Answer: The archangel Michael's identity has been debated through the centuries. Both Ellen White and many non-Adventist Bible scholars equate Michael with Christ. This view does not require any lessening of Christ's full deity.
Resources: The Biblical evidence and the views of commentators are summarized in Questions on Doctrine, pp. 71-86. See also many contemporary evangelical Bible commentaries on such passages as Revelation 12.
It may interest you to know that Jehovah's Witnesses also equate Michael the archangel with Jesus Christ. However, unlike SDAs, Jehovah's Witnesses do use this teaching to lessen Christ's full deity. SDAs do not believe Jesus is a created angel but rather that He is the chief, or head, of the angels, which is what "arche" actually means. For instance, the name Archelaus (Matt. 2:22) means chief, or leader, of the people. Notice that Revelation 22: 16 says the angel belongs to Jesus. It is important also to remember that the word translated as "angel" also simply means "messenger." So, Jesus is both the head of the angels of God and the head, or chief agent, of God's creation (Rev. 3:14; cf. Acts 3:15; Hebrews 1:3,10; Psalms 102: 1, 12, 25; John 1:10).
Some may wonder about the historical and theological connection between SDAs and Jehovah's Witnesses. Their leader, Charles Taze Russell, studied books written by George Storrs, a prominent preacher in the Millerite movement. One book he studied was on the Bible teaching about the state of mankind in death. Up through the 1920s, the Jehovah's Witnesses also shared the view with SDAs that the 1,260 days were literal years. Almost no Jehovah's Witness is aware of this today.
