We had that last sabbath. Dr. Erwin Gane gave a very Biblical sermon on relationships and marriage. It was awesome. He was very forthright in saying God intended sex as a blessing between a man and woman united in marriage. And also that men should also be subject to their wives, not tyrants. Well, amen to that! He also mentioned one couple that wished to be married by him. The husband wanted "obey" in the vows repeated by the wife. Dr. Gane counseled against it, but the husband insisted. The wife must promise to obey him! They were married with the obedience vow. Dr Gane said he'd hoped the groom had wised up since then. But he gave a very biblical presentation on what Paul means by subjection. (It's not obedience in case anyone's interested). You ought to see him and his wife. They must be both late seventies, and yet still hold hands when they stroll downtown. And they still look at each other like sweethearts.

Since this is day 4 of Chinese New Year, we got a very strange sermon about the strengths of the Rooster (as this is the new year in the Chinese way of counting years) and how that relates to our strengths as a Christian. Really odd, at least from our American perspective. I don't know how meaningful it was to the Chinese--haven't asked my friend yet.
Gong hei fat choy to you!

We are in the middle of an evangelistic series so there was no mention of anything other than the Valentine Banquet on Sunday. K

No marriage, romance or couples in our sermon. The focus was on Mary, Martha and Lazarus and what it means to sit at the feet of Jesus. Lots of scripture.

No mention of Valentine's day in our sermon. It was our pastor's first Sabbath back from vacation, and the sermon was entitled "Where was God in the tsunami?" It was about God's role with regard to disaster's, and the role of the enemy.

Sorry--wouldn't you know it, I don't even know "Happy Sabbath" in Cantonese yet, because everyone says it to me in English! Gong hei fat choy means happy Chinese new year!

I could have told you ahead of time, Jim Bob, that our pastor would not do a sermon that had anything to do with Valentine's Day, but I decided to wait until afterward. I was right - he continued with his series from the book of John. He preached on the woman at the well this week.

Did your pastor say why he chose the passage/topic/theme for that sabbath??

Hey Jimbo,
Is this question an intimation that you believe all such sermons are NFDMTTS? I am already getting ready to differ.

LD
The reason why I posted this thread is I was doing a mini survey to see who was getting sermons from seasonal/holiday catalysts.
Some preachers have no vision of what is goiong on and take their cues for sermon topics only from current events or calendar holidays..
Some call it preaching from cues of the WORLD.
