Memory Text: Mark 14:36 NIV “<"Abba>, Father," he said, "everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will."”

Sunday, June 5 The Betrayal Plot
Mark 14-3-10 NRSV “3 While he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at the table, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment of nard, and she broke open the jar and poured the ointment on his head. 4 But some were there who said to one another in anger, "Why was the ointment wasted in this way? 5 For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii, and the money given to the poor." And they scolded her. 6 But Jesus said, "Let her alone; why do you trouble her? She has performed a good service for me. 7 For you always have the poor with you, and you can show kindness to them whenever you wish; but you will not always have me. 8 She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for its burial. 9 Truly I tell you, wherever the good news is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in remembrance of her." 10 Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them.”
Mark 14:4 COMMENTARY FAMILY BIBLE NOTES Persons may be in the same society, and yet their hearts be going out towards totally different objects. Mary, in the fervor of love for the Saviour, was anointing him with very precious ointment, while Judas was saying, "Wherefore is this waste?" and preparing to go to his murderers with the question, "What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you?" Surely, "He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats."
John 12:1-8 NKJV “1 ¶ Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was who had been dead, whom He had raised from the dead. 2 There they made Him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with Him. 3 Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil. 4 Then one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s [son], who would betray Him, said, 5 "Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" 6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it. 7 But Jesus said, "Let her alone; she has kept this for the day of My burial. 8 "For the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always."”
Mark 8:34 MKJV “And calling near the crowd with His disciples, He said to them, Whoever will come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.”

Monday, June 6 The Last Supper
Mark 14:12-26 MKJV “12 ¶ And the first day of Unleavened [Bread], when they killed the passover, His disciples said to Him, Where do You desire that we go and prepare that You may eat the passover? 13 And He sent out two of His disciples and said to them, Go into the city, and there you shall meet a man bearing a pitcher of water. Follow him. 14 And wherever he may go in, you say to the housemaster, The Teacher says, Where is the guest room where I shall eat the passover with My disciples? 15 And he will show you a large upper room, furnished [and] prepared. Prepare there for us. 16 And His disciples went out and came into the city and found [it] as He had said to them. And they made the passover ready. 17 And in the evening He came with the Twelve. 18 And as they reclined and ate, Jesus said, Truly I say to you, One of you will betray Me, the [one] eating with Me. 19 And they began to be grieved, and to say to Him one by one, Not at all I, [is it]? And another said, Not at all I, [is it]? 20 And answering He said to them, [It is] one of the Twelve, the [one] dipping with Me in the dish. 21 The Son of man indeed goes, as it has been written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! It were good for that man if he had never been born. 22 And [as] they ate, Jesus took a loaf and blessed and broke [it], and He gave to them and said, Take, eat; this is My body. 23 And taking the cup, giving thanks, He gave to them. And they all drank out of it. 24 And He said to them, This is My blood of the New Covenant, which is poured out for many. 25 Truly I say to you, I will no more drink of the fruit of the vine until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God. 26 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.”
Mark 14:13 COMMENTARY BY ADAM CLARKE This man was employed in carrying home the water which was to be used for baking the unleavened bread on the following day; for on that day it was not lawful to carry any: hence they were obliged to fetch it on the preceding evening.
Mark 14:20 COMMENTARY BY ADAM CLARKE In the east, persons never eat together from one dish, except when a strong attachment subsists between two or more persons of the same caste; in such a case one invites another to come and sit by him and eat from the same dish.

Tuesday, June 7 Peter’s Failure
Mark 14:27-31 KJ21 “27 And Jesus said unto them, "All ye shall be offended because of Me this night, for it is written: ‘I will smite the Shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.’ 28 But after I have arisen, I will go before you into Galilee." 29 But Peter said unto Him, "Although all shall be offended, yet will I not." 30 And Jesus said unto him, "Verily I say unto thee that this day, even in this night, before the cock crows twice, thou shalt deny Me thrice." 31 But Peter spoke the more vehemently, "If I should die with Thee, I will not deny Thee in any way." Likewise also said they all.”
Mark 14:66-72 KJ21 “66 ¶ And as Peter was below in the courtyard, there came one of the maids of the high priest. 67 And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him and said, "And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth." 68 But he denied it, saying, "I know not, neither understand I what thou sayest." And he went out into the porch, and the cock crowed. 69 And a maid saw him again and began to say to those who stood by, "This is one of them." 70 And he denied it again. And a little after, those who stood by said again to Peter, "Surely thou art one of them, for thou art a Galilean, and thy speech agreeth thereto." 71 But he began to curse and to swear, saying, "I know not this man of whom ye speak!" 72 And the second time the cock crowed. And Peter called to mind the words that Jesus had said unto him: "Before the cock crows twice, thou shalt deny Me thrice." And when he thought thereon, he wept.”
Psalm 56:1-3 NKJV “1 ¶ <> Be merciful to me, O God, for man would swallow me up; Fighting all day he oppresses me. 2 My enemies would hound [me] all day, For [there are] many who fight against me, O Most High. 3 Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You.”
Psalm 119:28 NKJV “My soul melts from heaviness; Strengthen me according to Your word.”
Luke 18:13 NKJV “"And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise [his] eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’”
2 Corinthians 12:9-10 MKJV “9 And He said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may overshadow me. 10 Therefore I am pleased in weaknesses, in insults, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am powerful.”
Philippines 4:13 MKJV “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Wednesday, June 8 Abba!
Mark 14:32-42 God’s Word to the Nations “32 ¶ Then they came to a place called Gethsemane. He said to his disciples, "Stay here while I pray." 33 He took Peter, James, and John with him and began to feel distressed and anguished. 34 He said to them, "My anguish is so great that I feel as if I’m dying. Wait here, and stay awake." 35 After walking a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if it were possible he might not have to suffer what was ahead of him. 36 He said, "Abba! Father! You can do anything. Take this cup of suffering away from me. But let your will be done rather than mine." 37 He went back and found them asleep. He said to Peter, "Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn’t you stay awake for one hour? 38 Stay awake, and pray that you won’t be tempted. You want to do what’s right, but you’re weak." 39 He went away again and prayed the same prayer as before. 40 He found them asleep because they couldn’t keep their eyes open. They didn’t even know what they should say to him. 41 He came back a third time and said to them, "You might as well sleep now. It’s all over. The time has come for the Son of Man to be handed over to sinners. 42 Get up! Let’s go! The one who is betraying me is near."”
Romans 8:15 MKJV “For you have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption by which we cry, Abba, Father!”
Galatians 4:6 NKJV “And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!"”

Thursday, June 9 Jesus Arrested
Mark 14:43-52 NLT “43 ¶ And immediately, as he said this, Judas, one of the twelve disciples, arrived with a mob that was armed with swords and clubs. They had been sent out by the leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the other leaders. 44 Judas had given them a prearranged signal: "You will know which one to arrest when I go over and give him the kiss of greeting. Then you can take him away under guard." 45 As soon as they arrived, Judas walked up to Jesus. "Teacher!" he exclaimed, and gave him the kiss. 46 Then the others grabbed Jesus and arrested him. 47 But someone pulled out a sword and slashed off an ear of the high priest’s servant. 48 Jesus asked them, "Am I some dangerous criminal, that you come armed with swords and clubs to arrest me? 49 Why didn’t you arrest me in the Temple? I was there teaching every day. But these things are happening to fulfill what the Scriptures say about me." 50 Meanwhile, all his disciples deserted him and ran away. 51 There was a young man following along behind, clothed only in a linen nightshirt. When the mob tried to grab him, 52 they tore off his clothes, but he escaped and ran away naked.”
Mark 14:51 PEOPLE’S NT COMMENTARY These verses are peculiar to Mark. Some have supposed the "certain young man" to be Mark. This is only conjecture.

Friday, June 10 Further Study
2 Samuel 11:11 NRSV “Uriah said to David, "The ark and Israel and Judah remain in booths; and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are camping in the open field; shall I then go to my house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do such a thing."”
