ROCHDALE: PLANTING FOR SUCCESS [BUC News/NEC Communicator]

The local Rochdale Observer headlined it, "Praising church's return". It took prayer and commitment, but following a 20 year gap, the Seventh-day Adventist church returned to Rochdale on Sabbath, 4 October. The Rochdale Observer reported that "more than 50 people from the local community attended the celebration" which church elder, Irvin Reid, described as "a pleasing and great start to our time here".

Pastor Mike Simpson, Personal Ministries director for the North England Conference joined the 20 charter members for the new group. Under the theme, 'the love of God' he challenged the members to "demonstrate God's love practically in the community thereby opening hearts to accept God's word". That was in evidence on the day as Ken, a local visitor, was presented with a cake to celebrate his 87th birthday.

Steve Okelo, Associate Treasurer for the British Union Conference attended the day and reported that he was thrilled by the gripping stories of how God has led in their desire to plant a church. He told BUC News, "the members are very friendly and totally dedicated to the work of reaching out into the community. They already have two individuals who have showed strong desire for baptism as soon as the church is able to organise one."

Reflecting on the day Irvin Reid told the Rochdale Observer, "the open day was an excellent way to mark our return and some of the local community seemed to enjoy our Bible study session because they had a chance to ask questions about our group."

The group now meet every Sabbath at the Spotland and Falinge Community Centre in Spotland Road, Rochdale and welcome friends and visitors. They are also continuing to follow up evangelistic interests from the community by running a weekly Wednesday evening Bible and fellowship group.

GREENWICH CHURCH JOINS STREET PARTY AND FUN RUN [Kevin Johns]

It was a surprisingly warm sunny afternoon on Sabbath, 20 September as dressed in distinctive T-shirts, the Greenwich Youth Choir joined the local community for their street party. The party is a new initiative by the local residents with the first street party taking place last year. It was such a success that the residents decided to make it an annual event for the community.

The aim of the street party is simply to "get to know your neighbour" so people came out of their homes and into the street, which had been blocked off for the occasion, and just had fun making new friends. It was an opportunity for the neighbourhood to get to know the people who attend Greenwich church and for us to know them. It was not an event to give out any literature, just simply an opportunity to make some new friends as the choir sang several gospel songs.

It brought a refreshing change to our Sabbath programme and saw young people excited and enthusiastic about going out into the streets to present Christ to the Community. It has created a platform on which we can build stronger friendships with our neighbours.

Community is becoming increasingly important for the Greenwich congregation. The next day, Sunday, 21 September Greenwich and the Adventist Community Fellowship church (formerly Eltham and Mottingham,) joined The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) in their annual sponsored walk and run on Greenwich Park. Thousands of people gave up their Sunday to take part in this event. Some had come prepared to run the ten mile course while others had come, with their pets, to walk 5 miles.

Scattered around the bandstand were several tents promoting the work of JDRF, registering walkers and runners, preparing food and drink and providing activities for the children. Everyone was given promotional gift bags and as many promotional balloons as they wanted.

The JDRF were so excited that a local church wanted to be involved with their work that they requested that the Greenwich Seventh-day Adventist Youth Choir open the event for them. They sang at the bandstand on Greenwich Park for 40 minutes before an audience of approximately 3,000 using a variety of songs encouraging audience participation. This really set the atmosphere for the event.

Several young people from both Greenwich and the Adventist Community Fellowship church took part in the run while others took a more leisurely walk. The air was filled with laughter and excitement as everyone got underway. People who had never met previously were chatting to one another as they walked. Others, representing different organisations, wore T-shirts stating who they represented. Marshalls were placed along the route to make sure everyone was safe and provided walkers and runners with water and bananas.

The walk and run was eventually completed successfully by all and in recognition of our achievement everyone was given a medal, everyone was a winner! Many of our members were not able to take part in the event physically but they sponsored those who did.
A date is being planned to invite a JDRF representative to come to Greenwich church where a cheque will be presented for all the monies raised. Thanks go to church member, Margaret Johns, for leading in an initiative which has resulted in the church helping to make a real difference in the community.

A selection of photos from the two days can be seen in the BUC picture gallery: <www.adventist.org.uk>.

CAN YOU TRUST HIM? [Anita Kelman & Helen Pearson]

Trusting human beings is not the easiest skill to learn. Trusting God can be even more difficult! As September merged into October, Newbold students and staff learned more about trusting God during a week of spiritual emphasis.

A wide variety of worship options were available on campus during the week, including 'Morning Breeze' - a 15-minute worship before classes and, at the close of the day, a variety of challenging and spiritually diverse programmes. A range of interactive activities including craftwork, film clips, musical items, testimonies, prayers and illustrations helped to make worship a meaningful and thought-provoking experience. A third opportunity for spiritual development was 'Just Prayer,' a short time in the evening where people simply came together to support and pray for each other. Tastefully decorated, the Student Centre became a haven of trust. A large wooden cross reminded everyone of Christ's sacrifice for sinners.

Head of Social and Spiritual Activities Geert Tap stated: "We chose the theme of Trust as the follow up after we opened the year by thinking of 'Friendship' at the College retreat in Cornwall. To become real friends, trust is essential. At the same time being part of the Newbold Community again 'trust' is an important ingredient which either breaks or makes a community."

To encourage participants to think about their spiritual journeys, the organising team had invited MA Theology student, Patty Miranda to arrange a labyrinth* - a mini spiritual journey in Salisbury Hall. In candlelight and against a background of tranquil music, the path led individual seekers on a spiritual journey where they encountered music, meditation, art, media and symbolic activities at interactive stations. Audio prompting challenged participants to rethink their relationship with themselves, other people, the planet, and God.

Albanian MA student Ermira Kollarja was moved by her labyrinth experience. She said "It was beautiful. I cried three times. When I dropped the stone into the water, it felt like Jesus was beside me lifting the burdens from my shoulders. It was so real."

The Monday evening craft session encouraged students to use paint, pens and plasticine to illustrate what trust means to them as individuals.

Licence in Theology student Marko Rasic spoke on Wednesday evening about life being similar to a stone that gets heavier as more stress and problems are added. He challenged the students to trust God in all situations even when life seems out of control. He said "let go of your anger, your hurt, and your fears. Make a decision to leave your stone at the foot of Jesus Christ. He is able to take the burdens of life. He is able to take all your stones."

Newbold church senior pastor Patrick Johnson spoke on Thursday evening. He suggested that it is not only we who should be trusting God but it is God who expects us to be trustworthy. We are entrusted to share the gospel message to others. He challenged the students to be trustworthy in all their dealings with friends, family and colleagues. The week concluded on Friday evening with an agape supper for staff and students in the Church Centre.

The Week of Spiritual Emphasis is held each semester and is designed to encourage students and staff to slow down and reflect on their spiritual journey with God. Geert Tap says it is a very important week in the college calendar. "It may be the first time a new student has been involved in a week like this and we hope that it will be a catalyst for the beginning of a new life in Christ."

*The Labyrinth initiative was originally created by Youth for Christ; a Billy Graham founded Christian charity.

ROTHERHAM: ONE YEAR OLD [Victor Marshall]

On Sabbath, 4 October, the Heavenly Melodies Choir from Sheffield Burngreave Seventh-day Adventist church descended on the Rotherham church plant to join us in celebrating our first anniversary. As the members of the choir conducted the inspiring Sabbath School, the entire choir ministered powerfully through a variety of songs.

In September 2007, Pastor Victor Marshall, along with some twenty members from Doncaster and Sheffield Burngreave, officially set up a church in Rotherham. One year later, Rotherham's children sang their hearts out as they blessed the congregation with 'Tis so sweet to Trust in Jesus' and 'This Little Light of Mine'. Both the Heavenly Melodies Choir and the speaker for the day, Pastor Marshall ministered on the theme, 'We are One'. The speaker reminded us that members of the early church in Acts were able to sell their property at various times, because the believers were of the same mind. In his sermon, he reminded the congregation of the economic crisis presently sweeping the world and therefore emphasised to the congregation that since Jesus' coming is very near we need to be one.

In the afternoon, many of the worshippers shared testimonies of how the Lord had intervened in their lives, how He protected them from accidents and in moments of need, how God opened doors for them. The testimonies blended with more music from the Heavenly Melodies Choir and Rotherham's children. In his message for the evening, Pastor Marshall encouraged the members to press on, looking forward to the prize of eternal life. What a day of rejoicing to see the church in Rotherham revived. We praise our Heavenly Father!

Rotherham church plant meets each Sabbath at the Mowbray Gardens Community Centre, Mowbray Street, Eastwood, Rotherham, S65 2UH.

LOTZ ON REPENTANCE [Helen Pearson, PRO Newbold College]

The 2008 Beach Lecture had a provocative question in its title: 'Repentance: Is it the path to mission and unity?' 'Yes' was the clear and resounding answer from the guest lecturer, Dr Denton Lotz, General Secretary Emeritus of the Baptist World Alliance, as he addressed the audience of staff, students, and church members in Moor Close Chapel at Newbold College.

Dr Lotz's wide-ranging lecture began with an exposition of the story of the reconciliation of Jacob and Esau followed by a look at God's call to ancient Israel to repent as a prerequisite to the healing of their land. He talked about the New Testament calls to repent addressed not only to individuals but to cities and nations and completed his biblical survey in Revelation with the admonition to the church at Ephesus, 'Repent and do your first works'. 'Forgiveness and reconciliation,' he said, 'are a biblical imperative.'

More contemporary sources were the focus of the second half of the lecture as Dr Lotz quoted wisdom about reconciliation from the psychiatrist, Paul Tournier, the postwar Stuttgart Declaration of Repentance, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa. Modern prophetic insights from Abraham Lincoln, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Martin Luther King and George Carey focused on the necessity for repentance both as a cathartic prerequisite for individual and national reconciliation and for the development of the Kingdom of God. Dr Lotz focused particularly on corporate repentance within the Church with regard to racism and called on western missionaries to give up their colonial activities and turn to a theology of repentance. 'The day of Christianity in the southern hemisphere is dawning,' he said. And he asked another significant question: 'Are western churches prepared to be re-evangelized by people to whom they sent missionaries in the first place?

A lively half hour of questions followed the lecture. Participants raised discussions on, among other things, the election of Barack Obama as a national act of repentance, a discussion of the difficulty of repentance, and a decline in its place in liturgy and preaching. 'Do contemporary Christians want faith without repentance?' asked one participant. 'We're telling the world to repent but they don't see us repenting,' concluded Dr Lotz.

The Beach Lecture is an annual autumn event at Newbold College that aims to build bridges between the College and other Christians. The event is financed by an endowment from Dr Bert Beach, a former member of the Newbold College Board, and his wife Eliane in memory of W R Beach, a former Secretary at the World Headquarters of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. More details and pictures are available at <www.newbold.ac.uk>.

BUC SERVER OFF-LINE NEXT WEEK

The only certain thing about modern technology is that it will break down! It is almost five years since the BUC installed its first server, providing an email service, corporate networking and backup and storage facilities. Since then the increase in electronic media and communication in the office means that the current server is too small and is struggling to cope with the needs of the 21st century world. A brand new server will therefore be installed in the office on Tuesday 14 and Wednesday 15 October. During that period there will be disruption to the email service and the Adventist Discovery Centre, which relies heavily on the server, will not process data as per normal. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience this may cause while the system is upgraded. The BUC website, <www.adventist.org.uk>, will continue to function as normal.
