This was a very ancient method of punishment practised among different nations.

In Greece, according to Delphian law, those who were guilty of sacrilege received this punishment.

The Romans also used this method for several offenses.

Among the Turks and the Persians a similar method of capital punishment was adopted.

One commentator has suggested that the way of Jezebel's death is an illustration of this custom (2 Ki.9:23)
