Pakistan: Pakistani President Awards ADRA with Service Medal

Acknowledging the efforts of Seventh-day Adventist-run Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) during the South Asia earthquake of 2005, Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf presented the Sitara-I-Eisaar ("Star of Sacrifice") to the agency during a ceremony held at the Pakistan Embassy in Washington, D.C., on September 21. ADRA International president, Charles Sandefur, who accepted the award, said, "It [is] truly an honor to be recognized in such a way by the nation of Pakistan." He also noted ADRA's pleasure in accepting the medal on behalf of the many donors who contributed to the agency's immediate response when an earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale struck Southern Asia on October 8, 2005. Affecting more than four million people, the quake was the biggest natural disaster in Pakistan's history. Other organizations receiving the award included World Vision International, Catholic Relief Services, and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). [ADRA/ANN Staff]
