Memory Text: Mark 15:34 KJV And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
Sunday, June 12 Before the Sanhedrin Mark 14:53-65 KJ21 “53 ¶ And they led Jesus away to the high priest; and with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes. 54 And Peter followed Him afar off, even into the palace of the high priest. And he sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire. 55 And the chief priests and all of the council sought for witness against Jesus to put Him to death, and found none. 56 For many bore false witness against Him, but their witness agreed not together. 57 And there arose certain ones who bore false witness against Him, saying, 58 "We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.’" 59 But neither did their witness agree together. 60 And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, saying, "Answerest thou nothing? What is it which these witness against thee?" 61 But He held His peace and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked Him and said unto Him, "Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?" 62 And Jesus said, "I am; and ye shall see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming in the clouds of heaven." 63 Then the high priest rent his clothes and said, "Why need we any further witnesses? 64 Ye have heard the blasphemy. What think ye?" And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death. 65 And some began to spit on Him, and to cover His face, and to buffet Him, and to say unto Him, "Prophesy!" And the servants struck Him with the palms of their hands.” Matthew 12:2 ESV “But when the Pharisees saw it, they said to him, “Look, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath.”” Matthew 12:24 ESV “But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, “It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this man casts out demons.”” Mark 14:62-64 ESV “62 And Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63 And the high priest tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need? 64 You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they all condemned him as deserving death.” Luke 4:22 God’s Word to the Nations “All the people spoke well of him. They were amazed to hear the gracious words flowing from his lips. They said, "Isn’t this Joseph’s son?"” John 2:19 God’s Word “Jesus replied, "Tear down this temple, and I’ll rebuild it in three days."” John 7:41-42 God’s Word “41 Other people said, "This man is the Messiah." Still other people asked, "How can the Messiah come from Galilee? 42 Doesn’t Scripture say that the Messiah will come from the descendants of David and from the village of Bethlehem, where David lived?"” John 10:33 MKJV “The Jews answered Him, saying, We do not stone you for a good work, but for blasphemy, and because you, being a man, make yourself God.” John 11:48 MKJV “If we let him alone this way, all will believe on him. And the Romans will come and take away both our place and nation.”
Monday, June 13 Pilate and the Religious Leaders Mark 15:1-19 NRSV “1 ¶ As soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. They bound Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate. 2 Pilate asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" He answered him, "You say so." 3 Then the chief priests accused him of many things. 4 Pilate asked him again, "Have you no answer? See how many charges they bring against you." 5 But Jesus made no further reply, so that Pilate was amazed. 6 Now at the festival he used to release a prisoner for them, anyone for whom they asked. 7 Now a man called Barabbas was in prison with the rebels who had committed murder during the insurrection. 8 So the crowd came and began to ask Pilate to do for them according to his custom. 9 Then he answered them, "Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?" 10 For he realized that it was out of jealousy that the chief priests had handed him over. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas for them instead. 12 Pilate spoke to them again, "Then what do you wish me to do with the man you call the King of the Jews?" 13 They shouted back, "Crucify him!" 14 Pilate asked them, "Why, what evil has he done?" But they shouted all the more, "Crucify him!" 15 ¶ So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas for them; and after flogging Jesus, he handed him over to be crucified. 16 Then the soldiers led him into the courtyard of the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters); and they called together the whole cohort. 17 And they clothed him in a purple cloak; and after twisting some thorns into a crown, they put it on him. 18 And they began saluting him, "Hail, King of the Jews!" 19 They struck his head with a reed, spat upon him, and knelt down in homage to him.” John 19:11 20th Century NT “"You would have no power over me at all," answered Jesus, "if it had not been given you from above; and, therefore, the man who betrayed me to you is guilty of the greater sin."” Ecclesiastes 12:14 NKJV “For God will bring every work into judgment, Including every secret thing, Whether good or evil.” Romans 3:6 William Tyndale NT “God forbid. For how then shall God judge the world?”
Tuesday, June 14 Golgotha Mark 15:16-37 NLT “16 The soldiers took him into their headquarters and called out the entire battalion. 17 They dressed him in a purple robe and made a crown of long, sharp thorns and put it on his head. 18 Then they saluted, yelling, "Hail! King of the Jews!" 19 And they beat him on the head with a stick, spit on him, and dropped to their knees in mock worship. 20 When they were finally tired of mocking him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him again. Then they led him away to be crucified. 21 A man named Simon, who was from Cyrene, was coming in from the country just then, and they forced him to carry Jesus’ cross. (Simon is the father of Alexander and Rufus.) 22 ¶ And they brought Jesus to a place called Golgotha (which means Skull Hill). 23 They offered him wine drugged with myrrh, but he refused it. 24 Then they nailed him to the cross. They gambled for his clothes, throwing dice to decide who would get them. 25 It was nine o’clock in the morning when the crucifixion took place. 26 A signboard was fastened to the cross above Jesus’ head, announcing the charge against him. It read: "The King of the Jews." 27 Two criminals were crucified with him, their crosses on either side of his. 28 29 And the people passing by shouted abuse, shaking their heads in mockery. "Ha! Look at you now!" they yelled at him. "You can destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days, can you? 30 Well then, save yourself and come down from the cross!" 31 The leading priests and teachers of religious law also mocked Jesus. "He saved others," they scoffed, "but he can’t save himself! 32 Let this Messiah, this king of Israel, come down from the cross so we can see it and believe him!" Even the two criminals who were being crucified with Jesus ridiculed him. 33 ¶ At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock. 34 Then, at that time Jesus called out with a loud voice, "[Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?]" which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" 35 Some of the bystanders misunderstood and thought he was calling for the prophet Elijah. 36 One of them ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, holding it up to him on a stick so he could drink. "Leave him alone. Let’s see whether Elijah will come and take him down!" he said. 37 Then Jesus uttered another loud cry and breathed his last.” Isaiah 53:12 NKJV “Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.” John 1:29 -- Simple English “The next day, John saw Jesus coming toward him. John said, ``Look, God's Lamb who will take away the world's sin!” Galatians 3:13 -- Simple English “The law put us under condemnation, but Christ took that condemnation away. He changed places with us; he put himself under that condemnation. It is written, ‘When a person's body is hung on a tree, the person has been condemned.’ “ Hebrews 9:28 -- Simple English “In the same way, Christ was sacrificed once for all time to take away the sins of many people. Christ again. Why? Not to get rid of sin, but to save the people who are waiting for him. They will see him.” 1 Peter 2:24 -- Simple English “In his body he carried our sins on the wooden cross. He wants us to quit sinning and live right. His wounds were used to heal us.”
Wednesday, June 15 The Meaning of Calvary Isaiah 53 KJV “1 ¶ Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? 2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, [there is] no beauty that we should desire him. 3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were [our] faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 ¶ Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But he [was] wounded for our transgressions, [he was] bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace [was] upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. 8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. 9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither [was any] deceit in his mouth. 10 ¶ Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put [him] to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see [his] seed, he shall prolong [his] days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. 11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, [and] shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore will I divide him [a portion] with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.”
Thursday, June 16 The Death of Jesus Mark 15:33-41 NKJV “33 ¶ Now when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" which is translated, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" 35 Some of those who stood by, when they heard [that], said, "Look, He is calling for Elijah!" 36 Then someone ran and filled a sponge full of sour wine, put [it] on a reed, and offered [it] to Him to drink, saying, "Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to take Him down." 37 And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and breathed His last. 38 Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 So when the centurion, who stood opposite Him, saw that He cried out like this and breathed His last, he said, "Truly this Man was the Son of God!" 40 There were also women looking on from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the Less and of Joses, and Salome, 41 who also followed Him and ministered to Him when He was in Galilee, and many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.” John 1:1-2 NIV “1 ¶ In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning.” Genesis 1:26 -- Living Bible “Then God said, ‘Let us make a man --someone like ourselves, to be the master of all life upon the earth and in the skies and in the seas.'’ “ Genesis 3:22 -- New American “Then the LORD God said: ‘See! The man has become like one of us, knowing what is good and what is bad! Therefore, he must not be allowed to put out his hand to take fruit from the tree of life also, and thus eat of it and live forever.’ “ John 10:30 -- New King James “‘I and My Father are one.'’ “
Friday, June 17 Further Study Ellen G. White, Desire of Ages , p. 756 [when Jesus died] – “Never before had the earth witnessed such a scene. The multitude stood paralyzed, and with bated breath gazed upon the Saviour. Again darkness settled upon the earth, and a hoarse rumbling, like heavy thunder, was heard. There was a violent earthquake. The people were shaken together in heaps. The wildest confusion and consternation ensued. In the surrounding mountains, rocks were rent asunder, and went crashing down into the plains. Sepulchers were broken open, and the dead were cast out of their tombs. Creation seemed to be shivering to atoms. Priests, rulers, soldiers, executioners, and people, mute with terror, lay prostrate upon the ground.
