In a poor home in Palestine, the evening meal depended heavily on the family's garden.
Vegetable stew, seasoned with herbs from the yard, was served in a common pot.
Everybody dipped in with a sop, which was a piece of bread used to scoop out a mouthful.
The family gathered close around, sitting picnic style on a mat on the floor. If there was company for dinner, Mom usually managed to find some meat to add to the pot.
Some condiments were offered to help liven the meal, like olives, pickled onions or toasted pumpkin seeds.
