SCOTTISH MISSION YOUTH TEAM RETURNS FROM ROMANIA
On Monday 15 August a group of 26 volunteers, from the Scottish and Irish Missions, returned to Scotland after spending two weeks working on mission projects in Romania. Led by Scottish Mission Youth Sponsor Pastor Marcel Ghioalda, himself originally from Romania, the group took on three main tasks in the town of Gataia, some 570 km west of Bucharest. The first of these was assisting in the construction of two houses to replace ones that had been destroyed by recent floods. Another group concentrated on running a Holiday Bible Club for local children, while a third took on the renovation of the local town crèche.
Although most of the volunteers came from Scotland, three joined the group from Ireland and six Romanian young people who had helped in the previous project met the group when they arrived. Accommodation was in a ward of the local psychiatric hospital where conditions were less than ideal. With just three toilets and one shower to share between the whole group queues were inevitable. However spirits remained high and the group managed the difficult task of balancing hard work with a lot of fun.
"The house-building team was exposed to lots of heavy lifting and muscle strain," reports volunteer Maroria David Oroko in a detailed and humorous account. "I was in this group and found the work physically challenging. Many a time I narrowly escaped being crushed by a beam of unprecedented weight. While at the front end of a beam that was being passed up onto the roof of a house, my friend faltered and almost took it in the face. I found it satisfying work on most occasions though."
"The crèche team had a slow start," he continues. "The lady that runs the crèche had had bad experiences with foreigners promising to do something with the crèche, but just taking pictures and leaving. We met with her on the Monday and she didn?t let us do a thing till Wednesday or Thursday. As she saw the team take on more and more jobs hungrily, she warmed and grew wide-eyed."
"The Vacation Bible School team had lots of fun with the children. They spoke English, but the Romanian children spoke none. A couple of the six Romanians started coming though (they were all bilingual) and the situation became a little easier. The course was popular with the children of the area and before long, attendance was exceeding thirty."
Two years ago Pastor Ghioalda led the first Scottish Mission youth volunteer group to Romania. Speaking last night he said, "This second trip was completely different, but it built on the same commitment from the young people that we saw last time. There really does seem to be a desire on the part of our youth to get involved in projects of this type."
For more details of the Romania trip, including a number of photographs and Maroria David Oroko's full report, visit the Scottish Mission Youth website at: <www.sdascotland.com>.
FIFTEEN YEAR OLD RAISES ONE THOUSAND POUNDS FOR ROMANIA
One of the Scottish Mission young people unable to take part in this year's mission trip to Romania was Yvonne Bauwens. At fifteen she was just under the age limit, though her older brother David was able to go. Although disappointed Yvonne decided to do everything she could to support the project and hit on the idea of combining her interest in humanitarian work with her interest in music.
Yvonne plays a number of instruments, including guitar, piano, violin, and drums, and also composes her own music. To help her brother reach his target figure of £650 for the Romania trip she decided to record a CD, playing some of her own compositions and some well-known Scottish pieces. Starting in the recording studio at her school, then moving to the Crieff church with borrowed microphones and a laptop computer, Yvonne finally recorded twelve instrumental pieces. These were professionally edited by Yvonne's uncle Dr Steve Logan, who then produced the final master.
Yvonne's ambitions for the CD, entitled "Airborne", were initially modest. Selling copies to friends and church members at £7.00 per disk she was hoping to reach a total of a hundred pounds or so. However a turning point came when she was given permission to promote the CD at her school's annual summer concert. After performing one of her piano pieces live Yvonne, with the help of her mum and dad, sold copies at a small display stand which gave information about the Romania project. £300 came in that night, but more importantly news of her enterprise began to spread.
A member of the Strathendrick Rotary Club suggested that Yvonne should write a letter to the secretary, telling him about the CD and the Romania project. A short time later she received a cheque for £50. One of her teachers circulated an email, leading to a further 20 sales. At the Scottish Mission Sports Day Yvonne had another stand and raised £35. Contacting all the members of the Crieff church resulted in another £35 sales, and so it went on. By the start of the Romania trip Yvonne had not only been able to help her brother David, she was also able to hand project leader Pastor Marcel Ghioalda a large wad of bank notes for the project fund.
In a telephone interview last night Yvonne gave the latest details of this remarkable story. An eighty-four year old local violin teacher has donated equipment to help in the CD production process, and a forthcoming article in the Strathearn Herald is likely to bring even more sales. Money is still coming in and the total that Yvonne has raised has now reached £1,114.
As for Yvonne's future, she is not yet sure what direction her life will take. She loves working with children and obviously loves her music. Having just successfully completed her GCSEs she has plenty of time to decide on her long term plans. In the short term however she hopes to sell even more CDs and will definitely not miss the next Romania trip, scheduled for 2007.
If you would like purchase Yvonne's CD you can email her at: <yvonne@gbmarineart.com>. The extra money raised will be used to help poor people in Romania with food and winter fuel and to provide additional support for the projects that the Scottish Mission volunteers have worked on.
LONDON AREA 6D HOSTS 'EXPERIENCE THE POWER' CAMPAIGN - Catherine Boldeau
?Experience the Power?, an evangelistic outreach programme hosted by Seventh-day Adventists in the West London area, was launched on Sabbath 20 August at the Hammersmith Town Hall. Area 6D is privileged to have as their speaker, Walter Pearson, who is the tele-evangelist for Breath of Life Ministries in the United States. Breath of Life Ministries is one of the families of broadcasts originating at the Adventist Media Center in North America. Its mission is to present the everlasting gospel of Jesus Christ to all people groups from a contemporary, urban perspective.
The programme is structured so as to be engaging and entertaining, but it is also designed to draw those present closer to the Lord and to invite those who have not made a firm commitment to Jesus Christ to do so. Music for the event is professionally produced by a passionate praise team, organized by Darren and Denise Wint, and ably led by Pastor Nigel David and Karen Shepherd.
One unique feature of the programme is that it is being filmed so that it can be televised later in the year. Presenters will be Pastor Richard Holder and Mrs Susan Watt.
?I believe that one of the best methods of presenting the gospel is through the media available,? said Dr Steve Thomas, pastor of the North Wembley and West Kilburn churches and co-ordinator of the event. ?In these last days, God is calling us to try new methods of reaching a dying world and I think we should not pass up these opportunities.?
If you want to ?Experience the Power?, you are cordially invited to Hammersmith Town Hall. King Street, Hammersmith, West London, tonight and each night (expect Thursday) until Sabbath 3 September. The nearest tube stations are Ravenscourt and Hammersmith. The programme begins at 7.00 pm sharp and finishes at 9.00 pm. There is chargeable parking available in the car park next to the Town Hall and free parking on the adjacent road after 6.30 pm.
LONDON YOUTH FEDERATION TEAM VISITS THAILAND - Sacha Gillin
On Monday 18 July a group of 25 people from London embarked on a mission trip to Thailand. Led by the London Youth Federation this mission trip was to be a blessing, though there were a number of problems along the way. At Gatwick airport there was confusion with the luggage allowance - 25 of us with approximately 50 pieces of luggage, you can imagine. But after much prayer, explaining the reason behind our journey and that the majority of our luggage was to give away in Thailand, and producing a letter from the Thai Mission, the staff at Gatwick waived all allowances and let us through just as we were. They didn't even tally up our weight - if they had I am sure that would have been in for a bit of a shock!
The journey was, to put it plainly, long. We stopped overnight in Abu Dhabi, where we were spoilt with a free "eat as much as you like" buffet in the hotel, for dinner and breakfast, and finally arrived in Bangkok on Tuesday 19 July. There we were met by the Thai Youth director, Pastor Chanchai, and his colleague Ps Sak Soui, who were to be our translators for our time in Bangkok. Our first night we were accommodated at the Thai mission where we had our first experience of pit toilets and showers that ran out of water. The food however was exotic and quite tasty.
The next day we travelled in two vans and a car to the village of Bouy Hoi, in the Nan Province, nine hours away from Bangkok. When we arrived late in the evening we found that the village was located near the top of a mountain. Our phones didn't work, the village had no phone, we had no contact with the outside world at all. All we had was each other.
All members of the group were accommodated in one house, seven guys in one room, luggage and changing area in another, and the eighteen ladies in a third. This was our first major challenge, living close to people that we didn't really know, but it led to close bonds being built up within the group.
Practical work involved the renovation of a church building, and once we had started we found that our accommodation, facilities, and the language barrier, were no longer major issues. We painted, we gutted, we sanded, we built fencing, we cooked on an open fire, we gave medical checks and we taught the children during the days. During the evenings we worshiped, prayed, shared experiences, and preached.
We went to teach the people in the village about civilisation but ended up being taught by them about appreciating what you have. We saw that they were happy with the little they had - sleeping on the floor was not an issue for them, eating rice everyday for breakfast, lunch and dinner, was not an issue for them, lack of creature comforts such as TV, video, washing machine, cookers, telephones to name but a few, was not an issue for them. Despite our different cultures and upbringing we bonded with them because of our love for the same God.
We officially opened the church on Sabbath 23 July and other villages were invited to witness the event. The service was so packed that people had to sit outside, but it was a blessed day and approximately twenty people were baptised in the river that afternoon.
We then visited another village. Unlike Bouy Hoi, which was mainly Buddhist, this was an Adventist village. However the local pastor said that the majority of the members no longer attended and he wanted us to conduct a revival meeting. Again God prevented language being a barrier, and through the singing, actions, and preaching, many of them publicly rededicated their lives to the Lord.
In the next village we got much the same response. It felt like a revival road show, witnessing in a way we had never before done in London, touching the hearts of people who didn't even speak our language.
There is much more to be shared in regards to this adventure but the one thing I would like to leave you with is the fact that when you do the work of the Lord he will reveal himself to you in ways that you wouldn't even consider. God showed himself to us even when we got things wrong. He complemented our weaknesses, smoothed over our failures, and used us as instruments to do the work that He sent us to Thailand to do. We have come back changed and stronger in our faith.

TED PRAYER GUIDE. For the week commencing 28 August our prayer theme is LAY EVANGELISM. When I was young, I sometimes daydreamed of becoming a hero! I would sit at the front of the bus, just in case the driver suddenly was taken ill and I would be called upon to bring the bus to a stop, or better still, drive the bus on the rest of its journey!
Now I find that I am surrounded by heroes and heroines, and all of us can join them. These are ordinary people, who have as busy ? or busier ? lives than ours, yet have pledged that they will always look for opportunities to share the Good News that we have been given.
This week, when the World Church's emphasis is on Lay Evangelism, I think it would be good for us to consider the heroes of today, and invite you to join their ranks. Simply by carrying a few leaflets, by smiling, by making friends as we travel, we can join the ranks of the heroes who evangelise. Please pray for:
? Jesus' love to be seen in me. ? The courage to tell others about God's goodness. ? All who share their faith in very difficult circumstances. [Paul Clee, Personal Ministries Director, Trans-European Division]

SMALL ADS
ADVENTIST RUN CARE HOME. A purpose built residential care home in Bury, Lancashire, is almost ready for occupancy. The owners are Seventh-day Adventists and say that Church members will get a warm welcome. They also point out that unless members are "very rich" they will usually get Local Authority funding, even if they travel to another area. Further information on funding can be obtained from your local Social Services department. For more information on the care home phone Stan Hensman on: 0161 723 5756. Email: <hollybankdualreg@btconnect.com>.
CALLING ADVENTIST SCIENTISTS. The number of science students at British universities is decreasing, while the number of scientists in the Adventist Church in Britain is on the increase. Perhaps an organisation of Adventist scientists could support some of the evangelistic thrusts here in the UK and help to provide relevant literature for our young people, as well as providing a voice and encouragement for potential scientists. If you are interested in such an idea please contact Dr Albert Waite at: <mandra0714@aol.com>.
STANBOROUGH PRIMARY SCHOOL VACANCY. We have a full-time vacancy for a Year 6 teacher for a one year contract to begin as soon as possible in the Autumn Term. If you have Key Stage 2 experience and would like to prepare a class of seventeen eager learners for their Key Stage 2 SATS in this pleasant independent Christian school please send your C.V. to: The Headteacher, Stanborough Primary School, Appletree Walk, Garston, Watford, WD25 0DQ.
