Ancient scribes liked to be thorough in their work. Mistakes in their copying were disasterous.

In a world without Spell-check, the men had to be meticulous at their job.

In their quest for perfect scrolls, the scribes earned the title, "the counters", because they actually counted every letter of every book of the Scriptures to ensure that they hadn't left anything out.

As a way of double-checking, they would figure out which letter appeared in the middle of each book.

Their great pains in preserving the original wording of the Scriptures is the reason the Old Testament has been handed down intact to us today.
