LIFE DEVELOPMENT DVDS NOW AVAILABLE - ANR
After months of work the "Evidence" and "Mind the Gap" DVD sets, together with the 261-page "Mind the Gap Study Guide", are now available. The DVDs, which were recorded at Newbold College and originally shown on the Hope Channel, have had subtitles added in fourteen different languages in order to reach a wide international audience. Both the "Evidence" and "Mind the Gap" series feature Pastor Dwight Nelson and cover a number of issues in a style designed to appeal to a secular, postmodern audience. "Evidence" discusses biblical values and "Mind the Gap" focuses on the basics of Christianity.
These resources, along with the LIFE.info magazine, have been prepared and produced as part of the LIFEdevelopment.info strategy, which is sponsored by the British Union and supported by the Trans-European Division. With the release of the DVDs the resources for the first three levels of this seven level project are complete.
"I cannot find words to express my satisfaction and gratitude for the really excellent LIFEdevelopment material that has now been produced" said Dr Bertil Wiklander, President of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the Trans-European region. "It goes beyond my expectations. It communicates in today's language and is deeply spiritual and geared to bring people to Christ. The multi-lingual components open the perspective to a Division-wide use." He continued, "No pastor or active lay person will want to be without this tool for evangelism. A special thanks to the British Union and their leader, Pastor Perry, for the vision and commitment to this development. I believe the world Church will discover this tool and find that it has great potential. I wish that in the Trans-European Division, we will find ways of integrating these tools with other emphases that we are making in evangelism. What matters is that God gives growth, not who or what is used in the sowing process."
Encouraging reports are being received. LDi groups are growing in Britain and twenty-three regular visitors are attending the LIFEdevelopment programmes in the Stanborough Park church. Five LDi groups are meeting in St. Albans, England. Thirteen issues of the LIFE.info magazine have been distributed to churches throughout the British Union with a total print run of 740,000 copies. As LIFE.info is being used to make friends with the unchurched it is proving to be an excellent tool.
BUC President Pastor Cecil Perry says, "We are encouraged by reports received and are pleased to share these exciting resources with our members in UK and Ireland as well as in Europe and other parts of the world. We have invested a lot in the production of these resources, therefore wouldn't it be wonderful as the programmes are shared with secular friends that they will be the means of introducing them to Jesus and a new life in Him."
"Living in a postmodern age really makes a difference in the way people think and approach life" says Miroslav Pujic, LDi executive director. "LIFEdevelopment.info is a disciple-making strategy to reach the emerging postmodern generation. The strategy is based on engaging members in building authentic friendships with unchurched postmodern people in the process of leading them to Jesus Christ and providing hope through support and nurture."
Additional interest in the whole concept of LIFEdevelopment.info has come from Australia, North America, the Middle East and many countries throughout Europe. In one Middle East country 50 people have watched the videos of the 'Evidence' in one location and the interest is growing.
The new Evidence and Mind the Gap LIFEdevelopment DVD set can be ordered online for £25 plus postage and packing on the Adventist Resource website at: <www.adventistresource.org.uk>.
ADRA SRI LANKA INITIATES EMERGENCY DENTAL PROJECT
On Thursday 16 June ADRA Sri Lanka signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Healthcare, Nutrition and Uva-Wellassa Development of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, providing the framework for the implementation of an emergency dental project for Ampara district in eastern Sri Lanka.
Jointly funded by ADRA Australia and World Vision Lanka with logistical support from ADRA-UK, the dental project will focus on the population of Pottuvil and Thirukkovil (approximately 80,000 persons) in Ampara district, of whom approximately 107,000 persons remain displaced in over 100 camps following the tsunami. The project will use mobile dental equipment for extractions, capping, filling and treating abscesses, and will include a mixture of Sri Lankan and international dental personnel to promote a mutual exchange of learning and skills.
Dental care before the tsunami was provided by a single dentist operating out of Pottuvil Hospital in southern Ampara, who operated out of a dental surgery with a bare minimum of equipment and supplies. Due to the absolute shortage of equipment and supplies, dental care was provided very rarely by the dental surgeon in Thirukkovil Hospital, and as a result the situation with dental care remained precarious before the tsunami. Following the tsunami, the population of Pottuvil and Thirukkovil remains effectively without dental care. The single surgeon covering the two areas can see between 5-10 persons per day due to the absolute lack of medical consumables and equipment.
Conrad Vine, ADRA Sri Lanka's Acting Country Director, comments that the 'absolute lack of any curative or preventative dental care amongst the children in the 105 camps of Ampara is resulting in considerable human suffering at the individual level. High levels of dental caries, dental abscesses, tooth decay and loss, high diabetes rates and the chewing of betel nuts which leads to oral cancers are all contributing to significant but 'silent' human suffering, and this project is seeking to address the dental needs of the tsunami affected communities and thereby alleviate this suffering.
The project will run until January 2006 after which ADRA and World Vision Lanka will assess the dental situation in the project area and determine future activities.
ADVENTIST MUSICIAN COMMISSIONED TO WRITE MAJOR CHORAL WORK
Adventist composer and musician Alexander Douglas has been commissioned to write a major new choral work as part of the tenth anniversary celebrations of the Manchester Jazz Festival. "Songs of the Heart" is a set of nine pieces which mirror Alexander's own Christian experience. "I have always wanted to make music that represents who I am from a faith perspective," he says. "Even within the secular bastions of jazz my peers have recognised that gospel elements in my playing are driven by more than the fact that I like the sounds of gospel music."
Alexander is best known for his performance in the field of jazz, but for the past seven years he has maintained a professional output as a gospel choral workshop director and is increasingly active in this area. He describes "Songs of the Heart" as sitting "on the jazz-gospel continuum," and draws parallels with the "liturgical jazz" of Duke Ellington's sacred music. "Full-time jazz was never quite what I had envisaged, but opportunities in professional gospel music were limited and jazz eventually became my major means of expression."
In February of this year Alexander took his choir, the New World Voices, to perform the first of the nine pieces of "Songs of the Heart", entitled "Great is the Lord", at St Paul's Cathedral. He reports that it was well received and hopes that the complete work will be similarly enjoyed at the Manchester Jazz Festival.
The concert will take place in Manchester Cathedral at 7.30 pm on Thursday 28 July. Two different choirs will be involved: New World Voices, and the York University based Zamar Gospel Choir. Alexander will accompany the choir at the piano, along with Nathaniel Facey on the alto Saxophone, and guest soprano Jane Liburd. For more information visit: <www.manchesterjazz.com>. Phone: 0161 228 0662.
LIFE DEVELOPMENT DOCTORAL DISSERTATION
On Wednesday 15 June Trans-European Division Communication director Pastor Miroslav Pujic successfully defended his doctoral dissertation, "A Disciple-making Strategy to Reach the Emerging Postmodern Generation", at Newbold College. The defence was chaired by Andrews University professors Bruce Bauer and Rudi Maier and was open to the public. Following a half-hour presentation there were further questions for approximately one hour.
The dissertation was largely based upon Pastor Pujic's experience with the LIFEdevelopment evangelistic strategy which has been the main focus of the British Union Conference's outreach work since 2003.
Speaking earlier this week Pastor Pujic said, "I have learned a lot through this research and have personally benefited from it. A lot of the findings have already been included in the LIFEdevelopment materials and strategy but I hope to make even more of the dissertation available to the Church in the near future. I want to thank the TED officers for letting me do this research and for their visionary leadership. I would also like to thank the leaders of the BUC who agreed to implement the new concepts and invested a great deal of time and money in order to reach the post-modern, secular people in the United Kingdom and Ireland."
Pastor Pujic was one of four British ministers studying on the doctoral programme, the others being Pastors John Ferguson, Michael Hamilton, and Steve Thomas. He will be awarded a DMin (Doctor of Ministry) from Andrews University.
MESSENGER ARCHIVES NOW ON ADVENTIST HISTORY WEBSITE
More than six hundred copies of the Messenger, and its predecessor "The Missionary Worker", dating from 1923 to 1950, have now been made freely available for viewing by the public on the Adventist History website at <www.adventisthistory.org.uk>.
The Messenger archiving project began in 2000 when Dr Roland Karlman of the Ellen G White Research Centre at Newbold College, Bracknell, arranged for Newbold College Library's holdings of the Missionary Worker and the Messenger to be digitally scanned. In May 2005 the Centre gave permission for the scans to be placed on the Adventist History site and over the last couple of weeks the entire collection has been uploaded.
At present most of the magazines are only available as image scans, which means that the text cannot be searched, indexed, or easily copied. However as time goes on the image scans will gradually be converted to Adobe Acrobat's pdf format. This will mean that the magazines can be found and indexed by the major web search engines enabling viewers to search for individual names and other words within the entire collection.
There is much more work that needs to be done in archiving these historically important magazines, and older editions will be scanned as funds become available. Donations towards this work can be made online at <www.adventisthistory.org.uk/give>.
The British Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists would like to express its gratitude to the following people for their work in making this archive available to the public: Dr Roland Karlman, former director of the Ellen G White Research Centre at Newbold College; Dr Radisa Antic, current director of the Ellen G White Research Centre at Newbold College; Mr Per Lisle, Newbold College Librarian; and Mrs Lynda Baildam, Newbold College Assistant Librarian.
GENERAL CONFERENCE SESSION BEGINS NEXT WEEK
The world Session of the Seventh-day Adventist Church will begin on Thursday 30 June and continue until Sabbath 9 July. According to a news release from the Adventist News Network, the Session will "focus not just on business items, but will also creatively look at how to answer several pressing issues for the nearly 14 million-strong movement. These issues include: high rates of members leaving church fellowship; the challenge of reaching out to secular societies; the urgent need for dedicated leaders to serve a growing church; and the absence of a strong church presence in large - and growing - cities of the world."
The General Conference Session brings together church members from around the world every five years, 2,000 of whom vote on important issues facing the Church in the coming five years. From the territory of the British Union Conference, which includes England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, there will be ten delegates - five of whom are ministers and five lay-members. BUC President Pastor Perry will also be a delegate due to his membership of the General Conference Executive Committee.
More information about the General Conference Session can be found at <www.gcsession.org>. Highlights will be shown on the Hope Channel and a complete broadcast schedule can now be downloaded in pdf format from <

TED PRAYER GUIDE. For the week commencing 26 June, as well as praying for the GENERAL CONFERENCE SESSION we are praying for PAKISTAN. The Pakistan Union has many unique and challenging situations to fulfilling the Lord's command. We live in a land where there are many Muslim fundamentalists and extremists and there are continuous threats to Christianity and the work of the church throughout the country. However, by the grace of God our Church has seen constant growth and is progressing day by day. Evangelism, teaching and preaching is still going on in the churches and schools. It is very risky to travel and witness and hold open evangelistic meetings but our pastors have been successful in their fields.
Recently, Karachi Adventist Hospital came under attack by Islamic radicals who threw stones at the hospital building, set fire to tyres on the road in front of the hospital and threw tear gas over people. Meanwhile another mob of Fundamentalists were marching toward the hospital. This group had already set fire to a large number shops and buildings. As the group progressed down the street, the Army moved in to save the hospital. This was a direct answer to our prayers and we realized that our God does care for us.
The sad incident of two church members being killed in our school and church compound in Quetta has undermined our efforts and caused disturbances to our work in that region but by the grace of God we have been able to overcome the sad situation. Please pray for:
• AWR and the Voice of Prophecy that we can continue to reach the Muslim community.
• Global Mission workers who are moving into new areas.
• Our Adventist members who have a great challenge of worshipping and keeping the Sabbath.
• That God will continue to take care of our workers and members.
• That God will keep the peace in this part of the region. [Younis Noor, President, Pakistan Union Section]
