JOHN LOUGHBOROUGH SCHOOL ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS BEGIN

Yesterday afternoon, 15 September, a special reception marking the twenty-fifth anniversary of the John Loughborough School was held in the House of Commons Pavilion. The event was hosted by Diane Abbott, Labour MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington, and organised by former John Loughborough student Anthony Roberts.

More than one hundred guests and dignitaries were present as Ms Abbott began proceedings by asking BUC Education director Dr Keith Davidson to open with prayer. She then commented on the general state of education in the United Kingdom and the relatively poor performance of black students, particularly boys, as they get older. However, she went on to say that the John Loughborough School set different standards and had given black boys the belief that they can do well. "John Loughborough has given us a way of looking at our children in a way that values and respects them," she said.

Ms Abbott praised the many practical steps that the John Loughborough School had taken in order to change the pattern of black education and highlighted its standards, targets and monitoring. However the key point for her was belief - belief in the children by the parents, and belief in themselves by the children. "The educational community has a lot to thank the Seventh-day Adventist Church for," she said.

Responding to Ms Abbott's address, Pastor Orville Woolford, the first headmaster of John Loughborough School, acknowledged the help of many individuals in the success of the school. "As a Church we know the worth of people," he said. "Human beings are created by God in His own image." One of these key people, Pastor Woolford said, was Dr Keith Davidson, now Education director of the BUC, who, during his eleven years at John Loughborough School pursued the issue of the school's finances "like a Rottweiler!"

Pastor Woolford also praised the contribution made by the South England Conference Administration, particularly Pastor Ken Gammon, who was President at the time. "The Administration of the Seventh-day Adventist Church had faith in us as educators and supported us one hundred percent," he said.

Dr Davidson described his time at John Loughborough School as a challenge and a struggle. His headship began in 1987, a time when small Church groups were not considered for state funding. However after much lobbying and with support from MPs Bernie Grant and Stephen Byers, Grant Maintained Status was finally secured for the school in 1998. "For us now," Dr Davidson said, "the challenge is to allow John Loughborough to continue to be a leader." Pointing out the relatively poor performance of black students in most schools across London he said, "John Loughborough provides the best deal for our children ... but we need a belief that all our children can succeed. John Loughborough should be an inspiration for other black children in our community."

Other speakers at the event included the current headteacher Dr June Alexis who, while admitting that there were still challenges, condemned those who were negative about the school. "The media are saying to our children over and over again that they are at the bottom of the pile ... but don't be negative, come and help."

BUC President Pastor Cecil Perry praised the achievements of the school over the last twenty-five years, and SEC President Pastor Humphrey Walters spoke to the students, past and present, saying, "John Loughborough School gave you the light and launched you on your way, but the brightest days of the school are yet ahead."

There will be a special John Loughborough Anniversary Day of Fellowship this Sabbath at St Stephens Church, Enfield, and further celebrations will be held at the banqueting suite of Lords Cricket Ground this Sunday. Attendance to the latter is by ticket only.

SEC YOUTH LEADERSHIP CONVENTION IN SPAIN - Beth Holford

Imagine the zest of a seven-day trip to Spain. Add a generous helping of imported specialist speakers, and a sprinkling of lake-water, and you have the recipe for the South England Conference's Youth Leadership Convention. 'Raizes '05' took place at the Adventist campsite near Madrid, from Sunday 4 to Sunday 11 September.

On arriving at Entrepenas, we found that Japhet's staff had been there for nearly a week, setting up equipment and finishing the preparations on location. That night, a lively worship session was led by Kwaku, and supported by a band gleaned from all over the SEC. Then, we were introduced to our worship speaker, Pastor Esther Knott, who works at Andrews University. She spoke on aspects of leadership and life, including self-worth. Many people were touched and changed by the messages she presented, and the time she spent individually with each attendee. One of the greatest things about 'Raizes '05' was the way that everyone, from the best speaker down to the most junior youth member, had time to socialise together, and to "network and share ideas and concerns with other youth workers," said Carolyn Schulz.

Another memorable speaker was the prominent leadership consultant Pastor Fredrick Russell, who gave a six-hour seminar on leadership skills. His dynamic personality and creative presentation style challenged us all to be better leaders.

While Pastor Russell's seminars were for all trainees, there were five levels of seminars available. On offer was Level 1 in either Pathfinder or Youth Leadership (equipping people to be involved in youth work), Level 2 in the same (training actual leaders), or Advanced level training (for those wishing to sit on the SEC Youth Advisory). NAD Youth Ministry Leader and YLC Speaker Pastor Ron Whitehead commented on how good it was "to see that there is powerful, quality, Bible based youth ministry training taking place in the SEC."

I'd say that the best experience for me was the two-hour-long afterglow on Thursday evening, which was preparing the way for a Communion service the following night. During this informal worship time, we were led through moods of celebration, adoration, and contemplation as we praised God through songs, prayers, and testimonies. The Spirit of fellowship seemed to settle that night, and remained for the Communion service, in which we burned papers that held scribblings of sins we wanted to give God. For the wine, Esther gave us all tiny cups made of olive-wood from the Middle East, to remind us of the reconciliation process of the Cross. The added symbolism of this made the already poignant service tremendously powerful.

I think that anyone who attended would agree with Pastor Eddie Hyppolite when he said "I believe that in the years ahead, many youth leaders in the SEC will look back on this year's YLC as the pivotal year in the transformation of youth work in this Conference and their personal lives." I would recommend the Youth Leadership training event to anyone at all interested in youth work. It is a great place to test the waters and be empowered, and to meet those who are passionate about saving young people. If you want more information about 'Raizes '05', check out the SEC Youth website, or call the SEC Youth Department on 01923 656500. A video/DVD is being produced of the week and will be available on completion.

GOD USES NEWBOLD STUDENTS FOR AFRICAN EVANGELISM - Sujoya Paul-Bullock

Newbold's mark on the world was pronounced when in June and July three hundred people in Kenya came to know Jesus through the efforts of former and present Newbold students - Pastor Mahende and Fenades and a team of fifteen speakers. Africa was on the heart of the seventeen strong group who conducted the evangelistic meetings. Six of the team members were from the UK and they paid for their own tickets to travel to Africa for the events.

This commitment was equalled by that of the local people, who were willing to walk more than ten miles every day to attend the meetings. The meetings were held outdoors and in spite of heavy rains, the people sat patiently and listened attentively to God's messages. Three hundred other individuals experienced the life changing, life transforming power of Jesus Christ's love and forgiveness.

The committed team of seventeen pastors and volunteers also succeeded to build a new church from scratch during their time there. All the finances were contributed by UK Adventists who have a special burden for ministry in Africa (the UKAAF). They also put in place a practical way of following-up the many newly baptised members. This was through setting up a Sabbath School in a widowed church member's house who was willing to contribute a piece of land where the new Christians would be nurtured during the next six months.

The people have decided to follow Jesus; the local members have the space and place to nurture them and fellowship with them; but Bibles are still in short supply. Two hundred and eighty Bibles are being called for, so that each new member can read the life giving truths for themselves and continue to grow into mature Christians who can some day hold evangelistic meetings of their own. For information on where to send your surplus Bibles, email <fenades@yahoo.com> or phone: 07915 669255 or 07765 948176.

FLOWER FESTIVAL RATED AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS - Audrey Balderstone

A sensory garden, complete with fountain and birdsong in the North Porch, and a waterfall and stream at the front of the church, were two of the most popular displays at the Stanborough Park Church Flower Festival during the weekend of 9 - 11 September. Children loved the buzzing bees in the harvest display, the 'guide dog' for the blind, and the Dr Barnardo's house, while adults gazed at the moving tribute to those killed in terrorist outrages. 'Fishers of Men' appealed to lovers of the sea, while the exotic colours and smells of India were conjured up by flowers and spices. Unusual heliconiums and proteas were incorporated into the design depicting the work of David Livingstone in Africa; musical notes were sounded for Charles Wesley, and flowers tumbling from a dustbin spoke tellingly of the work of our soup run.

A giant 'rainbow of promise' welcomed visitors to the church where, in four sections, they learned how we are Linked by Love: Filled with Hope. The first section dealt with God as our Creator and how He has provided for our physical needs. The second concentrated on Jesus as our link between Heaven and Earth. The next depicted pioneers who responded to God's love by preaching the Gospel and serving humanity, while the final section was devoted to the hope and confidence we have in Christ's return.

This 'Blessed Hope' was the theme of the joyful Sabbath sermon preached by Pastor Paul Clee to a packed church. Trumpets, musical instruments, moving vocals and the spoken word all conspired to make this a memorable service, following on from an excellent presentation by the Family Life department the previous evening. On Saturday evening the church was filled to overflowing for a concert, organised by Roland Guenin, which rivalled anything the Proms had to offer. In her moving appeal, Alison Burgess used the story of the starfish to good effect, resulting in a collection of £1,700.00. Sister Frances Dominica, founder of Helen and Douglas Houses, responded by saying how impressed she was by everything she had seen and heard and she thanked the congregation from the bottom of her heart.

Forty-two displays were interpreted by arrangers from Stanborough Park church, members of Flower Arranging Societies and arrangers from other churches. Their work drew people from far and near to the Preview evening and to the church for the viewing days. However, Flower Festivals are much more than flowers artistically displayed - they are instead an opportunity to share the Gospel in a unique way. Visitors ask questions, are offered literature and have the opportunity to speak about things which trouble them or have moved them. The funds collected for charity make a real difference and we are hoping to be able to reach our goal of £10,000 so that we can offer 100 days of respite or loving end of life care to teenagers and young adults who have life-limiting illnesses.

Videos and DVDs of the Flower Festival, and videos and DVDs of the Musical Concert are available priced at £5.00 each plus £1.00 p&p - with profits going to the fund. If you would like to purchase one please send a cheque made payable to 'Stanborough Park Church Flower Festival' to: Flower Festival Visuals, Stanborough Park SDA Church, 609 St Albans Road, Watford WD25 9JL. Please state clearly if you wish to have a video/DVD of the Flowers OR of the musical concert and include your phone number. Thank you.

[Editor's note: We have just received news that the goal of £10,000 has now been reached.]

BALLINASLOE CHURCH GROUP FEATURED IN IRISH NEWSPAPER

On Friday 9 September an article and photograph in the Connacht Tribune focused on the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Ireland. In particular the article, by Carmella Maffeo, highlighted the multi-cultural nature of the group in Ballinasloe, pointing out that most of the members are Brazillian. It also described how, at a recent meeting in a local hotel, 90 Adventists from 20 different countries got together for a small groups seminar with BUC Personal Ministries director Pastor David Cox.

The inclusion of the article in the paper was largely down to the efforts of Mr Oliver Martyn, communication secretary for the Galway church, who attracted the interest of the editor by broadening the subject to include the growing cultural and ethnic diversity of Ireland. "Meetings like this are an example of Ireland's growing multicultural landscape," he said. "It shows there is a greater variety of people living in Ireland."

With a circulation of over 28,000, the Connacht Tribune is the highest-selling regional newspaper in the Republic of Ireland.

BUC EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE ACTIONS

Following the BUC Executive Committee yesterday, 15 September, a service request has been sent through to the NEC for Mr Malcolm Hayles to take over the management of the Roundelwood Health Spa. Pastor Martin Bell has been asked to manage the Church's property portfolio, including the Dell, Lingmore, and Coniston House. As the ADRA-UK search committee has not yet found a permanent replacement for Mr Raafat Kamal, who is now serving at the Trans-European Division, Mr Mark Castellino, currently serving as ADRA-UK Programmes director, has been asked to take over on a pro-tem basis.

APOLOGIES FOR MISSING NEWSLETTERS

Last Friday we received a large number of "undeliverable mail" messages after sending out BUC News. We believe that for some reason it was blocked by the increasingly zealous anti-spam programmes used by certain Internet Service Providers. We are hoping that this week's mailing will be more successful but are powerless to stop this kind of blocking.

TED PRAYER GUIDE. For the week commencing 18 September we are praying for HUNGARY. Hungary is still a secular country. While having an increased interest toward religious experiences its people have a decreasing affinity to any religious organization. Our mission is to plant new churches which are able to meet these special needs of the people. We have decided to start 20 new church plants over a period of five years with most of them in territories where there is no Adventist presence.

We have challenges with our existing 113 churches. In the last five years the membership in 57% of our churches has decreased. Our challenge is to revitalize these churches, to sustain unity and mission focus among the members, to create an open and supportive atmosphere for newcomers. Our mission statement is: Walking with Christ and waiting by working. Please pray:

? For our 20 new church plants.
? That we can train and equip the majority of our church members to carry out in a new, up-to-date way the gospel commission.
? For the revitalization of the dying churches. [Erno Ösz-Farkas, Secretary, Hungarian Union]
