GOOD ATTENDANCE AT LIFE DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCES - Alan Hodges

Altogether six hundred members attended one-day LIFEdevelopment conferences at the Bristol Central church and Wolverhampton Oxford Street church on Sabbaths 7 and 14 January respectively. The conferences were held in response to the gathering momentum of LIFEdevelopment in the British Union. The excellent attendance indicates that members are beginning to see the potential of this exciting concept, which is Biblically based and follows the example of Jesus.

Speakers at the events were Miroslav Pujic, LIFEdevelopment director at the Trans-European Division, and Alan Hodges, LIFEdevelopment director at the British Union. The programme covered a number of areas, including: the problems we are facing as a Church in reaching people in our post-modern world, the importance of relationships, the concept of LIFEdevelopment, the strategy of focussing on the discipleship path, and the implementation of the concept through LIFEdevelopment Groups and LIFEdevelopment Centres.

"Many post-modern people in our society are spiritual seekers," said Pastor Pujic, "and the LIFEdevelopment concept is the response to their search... We need to develop relationships, but how can we do this effectively if we do not first have a genuine relationship with God?"

Members took advantage of the events to acquire copies of the LIFE.info magazine, as well as the videos and DVDs resources that are now available. Special prayers were said for those who are committed to planting a church in South Bristol, for the forty groups that will be formed to fast and pray in the Wolverhampton area, and for those who have committed themselves to be leaders and members of LIFEdevelopment groups.

Further one-day conferences will be held in Hampstead, Leeds and Croydon. For further information on LIFEdevelopment email: <ask@lifedevelopment.info>, phone: 01923 672251, or write to: LIFEdevelopment Office, Stanborough Park, Watford, Herts, WD25 9JZ.

NEWBOLD BUSINESS STUDIES - THE WAY FORWARD - Sujoya Bullock

"Would you like to experience a placement with ADRA, a marketing company or another business in the competitive world market? Could you see yourself jetting off to Sudan for a three-month internship, overseeing and supporting a relief project? Your CV will catch an employer's eye; your hard study will have the support of practical experience and the world is your oyster! How can we develop programmes at Newbold College that will support such objectives?"

This is what Newbold's Department of Business Studies brought to the table at the beginning of the New Year. The Way Forward meeting, held on Sunday 15 January, hosted a business focus group consisting of academics and practical business people, including many Newbold alumni. Dr David Penner, College Principal, and the entire senior management team were present. As one of the participants, Michael Parker from King's College Hospital, put it, "There was a natural mix of education, business and members of the Seventh-day Adventist movement which was fertile ground for new ways of thinking and working for Newbold College."

According to Marinko Markek, Head of the Department of Business Studies, "The meeting is the beginning of a redefining of the Department's mission."

Four focus groups tackled issues of how the department can serve in a better way the needs of both the Church and Adventist young people. The role of Christian business ethics vis-à-vis secular business 'morals' in education was also debated. "The two are not always mutually exclusive," Dr Ghalib Fahad, a Senior Lecturer at Middlesex Business School, promisingly stated.

"One of the core strengths of Newbold is that it is a part of a global network of Adventist institutions of learning, so a student here really has a qualification of international reputation," said Stephen Pilgrim, an Adventist Senior Lecturer in Marketing and Consultant at Middlesex University Business School (MUBS) and a member of the Newbold College Board. "I like the possibility of there being an Adventist University of Europe with Newbold being a part of it."

"There has been a lot of very creative thinking; people are not afraid to ask tough questions," said Bert Smit, Executive Director of ADRA-UK. "I am looking forward to getting to the core to find answers for young people to find employment within and outside the Church other than in theology."

It is hoped that the meeting will be a first step in developing and fostering links between the department and the Adventist business community in the UK and the Trans-European Division. The department would like to encourage all Adventist businessmen and women who read this article and are willing to support business studies at Newbold to contact Marinko at: <mmarkek@newbold.ac.uk> or on: 01344 407493.

Finally, it has to be stressed that all participants gave their talents, skills, experience and time voluntarily. Newbold College would like to take this opportunity to express its deep appreciation for the impressive support demonstrated in and after the meeting.

ADVENTIST FOOTBALL LEAGUE BEGINS A NEW YEAR - Trevor and Andrene Young

Established in the year 2003, the Adventist Football League is now well into its fourth season and things are looking good. As one would expect from a new organisation, we had our baptism of fire, struggled with discipline and organisational efficiency, but through our collective efforts and the abiding grace of God, we have weathered the early storms and are now poised for great things.

As we start the new year, the League wishes to thank all its well-wishers and supporters for their prayers, hard work, dedication, participation and general support that enabled us to progress this far. We hope that with God's continued guidance and blessings, and your continued support, we will make greater strides towards achieving our stated aims. These are as follows:

* To enhance inter-church communication and interaction.
* To improve fellowship, establish and develop new friendships between church members.
* To equip the youth of the Church with sporting skills, while assisting with their social and spiritual development.
* To encourage and facilitate greater interaction between the Church and the community, effectively bridging the Church/community gap, and thereby developing a more balanced community.
* To develop more effective role models by setting good standards, both on and off the football field by adhering to true Christian morals and principles.
* To draw people closer to Christ by demonstrating genuine Christian values and morals in all our endeavours.

The League has secured a partnership with the Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS), which is currently focused on the set-up, management and administration of a new competition within the League called the JN Cup. We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship with the JNBS and hope our relationship with them will bring other benefits to the league.

We also hope to host a benefit event in April 2006 for the purpose of raising funds. We are asking all our friends, partners, supporters etc. to gather all the talent you can for this event. Please coordinate your efforts with Newton Reid and Ryan Hastings.

NEW MANUALS FROM THE GC CHILDREN'S MINISTRIES DEPARTMENT

The Children's Ministries department is just ten years old but due to its rapid growth the material in the Church Manual has had to be updated and expanded. This work has recently been completed and a brand new manual is now available for Pastors, Elders, and Children's Ministries coordinators.

Here in the UK and Ireland it is being distributed to each church, either to the Children's Ministries leader or Sabbath School Superintendent, or through the Ministerial Association to each pastor.

BUC Children's Ministries director Heather Haworth says, "The material is excellent. However my main concern is that the person in office this year will remember that it is not theirs to keep but will pass it on to their successor!"

DALBERT ELIAS FEATURED IN THIS WEEK'S "IN CONVERSATION"

Pastor Dalbert Elias has been the guest interviewee in the BUC's "In Conversation" television programme this week. The programme is broadcast several times during the week on Hope Channel Europe, and can also be watched on Hope Channel and Hope Channel International, though these are only available on the Internet here in Europe.

The best time for Church members to watch "In Conversation" on Hope Channel Europe is probably Sabbath afternoons at 3:00 pm or Monday evenings at 8:00 pm. For a schedule of broadcast times and more information about "In Conversation" see the Adventist Media Centre (UK) website at: <www.adventistmedia.org.uk/inconversation.php>.

BOOK REVIEW: "THE FRENCH PILOT" BY ALLEN STEELE - reviewed by Julene Duerksen-Kapao

Flicking through an old legal register now filled with recipes, newspaper clippings and a few diary entries, Allen Steele stumbled across more than he was hoping for. He knew his family's oral history, but Steele was excited to find documents linked to his heritage. The book belonged to his grandmother, had been given to his mother, and then handed down to him before she died.

Immersed in the history of his family, the Lamoureauxs, Dr Steele began an investigation that would take him around the world following the footsteps, the tides and the stories of his famous ancestor, André Lamoureaux.

André was a Huguenot, among the French Protestants who followed the teachings of John Calvin and were forced to flee France in the 16th and 17th centuries to escape continuing persecution. The French Pilot is a riveting retelling of André's life from a young boy through the trials and events that would make him a hero in his family line, respected by his family and friends, and a dedicated man of God. Beginning in the late 1600s, Steele traces André as a child in a French village, Lusignan, to a coastal shipping town, Meschers, to Bristol, England, and finally to New York.

André's mother was a devout Catholic, his father a Protestant. He was unaware of the precarious line his father walked until the local Catholic priest overlooked André as an altar boy and treated his father different than he did the other fathers. As he grew older, André began to search for something different. It wasn't until a cousin introduced him to a hidden "chapel," a place where Protestants met in a clearing in the woods, hearing truth and praising God, that André gave his heart to the Lord and his life to service.

Steele takes the reader on an absorbing journey as we walk with André through his search for peace and a safe place to worship. Coincidence and his namesake, Uncle André, took the younger André to Meschers. It was here André learned to be a shipping pilot, met his wife, Suzanne, and undertook daring acts to help Protestants flee the country: "And so it was decided. They would start an underground ferry to freedom for the distressed, under cover of darkness, just as their uncle had done before them. The pick-up point would be at Suzac Beach just north of Meschers. A dinghy would take people from the beach out to the ships in the estuary. It would be André's job to find sympathetic ship captains who would be willing to take the unfortunates on board" (page 83).

This wasn't the last time the Lamoureauxs would be involved in underground activities. Suzanne helped a local prison in Bristol, bringing food and water to the French prisoners; she also helped poor girls who had nowhere to go by providing them with a bed and food for a short time before André could get them to a new life; and finally once settled in New York, Suzanne became part of the slave underground railway, providing shelter and safety for two Negroes at a time as they headed north to freedom.

The French Pilot is a thrilling history lesson. Putting real faces and lives to the Dissenters, Steele opens readers' eyes, minds and hearts to what life would have been like for Protestants living under the unbending law of Catholic rulers. The Lamoureauxs encounter numerous faith-testing experiences - the loss of several children, two at birth, one at the tender age of three, the burning of their chapel, and the brutality of the King's soldiers - each drawing the family closer together and closer to God.

André's adept navigation skills made him a reliable sea pilot, but it also brought him a myriad of challenges including capture by pirates and a short time in jail. Although there were many frustrations and trials along the way, the Lamoureauxs continually trusted in the Lord's guiding. Steele pens a fantastic summary of a beautiful life. Easy to read, interesting and thrilling to the heart, The French Pilot will challenge your own beliefs and keep you asking, "What would I have done?"

MAP REFERENCES WANTED FOR BUC CHURCHES

The South England Conference has taken the initiative in a project to obtain the precise latitude and longitude for every Adventist church in the UK and Ireland. Already they have compiled details for around half of our 300 or so churches and this information has been entered into the main church database.

The purpose of this project is to provide more accurate mapping of church locations than is currently available using Post Codes alone, so that potential visitors using the web or satellite navigation equipment can find their way to the churches more easily.

The new information is being put to good use already in the churches directory on the BUC website at: <www.adventistchurches.org.uk> where visitors to the site will see links to the MultiMap site where we have latitude and longitude information for the church.

We would be grateful for the assistance of members in this project. If a particular church does not have a MultiMap link on the website and you can obtain the precise latitude and longitude for it, please send the coordinates and the name of the church to: <info@adventist.org.uk>.
