It seems like an unusual connection, but the water and wine at the wedding feast symbolizes the baptism and blood of Jesus. Baptism is a symbolic cleansing from defilement; the blood would symbolize his death, I presume. Drinking his blood symbolically would mean becoming blood brothers, a very close relationship. Becoming a blood-brother/sister of Christ would be a great honor and a source of power to resist our evil inclinations.

Maybe after leaving his widowed mother and the carpenter shop, Jesus provided for his mother in a similar way that oil, fish, and bread replicated. After he was gone from this world, his disciple John then took care of her needs. If he was providing her food so she wouldn't have to beg while he was on the road, she knew he could make something out of nothing, or out of something else.
