRA Network intervention. Donations to help the relief effort in the Ukraine are welcome. Please visit our website <
http://adra.org.uk> to donate.
With the tropical storm season underway ADRA is also providing support for families affected by Tropical Storm Julio in the Guaymas and Sonora regions of north-western Mexico. As part of its initial response, ADRA is providing food aid to low-income families struggling to recover from the recent disaster.
Further reports on ADRA assistance for parts of the Caribbean will be provided as soon as we have full details.
ADVENTIST ASIAN DAY OF FELLOWSHIP [Ottakal P Chackochen]
Sabbath, 30 August was one of the hottest Sabbaths this year in more than one way! Adventist Asians from different parts of the United Kingdom gathered in Watford at the Stanborough School auditorium for a day of Sabbath celebration, fellowship, and for some good Indian food. It was a time for some long-lost friends to cross each other's paths again. Many exchanged addresses, telephone numbers and email ids; and made arrangements to visit each other.
The Sabbath School was taught by Pastor John Melki. The speaker for the divine hour was Pastor Bertil Wiklander, the President of the Trans-European Division. He spoke about the need for Christian unity based on our love for each other. Music was provided by Sunil Tete, Walter Bhengra and Rajiv Gill. After a delicious meal provided by Stella, Joyce, Raju and Dheeraj, the afternoon saw a musical programme in which the old and the young alike participated. All left with a renewed determination to encourage each other to stay faithful to the Lord.
Next year's meeting is on 29 August at the Stanborough School auditorium. For further details, please contact Pastor O P Chackochen on 07748 417 460/020 8446 8809. There is also a Southern Asia Adventist meeting in Manchester on 11 April 2009. Please contact John Varghese on 07912 697 367/ 01612 759 702.
LATEST MESSENGER FOCUSES ON CREATION DEBATE
As celebrations increase leading up to the 150th anniversary of the publication of the Origin of Species and the bi-centenary of Darwin's birth, the latest edition of the Messenger focuses on an alternative perspective to that found in much of the secular media. In the lead story, eminent scientist, John Walton claims "God is alive and well!" An inside story focuses on his response to Professor Richard Dawkins and his attacks on religious belief. The front page also celebrates dinosaurs with the children and sees how they fit in with Genesis and creation.
The Messenger, the official journal of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the UK and Ireland, can now be found online at <
www.adventistnews.org.uk/messenger>.
More on the Darwin debate can be found in a special edition of Focus Magazine and in a series of specially commissioned lectures to be held in Shrewsbury, Darwin's birthplace, starting on Tuesday, 14 October. Pastor Roger Neal states, "Shrewsbury is at the forefront of the Darwin Celebrations as it was his birthplace. It is appropriate for a Christian voice to be heard and we will be sharing under the theme, 'In the beginning, God'". See our Coming Events page for more details: <
