NEWBOLD EMPHASIS AT WELSH MISSION DAY OF FELLOWSHIP

Warm sunshine and azure skies greeted the 200 or so visitors to the Welsh Mission Day of Fellowship in Llandrindod Wells on Sabbath, 27 September. Once again the meetings were held at the Pavilion, the largest conference venue in mid-Wales where lunch was enjoyed on the terraces and in the gardens outside.

The emphasis for this year's Day of Fellowship was on Newbold College, represented by Dr Jane Sabes, Principal; Dr Laurence Turner, Principal Lecturer in Old Testament; and Dr Jean-Claude Verrecchia, Principal Lecturer in New Testament; and two young musicians, Manuel Matos (piano) and Marta Cupertino (violin).

In the morning service Dr Turner retold the story of the image of gold and the fiery furnace, as found in Daniel chapter three. He pointed out the thoroughly Babylonian nature of the image and emphasised the importance of standing in opposition to the Babylonian principles of size, power and conformity. He also referred to the beast of Revelation 13 with its thoroughly Babylonian number of 666, implying that the importance of standing in opposition to Babylonian principles is as relevant today as it was in the time of Nebuchadnezzar.

The afternoon programme turned to the New Testament as Dr Verrecchia challenged us to, "Rejoice: We have a High Priest!" Working from Hebrews chapters 8 to 10 he highlighted the differences between the High Priests of the Old Testament and the High Priest of the New Testament - particularly the fact that the latter did not need to make any sacrifice for Himself because He was the sacrifice.
"The result of Christ's sacrifice is that sin has been annulled," said Dr Verrecchia. "It is not future, it is done. It cannot be repeated."

Dr Jane Sabes, Principal of Newbold College, although previously unknown to most of those in the congregation, made a major impression early on when she took the children's story. Carefully fitting her message to the theme of the day, "Standing out from the crowd", she talked about chameleons and the temptation there is to blend in with our surroundings. In the afternoon Dr Sabes took on a different role as she chaired a question and answer session on Newbold College. In her responses Dr Sabes emphasised the spirituality of the students at Newbold and the unique atmosphere that exists there. Manuel Matos gave a personal testimony of how enjoyable life can be as a Newbold student.

The two new ministers in the Welsh Mission, Pastors David Foster and Jovan Adamovic, were active in the adult and youth Sabbath Schools respectively, and Pastor Jan McKenzie hosted the final programme of the day: a Songs of Praise programme featuring musicians from within the Welsh Mission.

Sadly missed at this year's Day of Fellowship was Pastor Mike Logan, who passed away in August after suffering from a brain tumour. Photos from Mike's time in Wales were shown on the screen and former Welsh Mission President Dr Brian Phillips paid tribute to his ministry, before praying specifically for the members of his family.

Videos of the three main presentations, together with more than 100 photos from the day can be seen on the Welsh Mission website at: <www.adventistwales.org>. A DVD containing all three video presentations can be purchased for £4.50 (including postage) from: "Ministry Media", Tir Silyn, Llangadog, SA19 9HB. JAM AND SCONES FOR SCOTTISH YOUTH [Sonja Eikum]

The UK's most northerly church recently hosted a Scottish Mission Jam and Scones session. On Sabbath, 27 September, Aberdeen church was bursting at the seams on Sabbath afternoon when over 100 young people gathered from all over Scotland to worship God together. Four microphone stands were crowded with eager singers, while a good number of instruments led the worship. They included guitars, mandolins, violins, trumpets, keyboards, a cello and more. A repertoire of traditional hymns, choruses and popular action songs raised the spirits of those who worshipped. It was moving to see over 100 young people praising God and enjoying it. Between sessions there was a good spread of scones, muffins, soup, hot dog rolls, pancakes, swiss rolls etc, which everyone enjoyed.

On behalf of Aberdeen members, Sonja Eikum thanked everyone who made an enormous effort to travel from all over Scotland to sing their hearts out. She said, "God was surely praised. The echoes of their voices where heard in the surrounding area and proved an awesome witnessing tool!" Fourteen-year-old, Chloe Mukisa from Glasgow said, "We had a really great time and also got to know each other better". Mission Youth Sponsor, Pastor Marcel Ghioalda said "This was by far the best attended and attracted the most feedback and enthusiasm from those who participated. It has surely earned its place in our annual calendar of events".

IRISH MISSION WOMEN'S RETREAT

After a couple of years break the Irish Mission held its annual retreat at the Emmaus Centre just outside of Dublin, 12 - 14 September. About 45 ladies came together to experience fellowship and to find and explore their spiritual gifts. They travelled from as far as Coleraine, Cork and good representation from Dublin along with other churches.

Geraldene Farmer, NEC Women's Ministries director, delighted the participants with her presentation style and humour under the theme: "In His Image - For His Purpose". There was great discussion and interaction throughout the sessions with time constantly beating the programme. Worship leader, Edith Samambwa from Portlaoise, supported by Belinda Mapa led in a spontaneous worship style with her making the singing both refreshing and spirit filled. On the Sabbath evening each lady chose a prayer card with the name of another participant on it. They will keep it somewhere special and every time they see the card they can pray for the lady. The social time was a competitive table quiz for those who lasted the distance and stayed up.

Sunday morning came round too soon. The weekend interaction and learning went well with some of the ladies surprised at what they discovered about themselves. Many were refreshed and went back to their churches wanting to use what they had discovered. The word has spread about how good the whole weekend was and a reservation list for next year has already begun!

LONDONDERRY HITS 30

Sabbath, 27 September was a very special day for the growing Londonderry church. Tucked away in the North West of Ireland, the church swelled to capacity to reminisce over the past 30 years. Local members entered the newly refurbished sanctuary with gasps of joy as the completion of the building project had happened only hours before after 11 months of hard work. After many years of vandalism, no heating, rundown toilets and kitchen facilities, the Irish Mission Executive Committee gave the go ahead for the renovation project which was managed by local pastor, Claudiu Popesku.

It began with the instalment of a security fence around the perimeter to keep the vandals out. Mr Joseph Donaldson, a businessman and Belfast member, donated the gates. From there the renovation went on to a complete new heating system, 68 Perspex windows replaced with double glazed ones, new oak kitchen, new toilets and shower room, and painted sanctuary. Instead of having no view to gaze at, now there are the beautiful rolling hills that surround the church visible through the windows.

Pastor David Neal welcomed the congregation and expressed his thanks and joy at the hard work that had been put into getting the building ready for the anniversary. The guest speaker was Pastor Michael Taylor, who was the local pastor at the time when the land was purchased and Maranatha International came and built the church. Messages of celebration were read out from previous pastors and others.

Ann McNally told the story of Londonderry; how one member, Anna Graham would come to church on her own and be the only person to attend and spend the morning praying and reading. Her prayer was that the Lord would send others to worship there. What joy is was for her to attend this Sabbath and see the church filled to capacity with extra chairs down the aisles to accommodate the worshippers. Members from Belfast, Coleraine and Banbridge who were at the official opening came back to join in the celebrations.

In the afternoon we were treated with a video of the history of the church - which will shortly be available on the IM website. This was put together by local member Stan Sleszynski who, with his family moved to the area three years ago from Poland. Ann McNally said that when she was converted to Adventism and arrived at the church with her sister, Mary McCauley, they didn't know how an Adventist church was run. There was no one to show them what to do so they had to get on with it.

Over the past few years one family after another have come to Londonderry and settled. It is a truly international church with nationalities from Africa, Norway, Poland, Australia, Ireland and Canada represented each week. Anna's prayer is still being answered as new people arrive, prepared to contribute to church life and reach out to the community. Another family is about to arrive from South Africa in the New Year. This little church has seen a miracle over 30 years. It offers community, warmth and a lot of craic!

ON THE BATTLEFIELD FOR THE LORD! [Willie Tafadzwa Chinyamurindi]

A mention of the name India to any novice can yield interesting findings; salient themes emerge like "populous", "Ghandi", "Sachin Tendulkar" or even "hot spicy food". However, the nation of India stands as a potential "battlefield for the Lord."

The idea of serving as a missionary in a foreign land makes some cringe resulting in pale faces; to the extent that some would be "non-combatants" and fail to report for duty. However, faithful and answering the call of the "great commander" a group of 40 mostly young people from Ireland, the UK, Serbia, USA, Germany, Austria and Switzerland reported for duty and enlisted on the "battlefield for the Lord."

Between 30 July and 21 August attention focused on the Khammam district of the Andhra Pradesh region of India. The mission was clear and tagged on each "soldiers" heart, "To Tell India of Jesus."

The daily routine included frequent morning devotion and training sessions and preparations for the evening messages. The morale in the camp was one of unity, commitment and zeal for soul winning regardless of the myriad challenges and the threats at stake. We visited the poor, presented a message of hope, shared Bible stories with the little children and finally, gave practical health lectures.

The British Union Conference was well represented in this army with a quarter of the missionaries residing in Ireland and the United Kingdom. One of the enlisted combatants was Vanessa Sutherland-Lord who attends the Croydon church. Vanessa worked at the Banapuram village where there was a huge presence of Hindu fundamentalists opposed to Hindus converting to Christianity. For Vanessa the India mission project was an eye-opener, "It was humbling to realise how much I take for granted and how generous people were with the little that they had. It inspired me to want to sacrifice more for others but also to take full advantage of the opportunities that God will open before me." At Vanessa's site alone 194 baptisms were conducted.

In total 43 villages were targeted, 40 mostly young people enlisted, 1,200 Telugu Bibles shared and 1,049 souls baptised. It was a great joy to also see Hindus, Muslims and Hindu priests come to accept the great commander Jesus. For more information visit: <www.europe4jesus.net>.

FRIENDSHIP RETREAT AT CHAPEL PORTH [Anita Kelman and Helen Pearson]

Perfect postcard weather favoured 90 staff and students of Newbold College, Bracknell, as they gathered in caravans and tents at Chapel Porth Campsite on the northern coast of Cornwall for the sunniest weekend in September.

Friendship was the theme for this weekend, the tenth of its kind, organised by Student Services to encourage staff and students to get to know each other at the beginning of the school year. On Friday afternoon, a few hardy souls braved the chilly Atlantic for a quick dip. Others were content to sit on the beach and simply admire the spectacular views. More vans and cars full of people arrived through the evening ensuring the hall was full for opening Sabbath. Geert Tap shared some Celtic wisdom and prayers appropriate in this land of Celts. An impromptu 'singspiration' continued into the night.

On Sabbath morning, early risers joined Pastor Patrick Lupon for worship on the beach before breakfast. On both Friday evening and Sabbath morning, a variety of speakers, including students Joachim Telfer, Sam Gungaloo and Dan Surridge shared testimonies and insights into friendship. Fourth generation student, Dan Surridge, spoke about his long family association with Newbold College and how the friendships formed at Newbold by his great-grandparents, grandparents, parents, and uncles resulted in lifetime bonds. "Go out there and find friends," he said! Sabbath morning worship concluded with singing songs in the sun and making friendship bracelets as gifts for new and old friends.

The Sabbath afternoon excursion to Perranporth beach gave everyone an opportunity to sunbathe, walk, make sand sculptures on the theme of friendship and enjoy the cool water.

Back at camp, as the fiery crimson sun sank into the ocean, campers climbed the cliffs to close the Sabbath day. The worship continued until the first stars appeared in the clear night sky. No retreat would be complete without the traditional huddle around the bonfire to toast marshmallows and drink hot chocolate. "From early morning beach worship to late night UNO games, strangers became friends and friends became mates," said one participant.

Newbold College cashier Sean Fuller came on the retreat for the first time. "My wife and I really enjoyed walking on the beach and seeing the waterfall. Next time we are going to arrive earlier so we don't miss out on anything." Dean of Students Henrik Jorgensen, veteran of such retreats said, "This was the best ever!" WOMAN ON A MISSION [Victor Samwinga]

Travelling 200 miles plus when there is a Met office forecast for torrential rain may not be everyone's idea of mission. But Beulah Plunkett, a woman on a mission, braved the predicted treacherous weather, which recently caused mayhem in Newcastle and surrounding areas, with a clear vision to encourage members, through Sabbath School, to prepare for God's return. Her ultimate mission, she told members, is for churches to work towards having each member "study God's word daily, live God's word daily and teach God's word readily".

Beulah's visit to Newcastle on the first Sabbath of September meant that Newcastle church became the first church to be formally visited by the new North England Conference Sabbath School director. Beulah's morning sermon challenged the listeners to make certain that their attitude was one with God. Attitude, which she said, comprises feelings, thoughts and behaviour, is key in the Christian experience. We may not control our circumstances but we can certainly choose the right attitude. A fragmented attitude leads to an inconsistent and ineffective Christian witness and believers do well to constantly pray for God to grant them a consistency of feelings, thoughts and behaviour.

Beulah, an experienced educator, conducted an afternoon training workshop, sharing practical tips on how to enhance the Sabbath School experience. She focused on principles of adult learning with different styles and effective methods for meeting the needs of people with varying learning preferences. Key to her presentation was the need for Sabbath School teachers to take time to understand their class members as well as 'take risks' to vary their teaching methods so as to cater for the differing needs of learners. "Prepare, prepare, prepare and you will never go wrong as a class teacher", she said.

The audience clearly loved the presentation, the various group activities and feedback sessions. Newcastle superintendent, Girlie-Mae Andrada was glad that Sabbath School teachers had a great introduction to effective learning and teaching. She now hopes to see some of the ideas in action being tried by the team of teachers and superintendents.
