Club Adventist
Welcome with open arms fellow believers who don’t see things the way you do.
And don’t jump all over them every time they do or say something you don’t agree with
– even when it seems that they are strong on opinions but weak in the faith department.
Remember, they have their own history to deal with. Treat them gently. Romans 14.1: The Message

ADVENTIST STANDS AT THE CHRISTIAN RESOURCES EXHIBITION

From Tuesday to Friday of this week the South England Conference and the Stanborough Press have each been running stands at the Christian Resources Exhibition at Sandown Park in Esher, Surrey. As well as featuring more than 350 exhibitors the CRE offers nearly 100 free lectures on a wide range of subjects including: church sound systems, Christian storytelling, how to reach the sci-fi generation, and the law as it affects clergy and church workers.

Many members and pastors of the Seventh-day Adventist Church have attended the event which is one of the largest commercial Christian exhibitions in the country. SEC President Pastor Don McFarlane commented on the professional look of the SEC stand, and BUC President Pastor Cecil Perry said how pleased he was that the Church was prominent at such an important event.

The South England Conference stand and display was organised by SEC Communication director Catherine Boldeau. "Unlike last year, where the Church exhibited under the name 'South England Conference'," she said, "this year we simply had a sign over the stand marked 'Seventh-day Adventists'. This change from a gentle to a more direct approach was met with mixed reactions. Some people simply looked at the sign above our exhibit and turned their heads in the opposite direction, but others showed a genuine interest in who we are and what we do. One of these was a trainee Anglican priest who knew about the firm stand that Adventists take on the Sabbath. There followed 20 minutes of open and friendly discussion about the beliefs and practices of Seventh-day Adventists, and a little later in the day he even came back to continue the conversation. This cautious but genuinely interested attitude was typical of the reactions of many who came to the stand."

"The Christian Resources Exhibition provides Seventh-day Adventists with a platform to share their philosophy of Jesus Christ with other Christians," she continued. "It is also a fantastic public relations exercise for the Church and it gives us the opportunity to make many new friends and useful contacts".

Sharing the stand with the SEC was ADRA-UK, who displayed a number of posters as well as t-shirts bearing the slogan "End World Poverty". Dr Tony Campolo, renowned sociologist and once religious advisor to President Bill Clinton, made a personal visit to the stand due to his previous connection with ADRA International.

Once again this year SEC staff and volunteers promoted the LIFE.info magazine, handing out hundreds of copies to those passing by. LIFE.info was also promoted on the Stanborough Press stand, together with a number of small devotional gift books. Speaking at the CRE Stanborough Press General Manager Paul Hammond said, "The interest, especially in LIFE.info, was exciting. All but one person who visited the stand while I was there took the magazine".

Another Adventist running a stand at the CRE was businessman Brian Davison who was promoting his company "Exclusive Window Systems Ltd.". Brian has fitted windows in many churches but was keen to point out that the company does many other things as well. "We mainly came here because we are a Christian company and we think that there are many people who are interested in doing business with other Christians," he said.

LIFEDEVELOPMENT LAUNCH AT ST ALBANS

Following a series of training seminars and promotional events LIFEdevelopment was officially recognised as the primary evangelistic approach of the St Albans church on Sabbath 7 May. To mark the launch a special two-hour programme replaced the usual morning church services underlining the message that in today's culture we sometimes need to do things differently.

One such difference is the use of music in worship, and the morning started with more than half an hour of praise and worship from the church's praise team and band. Student missionary Matt Vincent then presented a slot entitled "About Our Neighbours" which outlined the demographic make up of the city of St Albans as well as that of the immediate neighbourhood of the church.

Trans-European Division Communication director Pastor Miroslav Pujic gave the main presentation entitled "Designed to Serve". "Most of our neighbours are unchurched and secular," he said. "They are not interested in God or religion and the only way they will find out about Christ is through us. We are unique in that we are the broadcast screen of God. As previews or trailers sell movies, so we are God's preview." However Pastor Pujic went on to highlight the difficulties that Christians face in even getting to meet secular people in any meaningful way. "LIFEdevelopment is all about making friends, which is the most difficult part of being a witness. We need to get connected with secular people, to listen to them and talk with them, eat with them and meet their needs. We need to win their confidence before we can talk to them about God."

Following Pastor Pujic's presentation a number of members of the St Albans church, led by LIFEdevelopment coordinator Carolyn Schulz, told of the various LIFEdevelopment activities that the church is already involved with. These included three different types of café programme - men's, women's, and youth, as well as an over-50s club and a kids club.

Visiting from the nearby church of Stanborough Park was Ed Hammond who told the congregation a little of the LIFEdevelopment activities that have flourished there since the construction of the Stanborough Centre. These included the very popular Café Blue, various clubs and special meals, and a programme of visiting lecturers.

Concluding the morning local pastor Jonathan Barrett confirmed his support for LIFEdevelopment evangelism. "The old methods just don't work any more with the secular population that we are targeting here in St Albans. If we are going to reach anyone in this sector we have to try new methods of making friends with people and getting them connected with the church." In a final act of commitment Pastor Barrett placed five glasses on a table at the front of the church and invited everyone present, even the visitors, to write their names on a piece of paper and place it in one of the glasses, depending on what LIFEdevelopment activity they would like to get involved with.

LONDON YOUTH FEDERATION TEENS DAY AT WILLESDEN - Naomi Osei

On Sabbath 23 April the Willesden church was packed to capacity as teens from all over London gathered for the London Youth Federation's first ever Teens event. The afternoon and evening programme, entitled "Bridging Da Gap", began with a vibrant session of praise and worship from the London Youth Federation Praise Team. The host for the evening was LYF Teens Representative Luke Whyte, who opened the programme with an ice breaker which highlighted the fact that we often judge people on their outward appearances, and end up being wrong. Thankfully, God looks on the heart.

Performances included the lyrical abilities of James Massiah from Balham, the vocal finesse of Ruth Whyte, and the miming talent of Dannielle Shepherd from Willesden. Guest speakers were Andrew Fuller of Balham, Naomi Osei of Holloway, and LYF President Sacha Gillin of Stratford.

Andrew reminded us that God loves to use leftovers! Even if you feel that you have nothing to offer Him, God can still work through you to do mighty things in His name. David, the little shepherd boy ended up being the King of Israel. He was a 'nobody' and God turned him into a 'somebody'. God can do the same for you.

Naomi highlighted the importance of having and maintaining a relationship with God. Being a Seventh-day Adventist doesn't mean that you're only supposed to have a connection with God on the seventh day. If you can afford Adidas, why buy Four Stripe? In the same way, if you've had the privilege of hearing of the love of God, make sure you get the real deal by making Him real to you.

Sacha is a living testimony that God's love and mercy is unconditional. She shared the way in which God brought her out of a sticky situation unharmed even though she had gone against His will. This illustration reminded the teens that there is no situation you can get into that is too difficult for God to fix. All you have to do is call on Him.

At the end of the programme there was a social time with a prize giveaway and free refreshments. All who attended had a chance to fellowship, make new friends, and discuss the messages they had heard through the day. Being a teen living in these last days is definitely not always easy. The time has come to bridge the gap between us and God. The programme's aim was to encourage the teens to remove anything from their lives that stands between them and God and blocks that vital connection.

If you wish to join the LYF mailing list to receive email notifications of future events that the Federation will be hosting, please send your contact details to: <secretary@londonyouthfed.org.uk> or phone: 07956 688923.

BUC TREASURER VISITS ADRA-UK PROJECT SITES IN PERU

On Tuesday 10 May BUC Treasurer Victor Pilmoor flew to Peru for a ten-day visit of ADRA-UK projects in the country. Altogether he will be visiting three projects - two funded by the UK government's Department for International Development (DFID) and one funded by the European Commission. He will also be reviewing the financial systems of ADRA Peru to ensure compliance with donor requirements.

Victor is in regular contact with the ADRA-UK office and reports that he has already visited the Ministry of Social Health and one of the project sites at the Municipal Office in Lima. He also went to visit the home of one of the beneficiaries of this project and made the following observations: "This lady is living in a room the size of a small English bedroom, but divided into bedroom, kitchen and entrance. She has two kids and has to share a communal tap and toilet in the alley. The kids are on the streets all day, selling, trying to make ends meet. The project aims to get these kids to go to school. In reality what happens is that they go in the morning but after doing street sales until midnight they are too tired to go to school and concentrate."

"The distance from Power to Poverty is short," Victor continued. "We went to Congress and visited the Secretary of State for Women and Children. The government has legislated for the first time in the last two years on the rights of Children and Women, but they do not have the capacity to disseminate the information, ethos and responsibility to make the legislation effective. ADRA achieves this, which is quite impressive."

Speaking this morning from the BUC office ADRA-UK director Raafat Kamal said, "Monday will be an interesting day for Victor as he will be travelling in a four-seater plane into the heart of the Amazon jungle to inspect our EC funded project."

AUSTRIAN GROUP VISITS STANBOROUGH SCHOOL - Lorena Simionescu

On Thursday 28 April Stanborough School's assembly was taken by a visiting Austrian group. Thirty-three students and three staff members, dressed in traditional costumes, sang and presented an outstanding programme consisting of three pieces: "An der schönen, blauen Donau" (On the beautiful, blue Danube), "Sound of Music" and "Edelweiss". Our students were then treated to more Austrian culture and food in the Food Technology classroom - delights such as Sachertorte, Biskuitroulade, Gugelhupf, Mozartkugel and Mozarttaler were tasted by all. Posters decorated the room and presented more information about Vienna's Schönbrunn, Hofburg and the Lipizzaner, Salzburg and other renowned Austrian places.

Mrs Schultschik, the Austrian group leader declared: "We have been looking forward to this trip since the beginning of the year and the children were all excited. Now that we've already been here for five days, I can say that the experience has topped our expectations. People here are very friendly, helpful and have supported us in every aspect. Everyone gave us a warm welcome and we feel really pampered here. The kids not only enjoyed the wonderful sight-seeing trips but they loved the classes they attended with the Stanborough pupils. It was an incredible opportunity for them to get to know people from all over the world, to speak English and to visit some of England's most famous places. They will go home with a wonderful experience for which we are very grateful. Everything was just perfect."

We are glad the visiting group enjoyed the spiritual atmosphere of Stanborough. It is always inspiring for our students to be able to mix with other cultures and to experience God through meeting different nationalities, His unique and varied creation.

TED PRAYER GUIDE. Our prayer theme for the week commencing 15 May is: JESUS IS SERIOUS ABOUT MISSION. Some say that Mel Gibson's movie 'The Passion of Christ' (2004) exaggerated the suffering of Jesus. We won't know whether this is true until we can talk with Jesus about it. But, what is clear from Scripture is this: You cannot view the story of Jesus without seeing that God is serious about what He is doing.

It's a dramatic story. Confronting. Appealing. "This is how much God loved the world: He gave His Son." (John 3:16 Message Bible.) It's an amazing story of good news. Jesus broke the power of sin and death. He ascended to heaven with the promise of His return. But this is where the crunch for us comes. We are now His 'body.' That means - we are to do what He would do if He were still here! (See John 14:12, 13.) Please pray for:

? An un-churched person with whom you will relate 'as Jesus would' today.
? An opportunity to tell someone today of how serious God is about giving life. [Peter Roennfeldt, Ministerial Association & Global Mission director, Trans-European Division]
