"Woe to you, O Moab! You are destroyed, O people of Chemosh! He has given up hsi sons as fugitives and his daughters as captives to Sihon king of the Amorites." Num.21:29

Chemosh- destroyer, subduer, or fishgod- was the national god of the Moabites.

In our text verse and in Jeremiah 48:46, they are called, "the people of Chemosh. He was also worshiped by the Ammonites (Judges 11:24).

The worship of this god, the "abomination of Moab," and the worship of Molech, was introduced at Jerusalem by Solomon (1 Ki.11:7) but was abolished by Josiah (2 Ki.23:13)

There is nothing definite known about this god, or the style of his worship. There is, however, an old Jewish tradition that says his worshipers went bareheaded and refused to wear garments that were made using a needle.

Chemosh is also mentioned in Jeremiah 48:7,13,46.
