1 Kings 2:10- "Then David rested with his fathers and was buried in the City of David"
It was the normal custom to bury the dead outside the cities, so this was a rarity.
It was a mark of high honour for the remains of the departed king to be buried within the city walls of the City of David, the stronghold of Zion.
Solomon afterward was likewise buried here (1 Ki.11:43), as well as Ahaz, though he was not buried in the tomb of the kings (2 Chron.28:27). His son Hezekiah ended up "on the hill where the tombs of David's descendants are," or in the KJV "in the chiefest of the sepulchres of the sons of David" (2 Chron. 32:33).
Manasseh, who succeeded Hezekiah, and his son Amon, were both buried in Jerusalem, "in the garden of Uzza" (2 Ki.21:18)
The location of the tomb of David was known in apostolic times (Acts 2:29). This place is stilll pointedout as being on the southern hill of Jerusalem, commonly called Mt. Zion, under the mosque of David. Some believe, however, that the Tomb of David is actually located several hundred yards east of the traditional site.
